I wish kit culture had been more developed in canon. Do u have any tips or ideas to help flesh that out? For example I was thinking that kits could help out around camp, help the medicine cat with organizing herbs, little things like that. On another note, what do u think abt kits moving to a new den when they turn 4 months old?
Oh man kit culture is like my fav thing.
First of all, its easy to make kits and kit culture really simple. Its really really hard to write believable children. It can be easy to make them really childish and immature, or too old. A good way to look at things is that children arent stupid, in fact they are very intelligent, they just are more emotionally unstable, and have less life experience.
Looking at children and their games, as well as the way they develop emotionally and mentally might be helpful when looking at kits. Ive already written a post on the physical development of kits, so now you have to figure out how the clan helps these kits develop mentally and emotionally.
I do like the idea of there being a secondary nursery. Ive always thought that once a kitten reaches ¾ moons they are a bit too old to be in the same place as the younger smaller kits. Again its something thats easily forgotten or overlooked that ¾ moon kits are easily half the size of many adults, and kittens of the bigger breeds are even bigger. I put this in bold because it means that a lot of the canon treatment of them is very odd when you put that into context.
In my worldbuilding I often have them starting training in smaller ways, starting their official education. These are the moons I like to devote to learning the clan code, clan laws, some basic first aid. Its a lot how we have things in elementary school which are the basics which allow children to be able to survive in the world. Also these would be the moons where kits might be taken on short field trips outside of camp. With escorts of course. This is to give kits familiarity with the outside of camp, and discourage kits from going out on their own and getting lost. In the wild kits often leave their parents at this age anyway, so respecting their desire and need to get out and explore helps to curb more destructive behaviors of going out alone when they could be in danger.
Of course all of the details depend on the culture. A more strict clan might start training earlier, or give more responsibility to kits, expect them to keep their nursery clean/ orderly. A more free-form clan might delay training and allow kits to have a longer more kithood with more personal development and joy.
Anyway. Ive had fun looking at childhood games i enjoyed or was most familiar with, and have about three or four which I intend to use in my writing, and others are welcome to as well!
Scatter- Analogue to tag. One kit is chosen as the Falcon/Hawk/Eagle whichever predator or raptor is most common in the area. The others are then told to “Scatter!” and whoever is the predator goes after them. Once the predator catches one of the other kits, it is their turn as the predator. The game is supposed to teach kits to be mindful of their surroundings, how to run from predators (zig zagging is a good tactic), and even how to hide from them if necessary. It also teaches the kits a trigger word in case they are playing outside and a predator is spotted, “Scatter!” prompts them to hide and run.
The next is an analogue to “Red light Green light” though I dont have a name for it quite yet. One kit is the leader, the other kits start off a certain amount away. The leader turns around and then calls out “Stalk!’ (or something else im not quite positive about it). The other kits start moving forward slowly, like stalking prey. The leader, after whenever they feel like it, calls “Freeze!” And then whirls around. If the leader catches anyone moving they have to go back to the starting point. The leader switches whenever a kit reaches them without being caught. The game teaches stealth and good hunting crouch technique, as well as how to immediately freeze if prey gets nervous.
Last for now is their form of hide and seek. Thats not hard of course, it teaches patience, stealth, and other practical skills in the form of play.
I do intend to write up sections on every single rank, and hopefully by then I will have more to add on kit culture. Anyway, hope this is a nice start :)
This is awesome!
Not really warriors related, but I did something similar for my Lioden Pride;
"The Pride holds all cubs, whether in or out of the Pride, in high regards. Cubs are primarily taken care of by their mother and the Den Mother's, but are often played with by the King and Queen themselves. Cubs are trained by the King between the ages of 5 months and 1 year in various tasks such as wrestling, stalking and climbing. The Queen teaches the cubs the Pride's laws and helps ensure that they understand what consequences could be given out if those laws are broken. Cubs are encouraged to play and train, but they are forbidden to step foot outside of the camp without an adult to protect them. Den Mothers will often use games such as 'catch the bone' or 'chase the mouse' as ways to distract and engage the cubs when needed."
Update!
Hey everyone. As I said, here is the update post.
First off, I plan on starting to post regularly. Even if i have to make several posts at one time and schedule them to upload at certain points.
Second, as this is a Warrior Cat blog for not only the books, but also my own characters, I plan on posting more redesigns and ref sheets now that I find a ref sheet on my computer that I really like and want to use.
