what I keep wondering about the little nightmares universe is how is there even a civilization left if it seems like all the grown people/entities are hostile to any children they come across, and where did those children even originate in a world where everyone is out to kill them. What if that eldritch horror that's influencing everyone is a more recent development in their world? It seems to be feeding off of all the city dwellers so that won't last for long either

actually if i remember right there is some official material that says just that! with little nightmares 1, the maw was said to only surface every so often, showing up in different parts of the world, and its patrons flocked to it to sate their hunger/find respite from the outside world, which means the maw itself is not a constant presence, and seems to capitalize off of periods of disruption.

meanwhile, with little nightmares 2, the Signal which has warped the Pale City was not always present, and from what i’ve read seemed to have just Shown Up one day and began to dissolve and consume people. the city seems to be in a late stage of decay, and people are in varying stages of being consumed by it.

there’s also the mobile game, very little nightmares, which i somewhat remember also implying that the world wasn’t always like this, tho there has always been periods of it being rotten, it sounds more like a cycle, with six being present for what looks to be the worst string of disasters all happening around the same time, and the site seems to say she comes from somewhere that was not like this.
