At the sound of knocking, Edmund abruptly stopped crying. The voice outside the door was unfamiliar to him, but there were many beings that lived and served in Cair Paravel so it was not unreasonable for him not to know. Clearing his throat and wiping at his eyes, he strode to the door and opened it slowly. There was a woman there, tall and tan, and Edmund did not know her. This was enough to make him uneasy, having tricked by a kind word as a child. Still, first impressions could be deceiving and if she was here, she must at least have a good character. Not just anyone could work in the castle. 

“Thank you for your concern. I’d like some wine please, whatever we have that’s already open. I don’t wish to be stuck with a whole bottle. Drinking like that leads to even more maudlin thoughts and I have no wish to become more depressed. Also, some bread and jam.  Again, whatever we have is perfectly fine.” He said after a moment of careful thought. The wine would ease his head and fade his memories and the bread would fill his stomach after the ache of crying.

“Of course, Your Highness,” Circe replied, with a nod of her head. Her least favorite thing about working in this place was that she was a servant. She was used to leading and commanding people, but now here she was, waiting on the hand and foot of King Edmund. It made her feel sick to her stomach, but she kept a smile on her face as she looked at him. “I’ll return very quickly, I promise.” She turned around and left to go to the kitchens and grab the items he requested. She placed them in a basket to make it easier for her to carry, and added in some little desserts in case he changed his mind and wanted something sweet.

As she returned, she knocked on his door again. “Your Highness, it’s me, and I’ve got some beautiful wine and food!” she announced. As the door reopened, she smiled widely at him. “As requested, I brought everything for you along with some chocolates since I know they always help me feel better whenever I am upset.”

It didn’t matter than England was a country surrounded by water.  Susan had never spent much time in it or even on it and she would never have had any interest in it if it weren’t for meeting him.  “No, I’ll accompany you.”  This would be a good time for the two of them to get to know one another better and away from the eye of the castle.  She would not have him thinking that she was a woman who was bothered by something as simple as sailing.  “I’ll be ready in one hour.” she told him before turning and running off to her room.  Her clothes still needed to be packed.  Her weapons still needed to be gathered and inspected.  She would see him again on the docks.

“Alright, if you insist,” Caspian teased. He was glad that she was going to come with him, but he still couldn’t stop himself from joking with her. He only hoped that she would be fine sailing with him and that she wouldn’t get seasick or anything. That was probably the last thing he wanted to deal with. However, it would be nice to have her around so he could spend more time with her. “I’ll be here, waiting on you. I’ll let the sailors know that we’re waiting for about an hour or so until you get back. Don’t be late or else we may be gone,” he told her. Caspian watched as she walked away from him, a goofy smile on his face, and then turned around once she was no longer in sight and headed to the docks to instruct the people waiting for him that she’d be joining them.

He was infuriatingly calm about the whole thing which only annoyed her further.  She wanted to slap that smug grin off his face.  It was true that Susan was much better on horseback than she would ever be on a boat and she had never shown much interest in sailing before.  The sudden change for it now had nothing to do with the fact that she had heard whispers about how boring she was from the ladies around the castle.  “Yes I would.  The fresh… sea air would be good.”  As if the castle had suddenly turned into London overnight and was choked by smog.  “I can get changed into something more appropriate.” she said with a determined expression on her face.

“Right, of course. The fresh sea air,” Caspain said teasingly. Part of him wanted to keep teasing her about the sea, but he wasn’t entirely convinced that she wanted to come along with him. He knew many people weren’t cut out for being stuck on the water for long times. It wasn’t necessarily seasickness that he was thinking about. Many people went crazy from the emptiness and nothing over the horizon and couldn’t handle it. “Yes, go change. I’ll let you come along with me. It will be fun, I promise. I’ll take excellent care of you on my ship,” he replied. “But, before you go change, are you certain you want to come with me? On the sea? If you’d prefer something else, I’m sure I could change my plans around.”

It had only been a few years in the lifetime of the humans that he had begun assuming his new form.  Most of the humans who had known him as a lion had taken to the change well while some others had been hesitant to accept him this way.  He had wanted to change because outside of Narnia, it made it easier to blend in with people as a lion walking down the streets of London was likely to raise more than a few eyebrows.

This body may not move as fast or impose as much terror, but he found that it had some benefits.  The looks from the females and even some males did not count.  It was the ease with which he could move.  Aslan was smaller and more lithe now.  He could hug people and dance with them.  Now as he moved through the halls of the castle, he spun on his feet to enjoy the movement and found himself crashing into someone.  “My apologies.” he told them with a bow of his head before smiling down at them.