Third, I have been thinking of making this into a main blog. Basically, to do that, I would archive everything and make a new account with the same name/url after it became available. What does everyone think of this? Also, should I open asks/submissions if they arent open? (I'm currently on mobile so I'm not sure if they're open)
Please reblog this and let me know what you guys think of my questions.
Coming Later!!
Be tuned in my for my opinion on River of Fire! I got the book yesterday from the library and have already read it. Oh boy do I have some things to pick at!! Of course, as always, the post will be tagged and flagged for spoilers. If you read below the "read more" line, that's on you, not me.
Also, on a side note, I have an update post coming next. Hope everyone reads it.

Any basic tips for making genetically accurate warriors?
um learn genetics really! it sounds alarming at first but basic cat genetics is actually pretty easy to get a wrap around. here’s a good idea- here are some “official” colour names for cat colours. the second colours listed are the dilute forms.
[red and cream are very different colours than the black series, which includes black, chocolate and cinnamon. they’re controlled by phaeomelanin rather than eumelanin]
Red, or Cream (common descriptors: ginger, yellow, sandy, pale, there’s lots of words for reds and creams because they have lots of variety)ex. firestar and sandstorm
Black, or Blue (Blue is the official word for gray. a “black tabby” can look like black stripes on gray base, or black stripes on brown base. they’re all called black tabbies, but some people also call black stripes on brown base “brown tabbies”. people will typically understand that better than black tabby, in my experience)tigerstar is a black tabby. bluestar and willowpelt are blue cats.
Chocolate, or Lilac (These aren’t truly colours you’d ever see in feral cats, but that’s not super important. However, it’s hard to say what cats fit this description since “brown tabby” is used often to describe a black tabby.)mousefur is probably a chocolate cat. heatherstar is probably a lilac cat.
Cinnamon, or Fawn (Again, not colours you’d ever really see in a feral population. cinnamon and fawn can even be hard to identify, and can look like chocolate or lilac cats.)oakheart kinda sounds like he’s a cinnamon cat. reddish-brown is a good descriptor.
those are the basics you can work with. there’s also torties which combine any of the black series (black, chocolate, cinnamon and their dilutes) with the red series (red or cream). tortie combos are as follows:
black/redchocolate/redcinnamon/redblue/creamlilac/creamfawn/cream
to describe a tortie properly, you would say “a [black series] tortie” since the red or cream is a given. for example, tawnypelt is (probably) a blue tortie.
if you use official words to describe your cats, at least in your notes, it’s a lot easier to figure out genetics of them. it’s annoying picking apart romantic canon descriptions to figure out what they’re actually supposed to be. not to mention, plenty of impossible colour combos.
as an aside, certain breeds use different words for colours. in pointed cats, black is referred to as “seal”. and in abyssinians, black is known as “ruddy” and actually looks very red.
i know you said basic, but i’m not exactly sure what you were looking for. hopefully this helps a bit. there’s lots of resources out there, even generators where you can plug in your cat’s info and get kittens out of it. here are a couple more quick tips.
you can’t have dilute and non-dilute colours on one cat, unless they are some kind of chimera. ex: you cannot have a black and gray cat, a la a merle dog.
an XY cat will ALWAYS take its mother’s base colour. if you have a black molly, her XY kittens will be black (or gray). if she carries a gene, it might be chocolate or even cinnamon, but it came from the mother, not the father. this one took me a while to wrap my head around so if you need more explaining just ask.
an XX cat will always be a combination of its mother and father’s colours. a black series cat mating with a red series cat will always result in XX torties.
red series is ALWAYS dominant over black series. they are sometimes co-dominant, as seen in torties, but in an XY cat, it will be red. a cat cannot “carry” red, they will always show it.
if you have any specific questions, lmk! i’m still learning myself, so if you see any info that is wrong, please let me know.

Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

Meet Ashsky! Originally apart of my old roleplay called OceanClan, she has now been redesigned and is no longer apart of.. OceanClan. You can find her old design located here. On her old OceanClan reference sheet, I had one notable ancestor listed for her and that was Graystripe. You can tell by her old design that I did indeed design her after him. I kept him in her family line, but I have made it much more believable by this family tree.
Is it okay if i make an excel spreadsheet like yours for a warriors rewrite im doing? When i saw yours I thought that was such a brilliant idea of keeping things organized ;v;
yeah sure i dont own the idea lol it’s super helpful and i would encourage more people to try doing it, especially for big cast stories like Warriors.
a couple of things tho!:
change the color of the sheet to the custom color: Red: 205 Green: 255 Blue: 205. Green is a calming color and is also easier to look at while working instead of a bright white screen for hours (this is a good thing for when you’re writing too!)
