My Halloween adventure in New Orleans
The Rise Haunted House- Part 2
Part 2 of our Rise Haunted House review. In the first part we discussed the zombie paintball attraction. This time we will be talking about the signature Rise Haunted House. First off, the exterior of the attraction is impressive. It is a large warehouse modeled to look like a large, creepy house. The line out front snakes back and forth like any other haunt but the Rise has the added mini escape rooms built into the front of the warehouse. This gives visitors a chance to get a taste of their escape rooms. There are 3 themed rooms to choose from. The line wait was comfortable. There was a performer walking around with what appeared to be a large, albino rat. She traveled up and down the line giving customers a chance to see the rat up close. It was also entertaining to see the faces people would make when emerging from the mini escape rooms. As you get to the last stretch of the line you enter into the warehouse which is decorated like the inside of a haunted mansion. It is quite impressive. There are many photo opportunities for you and your group to take advantage of. Now for me this part is probably the coolest part of the haunt, they allow your group and your group only to enter. Some haunts set a number for how many people are allowed to enter the haunt which means you can be grouped up with another party of people. Not at the Rise!! If you have only a group of 2 people, then only you 2 go in. This makes the experience soooo much better. Now as always with my reviews I do not give specific details. However, I will say that it is a very well done multi-themed house. They have a bunch of jump scares and chases. The actors come uncomfortably close to you as well to add to the creep factor. Ok, I literally just decided to break my rule a little. I have to talk about one specific detail. The haunt has a section that simulates an outdoor graveyard. Hands down it is one of the best graveyards in a haunt that I have visited. They nailed the atmosphere which is an area other haunts fail with. It was definitely my favorite part of the haunt. The Rise Haunted House was an intense haunt start to finish. Everyone is constantly looking over their shoulder and around every corner as they travel through the haunt. That is because it is that good at surprising you. You definitely need to add this haunt to your bucket list and make the drive to Tickfaw, LA.
Nestled away in Tickfaw, Louisiana lies a hidden gem. The Rise Haunted House. This venue exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. They have 3 attractions on site: The Rise, The Asylum, and Zombie Paintball. I decided to break the review down in 3 parts. Part 1 we will talk about the Zombie Paintball attraction.
First things first, make sure you plan around the weather because this is an outdoor attraction(we almost got rained on). We arrived early and was able to get in towards the front of the line. As you wait in line there is a guy dressed in full military gear with an AR-15 (I am pretty sure it was a legit UNLOADED rifle, I did not get a chance to look too closely). The military aspect gives you the idea that the military is there to control the zombie outbreak. It felt a little resident evil-ish to me personally, it probably did not help that the military figure had a patch that resembled the Umbrella Corporation. After waiting your turn in line you get passed through to a staging area that holds about 28 people. One side of the staging area is marked as “upper level” and the other “lower level.” These sides designate where you will be on the trailer. In this staging area the military figure barks out the rules to the attraction like a drill sergeant. Kids be warned, if you do not listen to this guy he will make it known he is not happy. He opens the gate and allows the lower level to load up and then the upper level (I chose upper level). The trailer is a double decker steel platform with all the guns mounted to the right hand side of it. The guns they use are all Tippman 98′s and BT-4′s that are remote charged through a piping system, for you paintball saavy readers’ information. Once on board you are again instructed by another military figure that explains you are only to fire your weapon when the flood lights attached to the trailer go dark. When the lights come on you are to cease fire. SImple rules right? Yeah most of the kids on board were too excited to pay attention. You start off with 80 paintball rounds. There will be 2 reload stops throughout the adventure where you can pay $5 to reload your gun with 80 more paintballs. I am an experienced paintball player so I made my initial 80 rounds last the entire run, one shot, one kill mentality. Now as far as the details during the adventure goes, well you will have to visit them to find out for yourself. I will tell you though, that it is super fun. I mean c’mon, how often do you get to shoot zombies outside of a video game?! You could tell everyone on the trailer was just as excited. Every time a zombie emerged, the trailer would be drowned by the sound of about 28 paintball guns rapid firing followed by the sight of lime green paintballs spraying into the dark at them. It was epic. The whole experience lasted about 15-20 minutes as you travel through the woods finding little buildings that have zombies inhabiting them. This experience is unique to most haunts and should be experienced by all. Find your way to the Rise Haunted House Zombie Paintball attraction and try to escape the zombie outbreak alive!
Check back for Part 2!
The Rise was an epic visit and I have decided to make it a 3 part review to do it justice.
The 13th Floor - San Antonio
I made the long, eight hour trip from New Orleans to San Antonio to visit the 13th Floor. The 13th Floor is one of many throughout the U.S. You will find this haunt sitting in downtown San Antonio. You are welcomed to the massive warehouse by food and merchandise trailers before you enter the gates. Once you enter you have the opportunity for a photo with one of the attractions ghouls before moving into the line. Fortunately, my group made it early in the night and the line was fairly short. We spent around an hour in line but we were constantly entertained by the wandering actors that traveled up and down the long line tormenting customers. Now, I have been through quite a few haunt lines in my time and seen many wandering performers, but this group of actors were top notch. Despite constant attempts by people in line, the actors NEVER broke character but interacted with their actions accordingly. It made the wait much more pleasant to watch the 13th Floor werewolf and zombie chase customers up and down the lines. As always I never spill the specific details inside the haunt, you have to visit and see for yourself. I will tell you, it was worth the eight hour drive. The haunt took about 20 minutes to complete once inside. The rooms and props were top notch in the world of haunts. There were many jump scares to be had and many great costumes and makeups on the performers. If I were to give it a comparison, I would say it felt a bit like the original House of Shock. It had multi-themes and an array of creatures, spirits, demons, and ghouls. The 13th Floor definitely makes my top 10 haunts list.
House of Shock 2017, Final Season??
In keeping with my Halloween tradition, I made it to the House of Shock. This year’s theme house was “House of Wax.” For those that do not know, the House of Shock is actually 3 haunts in 1. The first house is the themed house “House of Wax.” This house is in honor of the old house of wax on Conti Street in New Orleans. The second house is a 3D experience. In this house you get blasted with color, noise, and obviously the 3D effects. Finally, the third house is the original House of Shock. This is a multi-themed scare trap. If you haven’t made it to the House of Shock in its 25 year history, you might be too late. The House of Shock has announced that this season would be its final season. Yes we heard that before 2 years ago, but that was due to insufficient funding which a local investor ended up paying for in order for the house to live again. This time, it sounds more for real though. Ross Karpelman (one of the owners of House of Shock) hinted in an interview with nola.com that “ a Halloween attraction under other management could operate the site in the future under a different name.” This statement corroborates a rumor I heard through my travels that the owners of the 13th Floor in San Antonio (I visited this house this Halloween season, a review is coming) were purchasing the House of Shock. So I say again, if you missed the House of Shock yet again this season, you may have truly missed out for good.
