Ohhh my god just thinking about what Randy went through makes me sick.
He’s forever the nerd during his school years. The autistic film geek of his friend group. And sure, he was best friends with Stu, and it’s not like his friends didn’t like him, but there was always the disconnect. He was always a little different.
And then after the Ghostface attack happens, he’s even worse. He’s got all this trauma now, he can’t sleep at night, he found out his best friend in the entire world was a maniac serial killer, and lost most of his highschool friends. Absolute hell for this boy.
But then if we look at Scream 2, he’s still the outlier. When he’s talking to Dewey he says how everyone got famous or up and coming actors and he just got a nobody and a minor role. He watched Sidney get swamped with press, he watches Gale get fame for her book, Tatum forever lives on in everyone’s hearts, hell, Billy and Stu get more attention and fame and praise than Randy does.
What about the version of Randy that died? Does he live on in everyone’s hearts? What about the Randy that fought and killed, maybe not like Sidney did, but fought himself. Fought the intrusive thoughts and the nightmares, fought the depression and anxiety and paranoia. How come nobody noticed he was struggling, but Sidney could just sneeze and someone would ask if she’s alright?
Randy isn’t upset at the people who got more fame. He doesn’t hate them for what they have, it’s not like they took it from him, but he’s still jealous.
Randy is forever the side character. The nerd. The film geek. He’s just…Randy. Not survivor, or fighter, or even best friend. He is and forever will be…Just Randy.