I dont just change the color of the gender cells for aesthetics, seeing the words, female female male female male female can get very confusing! Coloring them in helps me differentiate them and keeps them from blurring together
I cut these off for spoiler reasons but my other 3 cells are Role, Goal and Fate. Having a a short sentence telling me the characters role in the story as well as their own personal goals helps me figure out where to go with them in the story and build their character. The fate cell is for when they ultimately die which can be left blank until you’re ready to kill them off but is good to have so you don’t forget who’s dead lol
Have fun and happy writing! :)
The Clans have an interesting system of discrimination.
They consider no difference between male and female cats. Both can hunt, fight, and care for kits. Some mollys wouldn’t set foot in the nursery for all the prey in the forest, and some have been known to give birth and almost immediately resume their warrior duties. Some toms love kits above all else and prefer to spend their days in camp caring for the kits. Any gender of cat is capable of caring for the Clan. No one skills set is more important than the others.
Nor do they consider LGBT cats unusual. A cat is free to love whoever they wish once they are a warrior. Surrogate parents are not uncommon in same-sex couples. If the surrogate wishes to be involved they are welcome to, but if they do not wish to be the Clan would consider the kits related to their bio-parent only in the loosest sense.
Likewise, trans cats have but to inform the Clan and immediately all cats consent to their wishes. Once a cat is aware that another cat is trans, they would not even consider misgendering the trans cat, it would not even cross their mind, even if the two are long-time enemies.
Blind, deaf, or mute cats are treated respectfully. As cats use body language and words to communicate, adaption is quick and efficient. This is a Clan, they survive by supporting each other. Around blind cats, the Clan will speak more rather than relying on body language, while with deaf cats they’ll rely on body language to communicate. Cats with injured limbs or wounds are nursed back to health by the Clan. Few injuries are so serious to prevent a cat from being a warrior.
For cats with mental illness, they are supported by their friends. Any cat may hold a private audience with a medicine cat at any time. The medicine cat would never reveal what they had been told without good reason, and doing otherwise would be a serious crime. A Clan does whatever it must to protect its members.
To be clear: kits don’t need this explained to them. This is just how cats are. All cats. Cats don’t judge.
However the Clans do discriminate based on lifestyle choices.
The Clans dislike one another, not on an individual level but in general. It’s commonly said - and somewhat true that a cat of one Clan could not manage life in another Clan. WindClan mocks RiverClan. ThunderClan distrusts ShadowClan. They have unique identities as groups which both hold them together and apart. But there is no one Clan at the bottom of this. The Clans regard the other Clans in more or less the same way. WindClan may call RiverClan fish-eaters but in the same breath they speak of ShadowClan and frogs.
Most Clan cats also dislike kittypets, and all consider non-Clan cats generally inferior at best. If an individual kittypet or rogue proves themselves to be a survivor, the Clans will, of course, acknowledge that. Some moreso than others, but Clan cats base their assessment of others on their ability to survive.

I will elaborate more on my thoughts later but I honestly like Tigerhearts Shadow. I like how they made clan cats live with city cats for a while and actually showed what city cats (other than kittypets) would/might behave like. I'm glad they gave Blossom and Thorns one kit a gender ❤ And I hope they write about how Rowanstar died and why he is calling himself Rowanclaw instead. And also, I hope that Dovewing goes to ThunderClan first before heading straight for ShadowClan. I mean, it would be kind of cruel to Ivypool and her parents if she didn't. And I'm wondering who Ivypool will end up with.
thank you so much! -Sparrownose
You're very welcome! c:
this ended up being really long I’m sorry. so I posted the Naming Systems on my sideblog @sparrownose and I’ll be posting more in-depth profiles for the Clans there. but here are the basics! if it’s too long for you to do or you want to do it in sections I understand!
Hello! It is rather long but no worries, I don’t mind longer submissions, just took a while to get to because life got in the way! I’ve followed your sparrownose blog, and I recommend that my other followers do the same, you have some wonderful ideas going here!
Onto the Clans, adding a readmore for length:
there are six Clans total who live in a large valley. in the center of the Valley is an empty, rocky land called the Barrens, this is where they meet for Gatherings and such. there is no sacred place to speak with their ancestors, which I will get into in just a second and medicine cats meet to talk in the same place where Gatherings are held.
