TLDR: You can export of all of the content you’ve created for your blog, and package it up into a convenient ZIP file for you to download.
To start the process, go to your account settings on the web:
Click “Settings” under the account menu at the top of the dashboard (the person silhouette).
Select the blog you’d like to export on the right side of the page.
Scroll down to the “Export” section and click the “Export [blog name]” button.
You’ll see a message indicating that your backup is processing.
When your blog’s content is finished collecting (took a half hour and a refresh for mine), the processing message will be replaced with a “Download backup” button. Click this button to download a ZIP file of your blog’s exported contents.
Ok everyone, share this as much as you can.

Need Help Backing Up Tumblr?
Whether it’s your account or someone you follow, I would recommend using Tumblripper v3 The above should link you directly to the download. If you have virus protection software, scan it, but mine says it’s clean. It is mostly free and you can do up to three downloads. You can also download NSFW flagged accounts but you have to give it your email and password. I highly recommend it and will be updating my Tumblr archive folder until the 17th. If this has been helpful then please share!
When One Domino falls Tumblr End Prophecy
The thing is I don’t really want to leave tumblr. I know perhaps you will maybe think I should. And that if tumblr doesn’t want us why should we want to remain here?
But it’s not personal. Tumblr and other blogs don’t care about individual or groups and nor is it their job to. They are not your parents.
The thing is tumblr is making a terrible, terrible mistake because tumblr is actually a whole eco-system. Right now this eco-system is falling apart. I’m still hoping that against the odds some smart mind at tumblr figures it out.
We are a whole community of vanilla, kink, nsfw, and sfw all in harmony, side by side, and that has worked for long before i even heard about this place.
Tumblr wants to swap being special and the potential to really spread and grow (now they’re hitting the media as the former home of the refuge for the alternatives, the sexy erotica to be loved by women, couples, Men and people who are just bored of exploitative , soul-less porn with no real connection to the entertainer) for what is likely to be a very short-lived victory. On my bimbo blog I have always said it’s not about boobs or bleached hair, its about bringing a special kind of sparkle. Tumblr shone against the sea of platforms for alt people. But it’s kinda like the child with no sense of self, tumblr has lost its way and wants to be with the big kids and popular kids.
The reason I say tumblr has lost it’s way is because i truly truly believe we are watching them destroy themselves and that is actually very sad. The reason I say this is from my training on people - how people work.
The kitten posts are reblogged by the kink bloggers and then seen by the high-minded-stress heads who click on for a little fantasy reading and masturbation to restore them a little after a hard working week, and they didn’t set out to scroll looking for kittens but then they simply have to share with their online dating interest.
Tumblr is a very special community because unlike other platforms it is a community, and groups of inter-linked communities. I have never really fitted one community - and perhaps nobody does. I know many people have multi-blogs. But I’m surrounded by and rubbing shoulders with, held up and supported by : The bimbo community
The Sissy &/Trans transformation community
The Adult Ent community
The Traditional Gender Roles Community
The MaleDom Community
The BDSM Community
The Little Community
The Hypnosis Community
and many of my reblogs are from fashion/beauty and art blogs also and the damn kittens.
Even if I stuck to bimbo lifestyle blogging which I wanted to get back to. If half of the erotic hypnosis community go because they are actually artists working with models that may be “too sexy” , and all of the art nudes blogs go, and the poetic honour and obedience black and white BDSM blogs go , well there won’t be a lot left to inspire me. I have found tumblr inspiring. That was the thing tumblr inspired creativity because it was free and diverse. It promoted diversity, and so ordinary people laced their blogs with porn, artsy porn, romantic porn and explicit porn, right their next to suicide helplines, fashion advice, stories, poetry original and classic, diary entries that told all, the sexy, the sad, the suicidal and the thankful. I joined tumblr at a time of crippling anxiety and found real friends but tumblr also made me believe I could rebuild towards modelling again without being exploited or even having the danger of walking home late at night.
It may seem as though adult/ kinky/erotic blogs may be very far removed from the cuddly kittens and baking, but they’re not. The conversations lead to friendships with people who’s blogs really may not be to your personal taste, but then all too often, I meet a person who’s blogging isn’t really my cup of tea but it turns out we like the same art, or music, or have cats that look like identical twins.
I could remain here talking about bimbofication lifestyle stuff,. I could basically run a blog on bimbo lifestyle here within the rules , probably. I’d like to get rid of the spammy porn stuff. And actually I’ve seen a few adult ent folks that I really admire talking about staying too. And they really truly could gain a lot from tumblr by staying and simply post ads elsewhere and re-direct people for those. That could work, except … The community seems to be already splintering.
Somebody has pushed the first domino, but when one falls so do the ones touching it.
