The late 1800s were a time where a lot of shanghaiing was going on and the Neath strikes me as a terribly perfect place for that— Shanghaiing was the practice of just, abducting people to force them to be sailors, it happened a lot in the USA and England. They needed sailors and, well, you take a drunk guy out to sea and he doesn't have any choice but work or die.

The Neath offers a concerning possibility where a Surface sailor could abduct sailors, pass them off to a Neathly partner, and kill those who had been shanghai'd— trapping them not only in service at zee, but also eternally to the Neath... Imagine waking up after a drunken night to learn you were taken to the underworld, killed, and now had to zail on a zee of monsters with no hope of ever returning home.

i believe, deep down, betty has always seen herself as neither man nor woman.

when i wrote the letters fic, i had gorana joke to betty in a letter that maybe her disgused identity 'bartholomew' will eventually fit her. in a letter that follows, betty wrote:

I couldn’t tell my Christian name to the boys there, however. [...] So, an ill-fitting Bartholomew it was, just like my shirts with two long sleeves.

What was the motive for selling Neath York to the bats?

So the funny answer for this (and definitely part of it) is Fast and Free Busses.

But there's always more going on with any Proceedings for any sale of a city to the Masters, of course. And with the man himself seemingly missing in action (though surely you just saw him at the bodega around the corner, picking up ice cream), it'd hard to know what exactly was written in the Proceedings for Neath York.

Did he want an escape for his beloved city, from everything on the Surface? Was the never-ending tourist season just too much? (How much more terrifying will Santa Con be, now, with Mr. Sacks?) Maybe he wanted to strike a larger blow in sending Sir Dow Jones to its grave: if you saw a different future for this world, however strange, would you grasp it?

Perhaps it wasn't the mayor alone making the deal, and perhaps the Fingerkings had the ears of the Masters, this time around. Is a cell phone a mirror? An escape? Why do the glittering windows of the city reflect more skyscrapers than can be seen on its horizon line?

Regardless, it could have been a bid for power, as many of the previous Cities' Proceedings had been. Or (and perhaps it is, still, a bid for power in its own way) it could have been a means by which the dire course of history might be altered - an effect which could not be achieved by any other means. As for the Masters? Well, we know what the Bazaar wants, and Neath York has it in spades.