This seems like a good setting, reminds me of the original idea I had for one of my own stories actually. So they live in the areas around the edge of the valley, correct? Is there any mythology surrounding the Barrens? I imagine this would be a rather large area, have any other outside groups tried to settle in the Barrens? Are the Gatherings very widespread, like the whole clan comes to mingle with others?
these Clans worship SkyClan, which is lead by the Moon and the Sun. it is said that the Sun watches over them during the day, protecting those who sleep and giving light to those who aren’t. the Moon has the same job but at night. during the day their ancestors play and hunt among the clouds, while at night they gather to tell stories among the stars. medicine cats and leaders are not given a special connection to SkyClan and leaders do not receive nine lives. leaders also keep their warrior name instead of receiving the suffix -star.
I like this belief system, it makes a lot of sense! Kinda reminds me a lot of how some African religions work, with ancestors and gods watching over the Clans but not really interacting with them. I also like how the leaders will keep their warrior name instead of receiving a suffix, to me it would say that leaders aren’t above their fellow clanmates and would make them seem more approachable. Plus the nine lives thing is honestly kinda weird in canon, and definitely would not make sense with the way SkyClan is setup in your world, so I’m glad that got dropped as well.
With their religion, I might guess they would pray and give offerings to the Sun and Moon and other members of SkyClan? Maybe ask for blessings and health for their Clan? I seriously really like this disconnect, it’s a pretty unique idea that I haven’t seen very often in the Warrior fanfics and such. There’s lots of stuff you could build on here with SkyClan, such as where the idea came from, and what Clanmember might think about spirituality and how it would affect their day to day life.
instead of the Warrior Code they follow the Code of Light, which is much more extensive and much stricter. it is the leader’s job to enforce this Code.
Another good idea, if you hadn’t done it already it would be good to write this down somewhere for reference! If it’s much more strict, I’d assume it plays a big role in the cat’s lives and would be good for apprentices to memorize before they become warriors.
since medicine cats are seen as on the same level as warriors, there are multiple medicine cats in each clan. though they don’t have as many as they do warriors it is still usually upwards of four plus apprentices.
This is something I haven’t actually come across before and it’s very original! Lot’s of interesting conflicts and ideas could come off having more than one medicine cat. Do the medicine cats hunt and fight as much as the warriors and be medicine cats as a secondary thing? What jobs do they have? Does each medicine cat have a different medicine cat job, for example is it Blackclaw’s job to collect herbs, Rabbitface’s job to act as a therapist, and Fernleaf’s job to deal with the diseased cats while Clovernose helps the injured cats?
CreekClan lives in a marsh between ForestClan and SwampClan. there are several creeks running through their territory, hence the name. they are good swimmers and excellent fishers, meaning most of them are agile and have good reflexes. they are slightly more active during the night but still patrol regularly during the day. they have developed the tradition of coating their fur in mud to give themselves camouflage.
these cats are pretty strict when it comes to the Code, though not as strict as MoorClan. they are very political and put a lot of importance on ranking. they are known to be vain despite their muddy terrain, often using the mud as war paint or for ceremonial purposes. they are also pretty superstitious from the myths surrounding the nearby swamp, though few like to admit it.
they are also known for trying to stay neutral during conflicts between other Clans. they find it disgraceful to bring others into a situation that has nothing to do with them and are very adverse to asking for help from the other Clans.
They seem well adapted to their territory! I like the use of mud in their culture, it sets them apart from the other clans a lot. It could be interesting if they used different types/ colors of mud for different purposes but that’s just me.
I also might think they’d use some larger bodies of water for fishing, as creeks are pretty small and would have small fish. Do they also hunt things like frogs and birds that live along the creeks?
They overall seem like a pretty peaceful group, kind of closed off from the others and proud. What makes them put importance on ranking, do they have big ceremonies and festivals when a cat becomes a warrior? It’d be interesting to see how they might treat their leaders and medicine cats differently than the other clans!
ForestClan lives in the forest, with GladeClan on one side and CreekClan on the other. their territory has many trees and thick undergrowth, making most of these cats rather light sensitive as the canopy and brush protect them from the sun. they are equally active during the day and night, they are known to have excellent vision and to be very stealthy.
these cats aren’t as strict with the Code as the other Clans, mostly because they don’t feel as connected to the sky as they often can’t see it. they allow atheists in their clan but don’t encourage it and force them to keep it a secret from the other Clans.