This describes exactly what Tumblr has been for me… A community of communities that intersect and learn from each other. A way to meet people from around the world who have the same interests I do. I regularly used to post my follower count so that followers of mine could realize that they weren’t alone or weird because they thought something completely legal was hot. But now, all that is being ripped away in the cruelest way possible. Ripped away with little explanation and no recourse because of the pursuit of something “better and more positive.”
Well, you know what, Tumblr has been a positive place to meet like minded people. And soon, Tumblr will be a sanitized place to meet no one.
Congratulations Tumblr… In two weeks, you’ve destroyed what took 11 years to build.
@staff
umm ditto to all this. So sad watching peeps ditch the sinking ship so fast :( Tumblr is gonna die for this. Its gotta be bad karma to disrupt a massive community, and with barely any warning too
They still have time to save it. The argument is reaching the mainstream but it’s mainly the wrong argument. Tumblr in many ways is the victim here and the blogs beyond the porn. If the porn blogs are the ones following , supporting and reblogging bimbo’s but the bimbo’s came for the hypnotists and beauty and fashion, the hypnotist came to be inspired by art/fiction/ethics debates, and in some cases meditation blogs. We are all propping each other up in a massive jenga tower. The people who speak on abuse education/ sex education/ health education - All of the upstanding looking citizens of tumblr that tumblr can be proud of in the mainstream media - they are also going to fall.
Its not the porn ban that is worrying its the tidal wave or “food chain”. @Hypdom, @bimbowhoreholly, we could imagine that we can survive the storm given that we do not simply reblog porn but how can we? I’m actually asking.
The tumblr alternatives I’m seeing really are not tumblr alternatives. They are porn tumblr. I’m not looking for that.
I’m trying to sort through my posts, the ones I actually have love for from my first years here really were not explicit enough for the porny tumblr alternatives. My blog was holistic. I don’t really want to join a porn “adult” network that is void of dazzle , love and sparkle.
This time I know it’s real, The feelings that I feel. I know if I put my mind to it. I know that I really can do it.
Save The Blogs!
Okay, folks. So. Tumblr’s jumped the shark in a big way, and I’m not even just talking about indiscriminately blocking all “adult” content on a platform that IS, in fact, primarily 18+.
Many blogs, like the wonderful @blackkatmagic , that are not especially NSFW have vanished.
(And I for one LIKE being able to go to curated porn blogs run by actual people and have a chance of finding stuff to my taste, it was one of the things that kept me on this hellsite, but that’s another issue entirely.)
I know lots of people are talking about migrating, but none of us are sure to where yet. Pillowfort seems to be an option, some people are talking about Twitter. But for now, it’s a mess, and even if we knew where we were going, it’s often a huge process, and a lot of us have stuff on tumblr that ONLY exists there. One possible quick solution to save your blogs, both NSFW and personal, is to import it to WordPress. I found this solution through from frantic googling on how to save an entire blog, text posts an all. There are several apps for downloading all the pictures from a tumblr, (Plently for Windows, but only a few paid ones for mac, of which Tumbelog Picture Downloader is working for me so far) but this is the only solution I’ve seen so far that allows you to save EVERYTHING. I downloaded my NSFW blog in like 10 min. My regular blog, which is significantly larger, is in the process of importing, but I don’t anticipate any problems. I will, of course, update you if I have any.
This tutorial I found worked really easily. http://quickguide (.) tumblr (.) com/post/39780378703/backing-up-your-tumblr-blog-to-wordpress
I put parenthesis around the .’s like we’re back in FF-Hell, just in case tumblr’s new thing about outgoing links kicks in. You know what to do. To break it down, just in case:
Sign up for a WordPress.com account at wordpress (.) com/start You’ll have to create an account, with your email, a username, and a password. They should send you a confirmation email immediately, check it, activate it, and you’re good to go. On the site, it will ask you for a site name. That page asks you a bunch of other information too, but you only have to fill out the site name.
Then you have to give your site a URL. If you’re lucky, your tumblr URL is still available, if not you’ll have to come up with another one, sorry.
It will tell you if that option is still available for free.
Then it will ask you to pick a plan. Free is really good enough, I swear.
Now you’re set up! You can import your tumblr! The only differences from the linked tutorial are that the Import button is now on the first level menu, not in tools.
Hit Import, then you have to follow the link for “other importers” at the bottom, to find the option for Tumblr.
Then you’ll have to sign in with tumblr, using your normal tumblr credentials. You’ll be redirected there automatically. You’ll have to allow Wordpress permissions on your blog.
Then your blogs, including all your sideblogs, will show up in wordpress.
Hit import, wait a WHILE depending on the size of your blog, and you’re done!
ALSO!!
I made my NSFW blog private for now, since I don’t know WP’s policy on NSFW.
