30 Days of Pride: 30 Canonically LGBT Characters For June
Buck Vu (The OA) is a trans boy.
Joined a BP Facebook group and tried to politely defend enrichment and tubs larger than shoeboxes and ended up getting the "Ball pythons are pet rocks! They hurt themselves if you give them climbing materials! It's the large cage that stresses them out, it doesn't matter how much you clutter it!" and I just feel kinda defeated I guess? I don't really know how to continue because I posted a bunch of articles on why enrichment helps snakes, and they just laughed at me. Advice?
just keep chugging and dont get emotional about it. thatâs what youre going to encounter most of the time, sadly. also dont try to shove it in their faces because it makes them defensive. you gotta come at them like âoh hey⊠so actually you can keep them in larger enclosures as long as they are well furnished. also because they are terrestrial doesnt mean âomg the branches are lava.â they can still navigate over 2 ft obstacles without injury.â and so on. as soon as they start getting defensive, bow out cuz they wont have an open mind about it.sometimes you win.sometimes you lose.youll lose a lot.the ball python hobby sucks.
My thing about enrichment for snakes is this: Technically birds are reptiles right? Theyâre known to benefit from toys and enrichment. So why canât other reptiles?
So my friend and I went to Petco about a week ago to get some tiny snails for her dwarf puffer. While she was getting those, I looked at the bettas. Â I was planning for my next betta to be an elephant ear, but as soon as I saw this little white butterfly with no fins (either he bit them off or he had severe fin rot), I grabbed him.
Friend and I named him âEggâ due his white color and fragile appearance. He is now in a heated, filtered, cycled, and planted 20 gallon tank. Originally, I was waiting for the plants (mainly anubias and java ferns) to grow in a bit more before moving Clown into it, but things change. Iâve been treating him with MelaFix and aquarium salt, and he is doing so good. His fins are starting to grow back, and he has so much personality. I have a couple pieces of wood in his tank that Iâm trying to sink, and he just loves playing in them. Heâs starting to get a nice purple tint too.
Itâs hard to get a good picture of him now because he doesnât stop moving. I will try to keep this post updated with Eggâs progress
Quick Egg Update:
He has started to associate me with food and now does the Wiggle Dance âą whenever I go to check on him. His fins are still slowly growing back in, and his color has gotten a lot more vibrant. Iâve cut back on the MelaFix since he seems to be thriving with the appropriate enclosure as well as frozen foods.Â
Another Egg Update:Â
Look how pretty heâs gotten!! My phone camera doesnât do him justice, heâs so vibrant now. Heâs even started to get a bit of red on his fins. Since he doesnât really look like an egg anymore, Iâve been calling him Boey (to keep the Fire Emblem theme running). So for now, heâs my Egg-Boey. I canât wait to see what he looks like when his fins are fully grown in.Â
Egg Boey Update:
Boeyâs name is now officially Boey!Â
Now that his fins are really starting to grow in, I decided he would be better off in a quieter tank (since the 20g he was in before has a strong-ish filter as well as a bubbler), so I switched him with Clown. I think heâs much happier in the 10g with the AquaClear since the flow isnât as strong.Â
(Sorry this one is blurry)
Heâs growing into such a handsome young man and Iâm so proud of him!! He doesnât even look like the same fish anymore.