Caspian turned around the corner of the halls as he headed toward his chambers when someone completely crashed into him. He gasped a little, not expecting something like this in the castle, and his mind immediately went to protecting himself when he noticed the long curly hair and he knew exactly who it was. His nerves calmed down almost immediately. He had gotten used to Aslan’s human form, but was still finding himself careful around him. He could remember when he first saw the lion and had felt absolutely terrified. “No worries,” Caspain said with a smile. “You just startled me. I’m glad it seems you are enjoying yourself here.”

❝hi cas,❞ lucy hummed, smiling although her eyes stayed shut. she was always, strangely, at her most relaxed around caspian. perhaps it was because he had the same restless spirit that she did. or perhaps it was because unlike her siblings and cousin, he never expected her to be a certain way. lucy slowly opened her eyes, blinking against the bright sun, and looked over to the other narnian royal. 

❝getting a bit restless, are we? how soon until you leave again?❞ more and more often lately, lucy found herself wanting to just… jump onto caspian’s ship at the last minute and sail away for awhile. she was even getting good at sailing, given that caspian had provided her a lesson or two when he was back. but she never went with him. although she was the queen with perhaps the least resposibility, lucy was very in touch with the people… and she felt she had to stay.

Caspian always enjoyed Lucy’s company because there was something about her that was so similar to himself that he felt like he could really be himself around her. Of course, he never hid himself from anyone, but Lucy just made him feel more relaxed. He glanced over at her, seeing her eyes were still closed shut, and he grinned a bit wider as he looked away and back to the water. “I’m fairly certain I’m always restless. It’s hard staying in Cair Paravel without going a bit crazy,” Caspian answered with a chuckle. “I believe I’m leaving again in a few weeks. I can’t wait. I want to be back in the open water because it’s so peaceful and good. It’s so different from being here, on land.” 

Simply thinking about getting away made him excited and ready to just leave right then and there. He knew it was a bit of a possibility. Just a short little trip for the day or overnight and then return the next day. He wouldn’t have the crew or supplies to do anything longer. Plus, he wouldn’t want a crew either and would just want to go by himself for a short trip into the water. “You know, if you ever want a vacation away from your palace duties, I can always take you with me. I can promise you that we can make room for you in our next trip. I’m sure some noble wouldn’t mind giving up their cabin for the Queen of Narnia.”

It was strange the way it would happen. Edmund would be walking through the hallways or a marketplace, casting a watchful but friendly eye over his domain. Then, out of the corner of his eye he would see a face and instantly be taken back. In the sparkle of a faun’s eyes he’d see his mother, or the sound of dwarf’s laugh would remind him of his father’s. He’d smell leather polish and be taken back to his father’s study from their house in Finchley. It was jarring and deeply depressing.

Luckily these moments were few and far between. Narnia had a way of making you forget. But when those moments did hit, and he was crushed by the weight of all he’d left behind, the young king would retreat to his rooms and refuse to see anyone. Except for a select few who would understand.

There was a knock at his door and he frowned from his place under his bed linens. “I do not wish to be disturbed. Please leave!” He shouted, his voice hoarse from crying.

Circe carefully walked through the palace halls doing the different chores required of her in her job as a maid. She worked for lower nobles who stayed in Cair Paravel at different times of the year. She hated it, of course, having to pretend to love and care for these humans. However, it allowed her to be closer to the Kings and Queens and know more about what was happening. Plus, there were often gossipy nobles who would tell her different things about politics or the royal family, and she always took careful notes of everything they told her when she returned to her room. 

As she walked, she couldn’t help but hear the sound of crying behind the door to King Edmund’s chambers. Circe paused and looked at the door. She leaned towards it and placed her ear against the door, making sure she did in fact hear crying. It was an unmistakable sound and she immediately knew he was upset about something. She decided this could be a way in - a way for her to become close to one of the nobles. She knew about how the White Witch had been able to use Edmund and become his friend, and Circe hoped that maybe she could use his vulnerabilities. She knocked against the door and heard him shout out his response. “I am so sorry, Your Highness,” Circe said, making sure she sounded concerned. “Is there anything I might be able to do for you? I could bring you something to drink or to eat, if you wish. I know treats can often help... with many things.” She didn’t want to point out that he was crying as she believed it could hurt her motive.

