After watching the final episode again, it wasn’t as bad as the first time. I guess the shock and disappointment has worn off and I’m in a calmer mood to analyse the ending.

Ji Mong left the palace with parting words to So that Soo may not be of this world.

Then we see the sun covered by the eclipse like Ep 1 when Soo was transported from present time to Goryeo.

We see So standing in the darkened Goryeo recalling what Soo said during their stroll.

Soo: If we had met in another world and another time, I was thinking how great that would have been. Truly, I could freely love you all I wanted.

Then cut to So wiping away the concealer and revealing his scars - symbolises he is giving up his throne and Goryeo life. He has no one left and nothing to look forward to anyway.

So: if we are not from the same world, I will find you, my Soo

Can we assume So himself (I like this better) and not his descendant will cross over to present time in search of Soo?

But of course, they could have added in a brief So-Soo meeting in present time: meeting of eyes across the room or back hug as a simple closure. But no, they have to end like this 😭😭😭

The sheer intensity of emotions on this moment is unreal! It’s the first time Min Hyuk finds the courage to voice all the insecurity he’s been keeping hidden deep inside his heart all this time - that he isn’t in Bong Soon’s heart - while he literally begs her to love him. He’s loved her for too long and too much and only the other day he watched BS talking with GD after which she broke up with him. And it’s only now, when he fully shows how much he’s been hurt - he’s been so unrelenting and brave in his pursue of her, that one often forgets how many times he got indirectly rejected, how many times he watched her open affection for GD,… In a way, MH has reached the end of his rope. He needs all the reassurance BS can give him and when she does, MH tells her the words ‘I love you’ (after he literally admitted to her that he is carrying her in his heart!) There is this heartfelt intimacy about them underscored by the physical closeness and that each words is only a whisper; as if they were sharing a secret no one else but them would know.

It’s so freaking symbolic and poignant when BS places her hand over MH’s heart - THE HEART THAT BEATS FOR HER, THE HEART THAT IS FILLED WITH HER, THE HEART THAT BELONGS TO HER,...

And has there ever been a more heartfelt embrace?! When BS intiates the embrace, she is for the first time openly seeking both physical and emotional comfort from MH, as if he were the only person in the world with whom she wasn’t afraid to be completely vulnerable. And there is the way MH cocoons her in his arms, as if he wanted to fully consume her and hide her in his embrace, protecting her even in his sleep…
