But also this is the guy who's often portrayed in fics to be overly aggressive and violent when in reality that's probably just a stress response. I'm writing the Simon that delicately held the seed pendant, that apologized multiple times for accidentally hurting people with the radiation camera. So it's no surprise that it feels ooc

(This is not a jab at writers who write him like that, I just feel like we don't explore enough of other parts of his personality. Yea he gets violent but even the best dog will bite if scared enough)

Grace doesnt lay eyes on Simon until about 1250 words in, they don't properly speak to each other until nearly 1600 words.

But more importantly, he cries for the first time at approximately 470 ish words

Like iirc all of them got appendectomies (if they hadn't already) just so that they didn't have to worry about the possibility of appendicitis right? So Stratt in her ever extreme logic way going "no uterus means no chance of pregnancy in space and don't need to waste space on menstrual products or birth controls"

Cause they were preparing for this mission for a couple years I think yea? And laparoscopic hysterectomies don't have very long recovering times (speaking from personal experience), especially since they're both healthy and young. 1 month of non physical training out of 2 years is nothing

this does bring up the question of PLOT

I made a post a while ago about how dave being used in bloodymary splices and so i have TWO ideas for plot so pls just hear me out on these (idea 1 and idea 2)

Idea 1: It is Dave

okay, so basically Dave IS the backup engineer, and he died in the explosion. now you're probably wondering, "oh, chopsticks, does this mean you ship dave and ryland? cause they had a looot of tension in the trailer"

well my good sock puppet friend im getting to it

i, PERSONALLY, dont ship them. im a bloodymary og, sue me. HOWEVER, in this au, they definitely would've had some kind of tension, or maybe a one night stand, or something of the sort. does this mean theyre endgame? no

obviously, ryland mourned him, even just as a friend. but once he was sent up, and he meets simon, hes also obviously like "weird why is this guy triggering so many memories? what's going on?" but then he and SIMON start getting together and THEY'RE endgame but eventually ryland gets all his memories back and just kind of brings it up on erid like "haha yeah there was this guy on earth that i had a one night stand with and he kinda looks like you"

simon is befuddled. duh. but eventually they head back to earth (maybe not stay there, if the eridians have the travel for it. idk i read a wormhole fic once), and they visit dave's grave. ryland cries a little, cause duh he was his friend. and simon feels a sort of connection to this dead guy, cause they both cared for grace.

this next part is a little of a stretch, but hear me out cause i love end of the world triplets

yeah so simon just kinda splits in front of dave's grave and then BOOM its dave. if anyone wants to try and sort out that with mutations and shit go ahead, i dont have the mindspace right now. but yes, simon splits and now we have the twins :)

Idea 2: It is Simon

and there you go wondering again, "chopsticks how would that work? in the trailer he died!"

the answer is simple my friend who probably isnt wondering these things,

thats right maybe raised-in-a-cult simon prayed before he died (maybe he realized the mistake like a couple seconds before it actually happened) and then the whatever-the-hell in iron lung heard his "i just wanna live" and threw him up in the weird tin can in space

BUT, he gets sent a few years before ryland actually wakes up. so he has all the time he needs to 1, let his hair grow out, 2, go a little bit crazy. he remembers grace, its like all he can remember. so when he finally sees the hail mary (he recognizes it immediately he damn near BUILT it after all) he cries immediately, and even more when he realizes ryland doesnt remember him

so as time goes on, simon never tells him his name. whenever ryland asks, he just kind of smiles wistfully and goes "ill let you remember it"

and then BOOM he remembers and has the whole "simon..?" "you remembered" crying hug kiss blah blah blah (cause the sexual tension on earth still happened you can take it from my cold dead hands)

yup and then they go to erid and they live happily ever after and maybe go to earth and see simon's not-grave but no mitosis this time its just kinda funny and simon would make so many jokes about how hes 'dead' cause ahaha. hes. hes so funny right.

the decision to have james ortiz as the newscaster in the beginning of the movie was so CHOICE i'm chewing on it so hard like that's the very first human voice we hear in the movie that isn't grace's - and it's the first voice that grace remembers. it's not that far of a leap to assume that the newscaster IS the same guy from the voice bank like that's not a crazy thing to assume at all which would mean