ForestClan is definitely more family-like than the other clans, though they are extremely strict about keeping up appearances around the other Clans.
ForestClan seems a bit more relaxed and welcoming than CreekClan.
I like that you added they’re light sensitive, it makes sense since they’re not in the sun as much as the other clans. I’d think they might be heat sensitive as well, since the forest would be cooler and since forest cats are usually darker colors like black and brown tabby.
I also like how the sky plays a role in their spirituality and relationship to SkyClan, and it seems very practical. Intersting how they allow cats to be more open about their atheism, I’d guess the other Clans may have some skeptics that have to stay hidden as well, but that part seems to go well with ForestClan’s laid back vibe.
The part about the Code makes me think the Clans were given the code by SkyClan? Could be fun to add to their lore, if you wanted.
GladeClan is nestled between ForestClan and MoorClan. their territory is mostly composed of spaced out trees, making them excellent climbers and bird hunters. they are agile and very good at jumping, whether from on the ground or from tree to tree. they are most active during the day when birds are out and about, though there are a few night patrols.
these cats are a little less strict on the Code than the other Clans, but not as much as ForestClan or SwampClan. they are also less active than other clans and very conscious about their surroundings. they decorate their dens and nests with pretty rocks, feathers, flowers, and anything else they find aesthetically pleasing. they bring prey to Gatherings to trade for shells from CreekClan and often trade prey with MoorClan for the wildflowers that grow there. they like putting flowers and feathers in their fur for ceremonies and Gatherings.
these cats usually aren’t fond of conflict, they don’t put a lock of stock into battle training and aren’t very territorial. this is because they know the other Clans couldn’t hunt birds reliably like they do, so taking their territory would be pointless. the only Clan they even slightly worry about is ForestClan but they’ve always had a good relationship with them. they are usually pacifists and don’t take sides when conflict breaks out between other clans.
I think their choice of territory is pretty unique, but not at all bad. I also might think they’re the kind of Clan to go a bit outside their territory during harsher seasons, since most birds wouldn’t stick around a single spot especially during winter.
Their decorating is a good idea, and like CreekClan’s mud, sets them and their culture apart from the other clans. They seem very cute and relaxed actually, like you could easily befriend any of them. I also really like the trading that they do at gatherings, it gives them a sort of peacemaker vibe. I feel like their clan would have the most culture to it overall, and have some good story tellers.
Very good here, I think they’re my favorite so far :)
MarshClan is set between MoorClan and SwampClan. their territory has less trees than CreekClan, despite the similarities between their territories. they are known for their prowess in combat and their agility. they have to be dexterous to navigate the muddy, unpredictable terrain.
these cats are very strict when it comes to the Code and put a lot of emphasis on survival of the fittest. they often pick fights with other Clans just as a show of power and to flex their claws in real combat. they are active equally during the day and night and are the most active Clan, making them very lean/muscular. they firmly believe wasting any time is disgraceful.
MarshClan is the only Clan where internal conflicts are solved with a fight. leaders can be challenged for their rank with one-on-one combat. there are notably less medicine cats in this Clan and the ones they do have are often hunting.
When people have clans set in marshes, I usually imagine something similar to the Farmington Bay, Utah, with mostly water and zero trees. But if there are trees in your mashes, they’d probably be smaller and more dead than those in CreekClan. Marshes are difficult to live in, but would have a vast variety of prey, so they would have to be strong and agile to survive there.
Because of their territory being harsher than the others, I’m not surprised at their ‘survival of the fittest’ mindset. How does that play into their lives though, would they through out a weak, disabled cat, or a kid born a bit too small? It’d be interesting to see how that would affect their relationship with the other clans and their own relationship with the Code.
It’s important to note that most real live feral cats don’t do much fighting and would rather hiss and posture instead, but since your would doesn’t have much realism, I’d say its fine that they pick fights. Over time, I’d guess the other clans would start of fear them, or at least be wary of them. They might be a good clan to have a villain reside in.
The one thing I do question is the lack of medicine cats. Because you have all these cats fighting, they’re probably getting hurt often as well. There might be less medicine cats but I’d think their role is highly respected, since they’re the ones taking care of the inured cats and keeping the clan fighting well.
