Völur and viking women
People may think that the vikings were all about men and virility, but women played a big, if not bigger part than them in their society. For example, the Völur (singular=Völva), who were very important women. They were witches who always traveled with wands as big as walking sticks, which were burried with them at the time of their death. The name Völva literally means âwand-wedâ. They were unmarried wise women and priestesses, that served as healers and diviners, and were held in great esteem. In fact, they were so valued that they could travel alone with no fear, and be welcome to any village or hearth they passed by. A clanâs chief would always let a Völva sit at the end of the table, showing that she was a higher authority than them. Of course, the Völur werenât the only important females in viking society. There was also the BlĂłtgydiur (sacrificial priestesses), and the HĂłvgydiur (temple priestesses), who were devotees of the god Freyr, and were considered his wives.Â
Village women were also very valued, and were in charge of the household money because they were believed to be magic and have the hability to see in the future. When a viking man mistreated his lady, she was allowed to cut off his genitals and hang them in her home. If a woman divorced her husband, HE would be the one shamed for being divorced, because he didnât treat his wife right. Men werenât even allowed to touch a womanâs hand if she hadnât agreed to it or he would be punished by law. Viking women were strong and always ready for battle. In fact, a recent archeological discovery has proved that half the viking warriors were female. The remains found in burial sites were first misidentified and thought to be male skeletons, just because they were buried with swords and shields. But studying osteological signs of gender within the bones, reaserchers discovered that aproximately half the skeletons belonged to women, who were given a proper burial with their weapons.Â
With that being said, let there be no more of misogyny in the norse pagan community.
For those that need a reminder
YOU CAN'T BE HOMOPHOBIC AND BE NORSE PAGAN
YOU CAN'T BE TRANSPHOBIC AND BE NORSE PAGAN
YOU CAN'T BE RACIST AND BE NORSE PAGAN
YOU CAN'T BE BIGOTED AND BE NORSE PAGAN
However, if you die fighting a Nazi, you'll definitely go to Valhalla.

Cottage Discourse
Hello fellow witches.
I have a question. I am a hearth, kitchen and cottage witch, but I donât want to support the racist ideologies of cottagecore.
I know, as a practitioner, that by cottage I just mean a place I live. I personally live in an apron the second floor but I am looking to one day move into a cabin in our local mountains.
Should I change my name and the name of my craft? I donât want to express any ideologies in common with racists, nazis, people who are âfolkishâ etc.
I am thinking it could be called âHome Craftâ but then thatâs sounds like crafting decor for the home.
Here are some synonyms or words that might work instead of âcottageâ - home, house, bower, cabin, dwelling, refuge, hearth and home (used together), sanctuary, shelter, den, nest (for us corvidvore ppl!), or haven!
Would anyone else like to chime in on this?
@madamehearthwitch @hearthandhomewitchery or anyone else who identifies as a cottage witch?
Thanks! Ps - I think I like Haven and Hearth craft! They sound good together!
Honestly, I think itâs less about the name and more about actively decrying that kind of rhetoric when it crops up. Unfortunately racists, facists, etc like to latch onto things that are popular and try to recruit that way. It also doesnât help that have a history of promoting a romanticized version of a âpureâ rural life. And itâs not just cottagecore, but the larger witch and pagan community. Â
If you pick another name for it, they just adopt that name. The word cottagecore (as opposed to something like hearth, country or rustic) came out of the lgqtb community and I rather not surrender it.
Honestly, its more about action. Call them out and donât let them thrive in cottagecore. Support diversity, support BIPOC and privilege their voices.
They've already taken norse-pagan symbolism, I support the fight to keep cottagecore with us.

Intuition is real. Vibes are real. Energy doesnât lie. Tune in.
This is actually called thin slicing. Your brain recognizes patterns from very small âslicesâ of information by comparing them to things you have experienced before. This all happens very quickly on a subconscious level without our conscious mind being involved. So intuition is actually really fast pattern recognition, and it can be very accurate. So yeah, if you have a gut feeling that a person or situation is not good, get the hell out. Your brain knows whatâs up.Â
When I was young - because Iâve always been a big skeptical pain in the ass - I thought that when people were talking about interpersonal âenergy,â they were on some Gay Ass Shit.
Years later, after spending hundreds of hours reading studies about intuition and neuroscience and pattern recognition and the processing power of the subconscious mind, I realized that that kind of talk - âshe has such good energy,â âyou need to read the energy of the room,â âI just got some really bad energy off of that guyâ - is a convenient shorthand for the lightning-fast, weirdly-accurate, real-as-fuck subconscious processing of the probability of positive or negative social outcomes likely to result from hundreds or thousands of variables. That âenergyâ isnât a tangible thing floating around in the air. Itâs your brain updating you constantly with information about your situation. Listen to it. Especially if itâs telling you to be nervous or scared. Your brain is very good at recognizing danger. Let the enormous processing power of your subconscious mind protect you. Itâs better at spotting patterns than you are.Â
âBad energyâ isnât some hippie shit. Itâs your brain setting off a claxon because it knows somethingâs not right.
Thin slicing is wonderfully helpful, but be aware that if itâs doing its pattern recognition from bad sources, you need to actively override it. Weâre raised in a racist society, inundated with racist media, and bombarded with subtly (or unsubtly) racist advice. Thin slicing can save your life, but itâs also the cause behind the unconscious elements of racism (and misogyny/ableism/antisemitism/islamophobia/etc.) that we all suffer from
Trust your instincts, but if your instincts tell you something that seems prejudicial, double check their work.

I live in East Tennessee as well, and was curious about where you learn your Appalachian magic from.
A lot of it is here and there from witches all around me, though they are few and far between, but most of it is self research. I don't get to practice as much as I would like.
