First ever yogic art exhibit opens in Washington DC this fall!
compassion, baby!
Super inspired by the Boetti exhibit at MoMA today. All of his work explored the duality of our existence- order vs. disorder, our need to organize what is inherently chaotic. He liked to use existing ideas, images and material in his work so that we could experience what is already around us in a new way. He honored small differences and celebrated the side of him that felt lazy and useless. He started putting an "and" (or é in italian) between his first and last name so that he could essentially split his persona.... The man and his shadow. He used the postal service in his work and enjoyed enlisting a governmental agency in his art without them actually knowing about or condoning it. Love this guy.

The earth moves under my feet.
Just paging through some old notes and came upon this one from several months ago...
One of my private yoga students lives close to where they have been building the 2nd Avenue subway line on the Upper East Side. There are numerous explosions daily. One long horn is followed by two- and then boom! The ground rumbles, and you feel the wave of the explosion, even from her 5th floor apartment. After the explosion, one more long horn. It's over.
I've practiced yoga in chaotic settings such as Times Square and on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Practicing in NYC alone is always an experience of finding peace and stillness among the turmoil and endless distractions.
But this experience feels a bit more poignant- I mean the earth is literally crumbling beneath us.
I know, yoga metaphors.... bear with me, please.
What an amazing gift to experience an internal sense of stability when everything around you is breaking. We simply can not control the fact that things change. What we count on today may not be true tomorrow. How are we to cope with that?
Attachement theory is a developmental psychology theory that postulates that having a "secure base" it what allows us to grow, explore and become whole, integrated human beings. Initially it's a parent, then a partner, but along the way, when it all works out right, it becomes internalized. We develop a sense of safety and connection, inside.
The yogis might argue that it was there all along- that it's a process of uncovering or allowing enough space, silence and awareness to see it.
The earth moves and our lives bring us situations that we never dreamed we'd have to endure.
Look inside. Connect. The unwavering secure base will be there.
One more long horn. It's over.
it's all about attention...
I mean, seriously?! Cuteness.
Favorite quotes from the Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research at the beautiful Asilomar in Monterey, California:
"Yoga is the science of health. You don't make time in your life for yoga. Yoga teaches you how to live." Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, The Yoga Insitute, Mumbai India
"Truth is one, many are the ways." Rama Jyoti Vernon and countless yogis and yoginis before her...
OCNJ. Perfect day!
"The data that negative mental states cause heart problems is just stupendous. The data is just as established as smoking, and the size of the effect is the same."

A thing of beauty: sullivan street bakery bread, fresh ground almond butter & local LES honey. I'll get up for that, thank you!