MoorClan sits between GladeClan and MarshClan. they pride themselves on how strictly they enforce the Code of Light and how close they are to the sky. they are very fast and have extremely good endurance their main source of food is rabbits. they hunt during the day but patrol and train at night to avoid heat exhaustion (due to there being little to no shade on their territory).
these cats look down upon GladeClan, though they still maintain an okay relationship with them. they consider SwampClan and ForestClan their enemies because of how their territories are so separated from the sky. they consider it to be bad luck to enter either of their territories, as SkyClan cannot watch over them there.
cats can be exiled or executed for breaking the Code in this Clan, giving them the reputation of being unforgiving and even cruel at times.
They seem very interesting, I quite like how spiritual they are, and how this affects their reputation and way of living! I feel they would have a sort of hive mindset, or be extremely closed off at gatherings, just taking a few moments to shared news and prey then leaving. They might also have lots of myths and legends around their clan and how the SkyClan cats have blessed them.
SwampClan is set between MarshClan and CreekClan. these cats are extraordinary swimmers and are well known for being stealthy even in the water. they are less active than the other clans because they put more emphasis on their home life than on their borders, especially since the other clans couldn’t survive in their territory. they usually hunt during the day when lizards are more abundant, but patrol and train at any given time.
these cats aren’t as strict as the other Clans, even less so than ForestClan. they believe in kindness and family before anything else. they are great storytellers and have many legends that they believe in. though, they are known for making stories to scare off the other Clans (such as ghost stories or stories of monsters in the swamp). they can be very superstitious.
this is also the only Clan that breaks the Code by allowing the Clan to choose the deputy rather than the leader. if the majority of the Clan is displeased with their leader, they can exile said leader or force them to retire.
I’ve only ever heard of one other swamp based clan, and I really like the idea. They also seem well suited to the territory. It’d be interesting to see how their relationship with MarshClan works, since they probably have similar territories but very different opinions/views on everything.
Since they don’t totatlly obey the code and are rather relaxed, do the other clans not really like them or treat them kind of like outsiders? Why do they let the Clan choose the deputy (a choice that makes a lot of sense actually)? They also seem like they’d get along with GladeClan, both being peaceful and valueing family.
I enjoyed reading about your Clans, and hope to read more on your new blog! Thank you for letting me do this, and I hope it helps you!
again thank you so much for your input and questions! I’m sorry these both ended up being so long but I have been working really hard on this concept. its the product of more than eight years of world-building, all of my past worlds evolved into this one. this one is (hopefully) my final product! you don’t have to respond, I just wanted to clear up the questions you asked and some misconceptions that are due to my poor wording/lack of explanation!
1. the Clans do live around the Barrens, it’s a rocky terrain that is slightly raised above the other territories (which can cause it to be used for refuge when it floods).
there is a lot of lore around it, most notably that the entire Valley was once one large forest that the residents fought over for years. the Moon and Sun raised the Barrens and turned it into a rockland to declare it as neutral ground that they could always watch over and then turned the rest of the forest into the territories they now are so that the Clans would be confined to their spaces. they also believe that the Sun and Moon separated them intentionally and respect that so there are few battles to take over territory.
the Clans believe that the Barrens are neutral and will not contest loners who stay there, but there isn’t enough prey for any larger groups to stay for long periods of time. rogues in my story travel in Gangs or live in Colonies in the Mountains, so they don’t see many in the Barrens (though they have tried to fight to take Clan territory before).
Gatherings are handled differently, yes. the Valley is so large it takes almost a full day to get to the Gathering place. so the day before, the night of, and the day after are all under the truce. all of the cats who are able/willing to travel come, though the older elders usually stay behind with the younger kits (mothers only take care of kits for the first moon, then go back to their warrior duties, the rank of queen doesn’t exist they just get a maternity leave. the elders are in charge of raising the kits and preparing them to become apprentices by teaching them the Code and the history of the Clan and what have you). it is purely a social meeting, the leaders only announce if there are any dangers like a group of rogues or a fox or whatever. they can playfight to show off their skills but they can’t actually fight each other.
the schedule is basically leave the first morning, get to the Gathering place late afternoon, sleep til dusk, talk with the other Clans til sunrise, sleep til noon, spend the rest of the that day going home. they bring prey with them to eat.
its like this because it follows the legend of how SkyClan runs, for those two days and one night every month they experience the peace they would in SkyClan. they travel under the protection of the Sun and share tongues under the protection of the Moon.
