Magistrate Courts

During this session we met at the Magistrate Courts to watch open trails which the public can sit in and watch. This experience was all new to me because I have never been inside a court. When we entered the building, we had to go through airport-style security to get into the main waiting hall. We had to remove hats and hoods (at all times), not have any drinks and we were not allowed to take photos or have our phones on. The Victorian architecture on the inside was amazing which is reflected on the outside of the building. This grand building reflects the authority figures who sit inside and decide people’s fate.

Once inside, we split into two groups to watched separate court trials. My group managed to see 3 different trials. There was certain formalities in the court, so we had to stand up when the judge entered and be quiet. The first man was guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol, had no insurance and also was in possessions of drugs. He was already found guilty for these kind of offences, he already had 7 years off the road and had been to prison. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, had to pay the court fees and was not allowed to drive for 3 years (which didn’t matter because we wasn’t allowed to drive for 7 years anyway). This reoffended showed no emotion or remorse for his actions.

The next man was on trial for assaulting his sister and stealing money from her. Luckily, his sister did not press charges. The man suffers from mental health issues, so the court took this into consideration. This man would only have to 80 hours on unpaid work and be on probation. It was this mans’ first conviction, so he seemed nervous for the verdict and seemed grateful for the advocates work.

During the 3rd trial we had to leave early. When this man came up the stairs, he had two custom officers with him (instead of 1, like the others) this showed that this man was capable of showing resistance. As a result, this already gave us a negative outlook on this man. The man on trial had his hood up and was asked  to remove it. He looked in is early twenties and was shouting about how long he had been waiting in a cell to the custom officer (his language was very explicit). When the judge entered, the man was reluctant to stand up and was also shouting at the custom officer. The judge had to tel him to be quiet. This man was very disrespectful, which was shown in his offenses. His was on trial for 7 different assaults - racist verbal assault and physical. He was given the choice to have the trail here or in the Crown Court because his crimes were so serious, however is advocates told him to have his trial at the Magistrate Court. Sadly, we had to leave shortly after this so I do not know the outcome of the trail.

Own practice notes: Only men were trailed in the court room I visited (3 men). However, only one woman was on trial (for not paying a fine) in the other groups court room. The other people on trial were men.

Jonny Briggs Session

Dem & Jonny asked us to come up with a list of 10 different ideas of what I would like to do / produce that link with criminology (for Tuesday 20th February):

Forensic - identity - finger prints: Take lots of different people’s finger/hand prints, could collage / make prints.

Destruction of evidence - criminals trying to hide - bleach / wiping weapon: Photograph weapons / bodies (victims)/ crime scenes then destroying the photos with bleach.

Gender - how it plays a role? young boy/girl if missing? ‘Doll House’ research. Focus on female - link to textiles? Artist: Annette Messager: embroidery & mixed media piece. could base on famous murders in newspapers.

Authority figures - role reverse - confusing e.g. Charlie Chaplin - Costume  - the impact of wearing a suit / high-Visibility: Create a piece of fashion made out of Hi-Vis

Forensics materials used, so don't contaminate crime scene: Forensic collage - using test tubes, dishes, gloves with images of body parts inside.

Fear- photography: Capture different people’s faces/body portraying fear. Get inspired by Realism photog - collage 

Lack of trust in the police/ other authority:  photog & photoshop authority figures with something that undermines their authority e.g. a policeman holding a blooded knife standing next dead body.

Fake crime scene/courtroom - pretend its real, awkwardly placed objects. Dressing up makes it seem real. Aesthetics.  Truth or fiction: Recreate crime scenes from famous cases in fake environment. But instead of using realist murder related objects/blood, use random weapons e.g. banana as gun, blood is purple paint. 

Prisons- atmosphere in them (my own experience) maybe look/visit old dungeons = history still an horrid atmosphere created if tho not used.: Photography - visit old dungeons / prisons - recreate a prisoner inside the room. Use long exposure to capture a prisoners pacing the room.

Comedy- death - or mocks a serious situation (Broomberg & Chanarin) or like the Monty Python sketch - mocks death. Artist Damien First- dead animals in liquid. Find a real life bad situation - find photos - photoshop to mock them, e.g. no food in Africa - photoshop in food (maybe a food not many people like e.g. Gherkins). Watch:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoBTsMJ4jNk

Super inspired by the Boetti exhibit at MoMA today. All of his work explored the duality of our existence- order vs. disorder, our need to organize what is inherently chaotic. He liked to use existing ideas, images and material in his work so that we could experience what is already around us in a new way. He honored small differences and celebrated the side of him that felt lazy and useless. He started putting an "and" (or é in italian) between his first and last name so that he could essentially split his persona.... The man and his shadow. He used the postal service in his work and enjoyed enlisting a governmental agency in his art without them actually knowing about or condoning it. Love this guy.
