Got too riled up again last night about the fact that h2g2 is nowhere near as popular as its pop culture prevalence suggests it should be. Honestly I'd put it up there with Star Trek and Star Wars in terms of scifi pop culture giants from the 60s-90s. I'd say that in nerdy and geeky settings you hear "don't panic" about as frequently as you hear "live long and prosper" or "may the force be with you", if not more often. I've never encountered a webpage with a 404 that references Star Trek or Star Wars, but I've come across multiple that said just "so long and thanks for all the fish". This here tag should be getting at least three times as many posts on a slow day, by my humble estimates. I feel like I'm living in the fucking Fermi Paradox of scifi lit because where is everybody!!!

And I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out why that is. Like, are we currently just late? Is h2g2 a fandom that belongs to people my dad's age and I'm inheriting the scraps? I can't even find anything on h2g2's direct impact on pop culture either. Star Wars was super popular and Star Trek basically started modern fandom as we know it. Is h2g2 just too niche? Is it because it's a book series instead of tv and movies? Did h2g2 simply not permeate the culture deep enough and now everyone is pretending to know it because it's always been there?

Why is it like this!!! How did we get here!!! Where is everyone!!!

Me when I ruin the hang out by mentioning that King Baldwin IV’s mask in kingdom of heaven is extremely historically inaccurate for the eighteenth time that day (¬‿¬)

1. Yes it is mentioned his face was kind of chopped later on and made some people uncomfortable

2. HOWEVER there are no records of him actually wearing a mask (of the kind depicted in film)

3. Yes I’m like 90% sure it’s mentioned somewhere he occasionally later covered his face with a veil or hood BUT that’d wouldn’t have been uncommon back then (cause of climate I think)

4. ALSO not positive on this but I pretty sure Baldwin didn’t develop facial or many physical indications of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) until a bit later in his (short) life. As the main afflictions he suffered from were initially muscular and stuff.

5. While it would serve the purpose of covering his face, a mask especially one depicted in the movie would be SO fucking painful to wear over facial sores / skin lesions. I’ve worn tights and socks over my grotty open eczema before, would not recommend, so I feel like a mask would just be painful and not helpful at all lowkey