2. they do ask for blessings and give offerings to the Sun and Moon, but not the ancestors who make up the rest of SkyClan. they may ask for guidance but mostly they worship the two Gods who run SkyClan and learn from the teachings their ancestors left behind. SkyClan is more akin to Heaven and the Moon/Sun rule over it, so the ancestors in SkyClan are revered but not worshipped. they just say SkyClan to regard to the Moon and Sun together, not to actually include their ancestors unless it is a story about the whole of SkyClan.
3. I had the Code written down but my phone ate it so I’m rewriting it (but I have most of it memorized). and yes apprentices are required to memorize it before becoming warriors, loners who are joining the Clan are expected to memorize it before they are given a Clan name at all as a way to prove they are dedicated to becoming a Clan cat.
4. the medicine cats do hunt when they have time, but are usually left out of conflict. it is seen as inappropriate to attack a medicine cat because they are not really taught to defend themselves (except in MarshClan). it would be like attacking a young apprentice, really, like you can but you just shouldn’t. one or two are brought to battles to act as medics for serious injuries but stay out of the fighting.
all medicine cats are trained for each type of healing (physical, mental, injury vs. sickness) but they do tend to specialize. so there is a main cat who handles diseases but the others can still do it if the specialist is busy or somewhere else if that makes sense. and though the medicine cat apprentices are assigned specific mentors every medicine cat takes a part in training them (unlike warriors. warriors are usually trained by their mentor only. though any -flower warrior will take them every so often to assess them for their leader).
5. they do use different types of mud for different things! gray/brown is used for camouflage, red is used for ceremonies/Gatherings, and they mix other things (berries, blood, etc.) into mud to make it black for mourning/praying purposes.
they also do hunt other prey, yes! I didn’t mean to make it sound like they only ate fish it is just that they mainly eat fish (except during winter aka Snow-Sky). their creeks are actually more like small rivers or streams now that you mention it but they are more shallow and slow moving, where I am from we call those types of rivers creeks.
they aren’t actually that peaceful, they are very territorial and will not hesitate to attack first when they feel threatened. but they put a very heavy value on resourcefulness and think it is disgraceful to ask for help, so when other Clans ask for help (especially over battles that don’t involve CreekClan) CreekClan looks down on them.
they put a lot of emphasis on ranking because it is dictated in the Code that it is a hierarchy and they are very uptight about appearances. they put so much value on it because they do not want to seem unlawful. they value resourcefulness, not individuality. they separate their cats more intensely based on rank (i.e. its frowned upon for a warrior and apprentice to be good friends because they are of different social standings).
6. I would say they are heat sensitive, yes, which might mean going to Gatherings is harder for them because there are no trees in the Barrens.
ForestClan is more laid back, but not as much as SwampClan. they still keep up appearances of being strict to the other Clans but in their home they are more lenient.
and yes SkyClan gave them the Code. the cats of the lands had always worshipped the Gods, but the Gods sent visions to them to begin the Clans and then changed the territory to stop the bickering over land and force them into their respective Clans. the first cats to join the Sun and Moon (the first official Clan cats) came to the leaders of the newly founded Clans to tell them of SkyClan and give them the Code of Light so that way they could join the Sun and Moon instead of being sent to the Void to wander eternally. there are no legends of SkyClan ever interacting at all after that though, only warnings about the cats who didn’t listen to their ancestors’ Code (and had great misfortune brought upon them because of it).
6. I love GladeClan too actually they are my second favorite (SwampClan is my baby). GladeClan cats are my little hippy babies.
they do have rodents/rabbits to hunt in Snow-Sky, but it is harder on them than any other Clan. they do share a border with MoorClan so they do have a good enough supply of rabbits in their territory to make it through Snow-Sky, but they will ask their neighbors (ForestClan and MoorClan) for help if they need it. it isn’t that birds are their only source of food its just their main source! I have a bad habit of making MoorClan/GladeClan/CreekClan sound like they only have one type of prey haha but they have more.
they are both the most well-liked and most looked-down-on Clan. most Clans think they’re stupid or that they’re too soft, but it is an easy alliance and would also make them look like a jerk if they were rude/aggressive towards them (most Clans are very conscious of appearances). they are pacifists and see violence as an absolute last resort, they will punish members extremely for killing cats even though the Code only forbids killing kits.
and actually they don’t have very many story-tellers! surprising given their laidback nature, but its because GladeClan likes to live in the here and now. they are almost hedonists, in that regard. the only real formal “celebration” they have is the Gathering because they believe every day is a blessing and should be celebrated like a holiday would be. they are one of the only Clans who allow apprentices to become mates (though not to have kits for health reasons and only with other apprentices or young warriors). most other Clans don’t let apprentices date because it distracts from their studies, SwampClan allows dating under the same rules as GladeClan though. SwampClan and GladeClan are also really the only Clans who allow their cats to be openly polyamorous or gay/bi/pan/ace, ForestClan allows it but it has to be kept secret.
