im sorry but what other anime can like replicate the absolute cinema of death note. the omnious latin chanting. the blatant mental health disorders of every single character. the saucy trombone as ppl drop dead. the swoosh of the pen, hand jerking around, arm fully extended. the fucking helicopter shootouts over literally a notebook. the dark catholic imagery. the typeface. the significance of a single letter. the sexy lesbian goth model with a bubbly personality and undiagnosed bpd. ok. the autistic honor student who has to be god or else he really is a criminal. the autistic detective who immediately solves the mystery and nobody believes him. the dramatic irony of every aspect. the bury ur gays trope. the bury most of the cast. the diabolical laughter of a shinigami with a gay earring and snatched waist with a crippling apple addiction who set up the whole show. random bondage. ok. doomed yuri. doomed yaoi. everyone who uses this book is doomed.

Gong Shangjue is such a fascinating character because despite his narrative importance and influence on every other character we get so little that's actually from him. Almost every bit of characterization we get for him is from somebody else's perspective. You have to piece together the parts of his character based on what the other characters see in him and their relationships to him. Which is especially fun for a character like Gong Shangjue who is always putting on a tough front and disguising so many parts of himself that he finds less productive for protecting his family.

Like! How many scenes do we get from his perspective? How many episodes do we get that have a scene from his perspective? Not just scenes that have him in it, but scenes where his emotional arc is highlighted and prioritized. This is our primary antagonist and I can think of a small handful of scenes like that. Most of the time the character carrying the most emotional weight in the scene is Gong Yuanzhi or Shangguan Qian or Gong Ziyu. So much of how we see his character is filtered through the lens of how those three characters in particular see his character. For Gong Yuanzhi, the older brother who is the source of all his insecurities but also a source of affection and care; for Shangguan Qian the terrifying young master of the Gong family who can decide her life and death; for Gong Ziyu, the scary older brother who stands in his way at every turn. And we have to filter through all of that to find Gong Shangjue's actual character.

Once again I'm battling with Hostile Takeover. Someday, eventually, I'll finish it.

“Behave.” Shangguan Qian shoves her hands into the basin too, fast enough that Yuanzhi doesn't manage to evade her grab for his wrists. Hot salt water sloshes over the rim and to the table and she tsks. “You know it's for your own good,” she softens her voice to something almost pleasant. “I can do this myself, in my own home. Probably with something more effective.” Yuanzhi grumbles but his fingers slowly loosen up again. Shangguan Qian is not easily distracted, though, so she keeps at least a light hold to force his hands underwater. More pressure would be infinitely more satisfying but also defeat the purpose of this exercise. Obtaining such compliance does almost make her wet sleeves worth it. “But here you can keep me company.” She smiles as sweetly as she can just because it never fails to irritate him. “I’ve been terribly bored.”
