Mother’s Day - One woman’s initiative that turned into a worldwide celebration
Before the Second Sunday of May was declared Mother’s Day, various women’s peace groups made several attempts to establish holidays and activities to promote peace by inviting moms of fallen soldiers during the American Civil War. In the year 1868, Ann Jarvis reunited families separated during the Civil War promoting friendship. She previously worked to provide sanitation and health for the encampments during the typhoid outbreak and wanted to expand these as an annual memorial. She would remain committed to this project until her death in May 9, 1905.
Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann, kept the legacy by honoring her mother during the anniversary of her mother’s death. Two years later, in May 12, 1907, the Sunday nearest the death anniversary of Ann Jarvis, a small service was held in a local church to honor her achievements. The following year, on May 10, 1908, the church service was the first “official” one to honor this celebration. The following years, other cities and states followed suit. Anna kept advocating that this should be observed not only in the United States but also in other countries. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson enacted that The Second Sunday of May is Mother’s Day. Anna intended this celebration to be celebrated simply but it was commercialized, making her resent the initiative she made. The Second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day is now observed in almost 100 countries worldwide and other nations have their own date to commemorate Mother’s Day as well.
These days, whenever Mother’s Day is about to come, people would look for the best presents for their moms like clothes, watches, cakes, flowers, cards, dining out with discounts, enjoying shopping at a discount or perform activities that would honor moms as well. What matters most is the motive or the heart in celebrating Mother’s Day. Whether it’s the Second Sunday of May or any other day of the year, take time to remember your moms for the legacy that they wanted to leave for generations. Moms are truly heroes in their respective families as well as the sociey as a whole.
In the midst of global COVID-19 pandemic, farmers in the United States have nowhere to sell or give away their produce. They would resort to discarding their crops or resources like milk. Ditching tons of produce could translate into millions of dollars in losses. Thanks to a group of college students who thouht of rescuing the produce from being discarded and distributing them to the food banks. With the support of various donors contributing funds to transport crops to vaious states, millions would have meals on their plates, especially the poorest of the poor and those who lost their jobs.
This initiative is a wake-up call for everyone, including me, to stop food waste if possible. By putting food into good use, we can help #fightworldhunger. May all countries of this world be inspired by this movement.

As the world faces one of the greatest pandemics in modern history, please take time to put yourselves in the shoes of those working in the medical frontlines. Those attending to the most appaling medical cases require utmost care. They need to be responsive or alert at all times. They can’t make excuses by saying “I don’t know”, “I have no time” or “I’ll do it some other time; time is not of the essence”. This preview shows a clear example on how the COVID-19 cases are handled in a hospital in Bronx, a New York City borough. May the following video serve as an inspiration to those working in the medical field across the globe. Kudos to them!

What do you call a peson who thinks, acts and speaks consistently with his/her thoughts and beliefs wherever he/she goes and regardless of circumstances? This is a person of integrity.
For instance, if parents want to teach their child to demonstarte a good moral character at home or elsewhere, they would do their best to instill good habits to him/her at all times. On the other hand, if the child misbehaves and parents rebuke the child on his/her wrong actions, yet he/she whines but they give in by giving rewards like sweets, think twice. If parents think that whining is okay for their child and praises the habit, he/she would think that whining is a good and it’s okay to do this in front of other people. However, the parents should face the consequences for allowing their kid to whine. If the thoughts don’t match with the values of a person, this lacks integrity. Does it make sense?