7. MarshClan are actually the most accepting of cats with disabilities. where the other Clans might go too easy on a blind cat (not give them as many duties/patrols) MarshClan would train them to their full potential. they believe that the Moon and Sun gave that cat their disability as a hardship for them to overcome so they work extra hard to make those cats just as “useful” as abled cats. cats who are small are expected to work just as hard as large cats, though they may not be strong enough to challenge the leader they are still hardworking and provide for their clan and that is what matters.
when I said Survival of the Fittest mentality I meant that they do not ceremoniously mourn those who die. they do not look down on the dead they just accept that death is a consequence of not being strong enough to live. those who are lazy and do not try their hardest to provide are cast out. elders don’t get kicked out because they work hard to train/watch kits and medicine cats are expected to hunt and fight like warriors. I’ll get to that in a second.
I do stray a lot from actual cat behavior in the Clans, I humanize them a great deal because I’ve actually created an entirely different planet for them. there are species like elves and dwarves and phoenixes but they do not frequent this Valley they live mainly beyond the mountains in cities and kingdoms. on the note of phoenixes existing, Phoenix- is considered a cursed prefix and other mythical creatures are too unreliably colored to create prefixes (i.e. all griffins look different, like with horses and dogs).
but this is actually where one of the main protagonists comes from. I can see how they would be villainous at first glance but most of the villains in Clan history come from MoorClan, CreekClan, and rogue Gangs/Colonies. the other Clans do fear them because of their violent lifestyle but treat them with respect. they are also one of the only Clans that will take in rogues (as rogues in this world are usually more violent and therefore untrustworthy to the other Clans).
onto medicine cats. there are less medicine cats because medicine is a last resort. they won’t go unless they think a wound is getting infected or won’t heal without cobwebs. it is actually seen as disgraceful to have scars/injuries from other cats because that means you were bad enough for your opponent to leave a mark (it is not disgraceful when from opponents like dogs, foxes, etc. that are bigger than cats). all cats who would fit the suffix -claw are almost scarless because that is the level of skill it takes to earn that title (though they use -strike instead because they believe the other Clans have disgraced the suffix -claw by giving it to unworthy cats). but if a medicine cat is not actively treating a patient or sorting herbs they are out hunting or drilling their apprentice(s) because inactivity is not tolerated.
8. yes they are very full of themselves because they believe SkyClan has blessed them but they are actually one of the most social Clans at Gatherings because they want to show how much better off they are under the open skies. they pity ForestClan and SwampClan (who are the most hidden from SkyClan) and will try to test their devotion to the Sun and Moon by asking them about different ceremonies/legends/etc. MoorClan are proud and kind of righteous zealots honestly.
9. they do not get along with MarshClan, MarshClan thinks they’re lazy because they don’t patrol their borders very often. but MarshClan would never invade because of the legend of why the Clans were separated and because they feel like it would make them look weak to need more territory. they fight a lot with MarshClan but never really have to worry about patrolling that border other than for like foxes and rogues.
the other Clans do treat them as outsiders, ESPECIALLY MoorClan. the other Clans all have superstitions about the Swamp and the Clan, though, like that SwampClan medicine cats can know how long you have left to live by looking you in the eye. this is because a lot of Clans think they secretly worship the Void and get dark powers from them. MoorClan has tried to start many wars with them but are very ill-suited to traversing the Swamp let alone fighting in it.
they put a lot of emphasis on the good of the Clan, so if the majority of the Clan doesn’t like the leader they can basically impeach them. they choose the deputy for the same reason, each cat is important so each cat gets a say. they value individuality, family, and freedom and very loosely follow the Code. they actually have different legends than the other Clans about the Sun and Moon, so they only really use the Code for morality purposes and the basic structure of the Clan. they are actually the most culturally rich Clan.
also yes GladeClan and SwampClan have a wonderful relationship. especially since SwampClan cats are pacifists to a lesser extent. they believe that you should practice self-defense at any cost, but that you should be mature enough to handle conflict without actually physically fighting.
I just wanted to say that this is AWESOME.