“It was a dare.” His lips were a deep blue, especially in contrast to his stark, pale face. Water dripped slowly from his shaggy hair and clung onto every fabric which covered his large frame. “Actually, no. It was a challenge. You should have seen their faces. As if I am too weak to dive headfirst off of a waterfall. They must have forgotten who I was,” he bellowed, his pride beginning to swell. The rush had been splendid, but it hardly compared to the loud cheers which reached his ears once his head returned to the surface. Also to see the expression of his fellow knight, whose skin tone now matched a burning flame. “And if I do not dive into the water, why would any of knights do the same? They follow me and I lead by example. That way they know if a war were to happen tomorrow, I’d lead them right into battle. I would not be behind them cowering in fear, but in front, with my sword in my hand.” He wrapped the large fur around his shivering body even if the sun shone brightly above. The water was still as crisp as the sea it flowed into. “It was a trust exercise. Had nothing to do with my pride.”

“So, it had absolutely nothing to do with your pride, huh?” Caspian asked with a shake of his head. He highly doubted what Peter was saying because based off everything he had said, it did seem like it had to do with pride. “You may have been trying to show everyone how brave and wonderful and magnificent you are, but there was also a bit of pride in there. You can admit it. I’ve certainly done some idiotic things to show how brave I am and it also had to do with my pride. I’ve admitted it. Your turn.” He chuckled to himself, thinking about all the stupid things he had done on his ships and different ventures. “Now, enough about that, I think we need to get you warmed up before you get sick. I can’t let you get sick,” Caspian said. He leaned down and placed another fur around Peter. He’d seen many people come out of the freezing sea waters before and barely make it through, and the last thing he wanted was for Peter to regret his decision to jump off a waterfall. “First of all, you are going to need to get those wet clothes off. They’re the reason you’re still shivering and icy cold. We’ll get you into something dry and warmer.”

Her hands nearly went up to sit on her hips childishly, but she only just controlled herself and held her hands in front of her.  She knew that she could be relied on to handle things at Cair Paravel for the day, but she didn’t like they had assumed she would be happy to do so.  “That’s not fair.” she said with an annoyed expression, though that was hardly new for the oldest Pevensie.  Her siblings often remarked that her face was now cemented into that expression.  “Maybe I wanted to come with you.”

Caspian grinned as he saw the annoyed expression across her face, and he had to clear his throat to stop himself from grinning. “You’re right, of course,” he replied. “I can see how staying in Cair Paravel can be boring and tiresome. I know I’d certainly go crazy if I was here all the time.” He found himself grinning again as he looked down at her. “If you want to come with me, then come with me. I’m sure we can find someone else to take care of things here or it’ll be fine for just one day. So, do you really want to go sailing for the day? It’s a small ship and the waters are rough today, but we’ll be back by nightfall... hopefully.”

Eustace beamed at her answer since he wanted nothing more than to share his dragon’s magic with the rest of the world. They were practically killed to extinction. Now, more than ever, his duty to the flying lizards was of the upmost importance. He placed his thumbs between his lips and blew a loud whistle. Well, loud according the dragons, but to those who were not family of the beasts, the noise was silent. Communication had been the remnants of the spell which found him while sailing. What he thought was a curse was simply a lesson. One he was ever grateful to learn. The gentles dragon flew down, her wings causing his jacket to flap violently. “Here darlin’,” he cooed, sticking his hand out and waiting for the dragon to close the gap. “Be very careful. They still get startled really easy. Especially around strangers.” With his free hand, he slowly waved Willow towards him. “Alright, now stick our hand out next to mine, and she’ll come. Don’t move fast or Rhia’ll go ballistic.”

Willow watched as he called the dragon down to them and she was completely fascinated by the movements of the beasts. She was excited to see the dragon come closer to her, and she was amazed by how it looked up close. It looked even more beautiful when it was closer to her. Her hair was blowing around as it came closer and closer, and Willow closed her eyes for a few brief seconds, enjoying the feeling of the wind off its wings running through her hair. “Okay,” Willow replied with a quick nod of her head. “I’ll stay very still. I’m pretty good at that.” She went over to Eustace as he waved for her and she stood very close to him, deciding that staying as close as possible to him was the best decision. "Rhia is a beautiful name,” she whispered, not wanting to make too much noise and end up in a dangerous situation. Of course, Willow knew she could simply disappear into leaves if things became too crazy and return to the forest, but she didn’t want to do that at all. She always preferred her human form and she wanted to be able to meet this large, majestic dragon. Willow took a deep breath and held out her hand.