This means that to access it, someone has to have an account and request access. But hey, part of our problem on this hellsite has been people going places they aren’t wanted, so I don’t personally see this as a bad thing. They can send a request from the landing site on your blog, you get an email, click a link in the email, and PRESTO, they have access. To make it private, go to Settings > Reading > Site Visibility. Go back and check, it took me changing the setting twice for it to actually stick. tl;dr, you can import your entire blog to wordpress in just a few steps.
Edited almost immediately to add that Wordpress allows posting reblogging, commenting, AND following, and so it seems like honestly the most logical next place for fandom in my opinion. It also allows a high degree of customization. I’m going to tag the hell out of this, in no particular order. PLEASE reblog this and spread the word so people know it’s an option. If you’re having trouble, PM me, and I’m happy to help.

There are a whole bunch more, but that’s a start. Please reblog the hell out of this, so people are aware of this one simple option. EDIT: We’re not sure yet about wordpress’ stance on NSFW, so definitely mark those blogs private for now. I had one person tell me they got nuked for one NSFW post on a 7 year old blog. Definitely look into other solutions for backing up your blog just in case Private isn’t good enough. There seem to be lots of options for Windows, including Python. A quick google search will turn up several. I’m still looking for a good option for Mac. Anyone know any?
December 17th - a rescue plan
Some good news, I’ve been talking to two developers now and got them working together, we just had a meeting with the guys behind an existing large (millions of users) site similar to Tumblr, with a vibrant and open-minded community, and more importantly, it has open-minded owners who believe in free speech. They think we can get something done here to rescue the whole community.
I’m not allowed to reveal the site name yet. I can tell you it’s mainstream, open to everyone, open-minded and welcoming. (It’s not WordPress or any site owned by Facebook or Twitter. It’s not Pillowfort, that’s in closed beta. It’s not Ello, that’s mainly for artists. It’s not kinkspace or fetlife, those are too specialist. It’s not jux, that seems to be closed. It’s not Soup, that seems still in development and too small.)
One of the reasons for delaying the announcement for next few days is they don’t want a “land grab” where people take the names of current popular Tumblr users over there (cyber squatting). So they are looking at ways for existing Tumblr users to keep the same names on the new site.
More info over the days to come.
The plan is, broadly:
1. By December 9th, announcement of the new site and how to secure your username there
2. By December 10th, an online tool for bloggers to copy their existing content to the new site automatically, with the same tags and captions.
3. Bloggers will need to copy their content across between December 10th and December 17th if they want to use the automatic tool.
4. My understanding is that after December 17th there will be no public access to any “flagged” posts on Tumblr, but the original poster will still be able to see the flagged post (for a short time at least). Therefore, the original poster may still be able to manually download a post to their own PC or phone, after December 17th, and manually upload it to the other site. But if you have lots of posts that will take a long time, it will be better to use the automatic tool before December 17th.
Please understand that these dates are approximate and may change for technical or other reasons.
There may be a few rough edges or not so perfect looking site design on the transfer tool. Everyone is doing their best. The main goal here is to help as many people as possible preserve access to their content, in the short space of time Tumblr has allowed us, and preserve as much as possible of the Tumblr community spirit somewhere new.
The new site will cater for photo, GIF, text and html posts. It will not offer video and audio posts, due to cost reasons - maybe in future, but for now you will need to preserve video and audio content yourself in some other place.
If your Tumblr blog has a mixture of original content and reblogs, or all reblogs, all of that can be copied over to the new site. Reblogs will become “your” original content if nobody else posted them yet, otherwise they will be shown as reblogs. The devs are looking at ways to preserve attribution of reblogs back to the original Tumblr poster, if that person also moves to the new site.
Important: your Likes cannot be copied from Tumblr to the new site. You will have to go find the same posts again on the new site, and like them afresh.
(Similarly, existing reblog comments, asks, messages and other user interaction on Tumblr cannot be copied to the new site - that’s just too much to do, in the short time available.)
If you want to preserve any of your existing Liked posts on Tumblr, you will need to either: (1) download the post to your own PC, or: (2A) reblog it now to your own Tumblr blog, and then (2B) use the automatic tool, before December 17th, to move your whole Tumblr blog across to the new site.
If you have Liked a lot of posts here on Tumblr, the gridllr.com webapp should be able to help you do steps 1 and 2A quickly, I mean download or reblog.
(Someone complained to me today about the appearance of Gridllr on a phone. It’s best to use Gridllr on a PC, Mac or Tablet with a large screen.)
If you have liked a post here on Tumblr and the original poster decides to delete it, or even to delete their entire blog, some time before December 17th, then that post will be permanently lost. So if you want to be sure to preserve any of your Liked posts, you should best download or reblog as soon as possible. If it’s reblogged to your own blog it is safe from deletion, at least for next few days.
Obviously, you will lose access, after December 17th, to all past posts you have liked, if Tumblr has flagged them as NSFW. Again, the steps (1), or (2A) and (2B) covered above will be the only way to hold on to these posts.