éile couldn’t quite remember a time when she’d used her gifts for anything. her mother had been a dryad, and her father a human, a lord. as such, éile was some kind of half-breed and possessed some… unusual abilities. 

she squinted out into the sky, concentrating as she plucked flower petals from the wind and fluttered them over to her swarm. it once had been very difficult to hold more than one petal in the air at once. now, éile was working on re-shaping the apple blossom petals into a new and unique sort of flower. 

she was so absorbed in her artistry that she didn’t notice anyone approaching. 

It was difficult not to recognize the half breed girl. Many of the dryads knew of her existence and could send her powers and lack of powers. There weren’t many half breeds like her, and Willow was always curious about the girl. She had simply been walking through the forest, humming a song to herself, when she saw the girl focusing on her powers. Willow found herself walking closer to her, fascinated by what she was doing. “Wow,” she said out loud. “That is magnificent.” She was impressed that Élie had abilities like this, and she wanted to know more about what all she could do.

“i might be wrong,” éile replied, sliding easily out from between the trees, “but the eastern sea people have no authority here. on land. in narnia. i’d suggest a polite request next time. i’m sure you’ve never been ordered about in your life, princess, but i assure you that it doesn’t feel very nice.” she was teasing, and that was very plain to see. there was a charming, but sort of smug little grin tugging at the delicate corners of éile’s lips as she stopped a few feet away from the princess. 

“i wasn’t peeping or prying or whatever you wish to call it. i strayed a bit too far from the path.” she figured she ought make it clear that she was neither a threat nor some sort of creep. or a spy. éile was certainly not a spy. she was but a half-nymph; a half-dryad, and a very good friend to queen lucy.

Jezebel rolled her eyes when the other responded. Of course they had no respect for her. She wasn’t exactly wrong though. The Sea People didn’t really have any authority here. Jezebel liked to believe she had some type of power since she’d been invited her by the kings and queens, and she tended to exercise that minimal power whenever she felt the need to. She could still see the other was joking with her, but the idea of not having any power still did not sit well with her. “Very well. I’ll try to be nicer in the future,” she responded. 

“Well, I’m glad you’re not spying on me. It’s not as if you’d learn anything anyway,” she told her. “I don’t think basking in the sun is anything relevant to anyone.” Jezebel didn’t really discuss anything about the Eastern Sea People around anyone here and she kept her mouth shut about their private matters. She only talked with the kings and queens about a few things to do with her people, but that was about all. She had been trained well in being a princess, diplomat, and keeper of secrets. “Path? Were you... walking? I don’t know. I think that’s what land creatures do for fun.” The thought of walking around in a forest sounded absolutely dreadful to her.

They might as well have executed her as an example. Allowed her to burn into a pile of ashes instead of wasting her days trapped inside the palace. Palace being a bit of a stretch seeing she was confined to wherever the court deemed fit. Usually no where near the royal family considering Hasna wanted nothing more than to tear their heads from their moral bodies. She was becoming delirious, talking to herself when the guards remained abnormally still. It was worse than torture. How far the powerful had fallen since the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve sat on the throne. 

She cackled, throwing her head back as the sound ricocheted off of the thick trees. The woman’s tone spoke volumes. More than a century ago, no one would have been able to speak to Hasna in such a way and leave with their tongue. But the gloves which bound her by spell made it impossible to harm another living creature. Yet another form of their unbearable punishment. “You do not demand anything, princess,” she hissed, emerging from the trees. “I know who you are. I was turning wolves into stone before you were a thought in anyone’s mind. I will introduce myself when I please. Though the years must be long if I have to anyways.” 

Jezebel narrowed her eyes as the woman showed herself. She could already see she was an enemy of Narnia because of the gloves she wore. She’d heard all about the war Narnia had faced. Her people had avoided it, deeming it too irrelevant and idiotic for them to become involved. Her father, hundreds of years old, had watched Narnia fall to pieces and had done nothing. Jezebel believed the same as him, and that the problems of Narnia were simply their problems. She might have been young - very young compared to many of the people in her world, but she was already set in her ways and her beliefs. “I demand whatever I please. I can assure the kings and queens of this world would agree that I have my rights as a diplomat here,” she responded. 

She had no idea who this woman was though. Her words resonated somewhat with her though - that she must introduce herself because no one knows her anymore. Jezebel guessed that she must have been important at some point in the past, but now she was just a prisoner. “Forgive me then because I’ve no idea who you are. History has erased your existence as I’m sure the rulers of this world have always wanted.” She slowly stood up from where she was seated. She wasn’t sure what else to say to this strange woman, but she was still curious about her. Curious and young, like her father always joked. “I won’t bother you anymore. I understand people wanting to erase history.”

They’d never harm him – his precious dragons. Nip perhaps, and if they were really irritated, puff smoke in his general direction. But they’d never hurt him. Had you told Eustace back in England that his job would be to tame dragons, he’d instruct one of his goonies to pummel you into the ground for being such a ninny. Yet as his eyes were raised towards the flying beasts, a large grin stretched from ear to ear. He understood dragons as they were simply misunderstood. If ignored, they’d become devils which terrorized whatever crossed their paths. But once shown what their powers can truly do? They protect like none other. 

“Look at them,” he sighed in content. “Bloody amazing to this day. Years have passed and I cannot get over it. Want me to bring one down?”

Willow clapped her hands together when Eustace mentioned bringing a dragon down. She had never been near the creatures before. She tended to stick with her own kind in the forest and hiding in the trees from the world, but Willow was beginning to adventure outside of her realm. Her friends and family always told her she was the crazy, adventurous one and they always suspected she would do great things with her life. However, in her hundreds and thousands of years of living, she had never once been near a dragon. She’d seen them, of course, but only from a distance. She had always been a bit too terrified to go near them, but having Eustace nearby and taking care of the dragons made her feel a bit braver about the situation. “Oh, would you? That would be absolutely wonderful!” she said excitedly. She looked over at Eustace after she spoke and then back up at the sky, watching the beautiful beasts fly around in the sky. “They’re each so beautiful. I’ve decided I love all of them.”

it had been a very long time indeed since narnia had seen any ‘excitement’, as susan called it. while lucy certainly didn’t miss any of the wars, she did miss the excitement of having something happen. narnia was never short of fantastic things and places to explore… but lucy longed to go sailing again. to discover new places and new things. maybe even two sword fight a little. couldn’t there at least be some mildly irritating pirates to vanquish? 

lucy sighed and sunk into the sand, staring out at the ocean. she was getting restless, truly restless, and there was nothing she could do to fix it. and she was grown now… there would be no more suggesting games of hide and seek. lucy closed her eyes and tilted her face to the sun. then she, as she did sometimes, began to create a little story inside her head.

Caspian hated whenever he was stuck on land. He was a seafarer, as many knew, and he enjoyed spending a lot of his time on the open water. Traveling the large world of Narnia excited him as there always seemed to be something new around every corner. At this point, he had seen so much of the world that he never knew existed. He hoped to go on another voyage sometime soon, but was simply waiting on his people to finish their rest and begin working on the next voyage. He always wanted to make sure his people had time to spend with their family at home as it usually took months to voyage around Narnia. Perhaps that was why so many Narnians loved Caspian.

His restlessness brought him to the beach to just be near the ocean water and maybe go out and swim in it. Caspian missed the feeling of the water around him, and he’d ventured off from the palace to be here, at the beach. As he walked along the shore, listening to the crashing of waves and watching the water swirl around his boots, he noticed a familiar figure not too far. Of course Lucy would be near the water. “Well, what a surprise finding you here,” Caspian said as he approached her. “I wouldn’t expect to see you anywhere else.” He sat down next to her, leaning back on his elbows and staring out at the water.

Jezebel never enjoyed coming to Narnia. It was always the last thing she wanted to do. However, her father always expected her to visit the land and discuss treaties with these people. She was stuck here until her father called for her to return to the Eastern Sea. Jezebel was already daydreaming about returning home to her underwater kingdom where one day she would become queen of the Eastern Sea People. She was excited for this day, but instead she was on land with all these strange creatures.

Finding that she missed the water, Jezebel left her small lake cottage to swim in the lake. She quickly found herself swimming along different passes, into rivers and streams and places away from the cottage. She felt at peace even if she was alone in her swim. She wanted to enjoy this moment for as long as she could because soon she’d return to her temporary home and be forced to attend some dinner with the kings and queens of Narnia. She decided to take a short break before returning to the water and pulled herself out onto the shore. She stayed right next to the water with her feet dangling in the water as she laid down on her back and looked up at the sky. The trees were blocking parts of the sky and she found it to be absolutely fascinating. The land near her home had very few trees and whenever she looked up at the sky, there was only the sky. There was never anything blocking the sky. 

As she laid there, she heard the snap of a twig. She ignored it at first, deciding it was probably some animal, when she heard a few more snaps. Jezebel sat up and looked behind her. “Hello? Who goes there?” she asked. “As Princess Jezebel of the Eastern Sea People, I demand you show yourself!”
