If Apple Buys Tidal...
People keep saying that streaming will be a viable source of revenue for musicians when it finally scales up. What no one seems to realize/mention is that Spotify et. al. are also waiting to reach scale, but for drastically different reasons. Their plan will almost certainly be to renegotiate with labels to pay out even less in royalties once they have a stranglehold. Tech experts have long said that streaming services can’t survive and/or thrive unless they start paying out LESS to artists.
The majors won’t care, because they were given equity by the big streaming players in exchange for licensing deals. That means major labels will continue making money, even though they’ll get less in royalties...and pay less to their artists. Independent artists/labels lose out, too, because they’ll either have to fall in line with crappier deals or just say no altogether.
I say all that to say this: If Apple buys Tidal, we’re inching closer to this reality. It doesn’t mean artists should completely avoid streaming services, but it does mean evangelists should stop acting like streaming will eventually save music. There is no “saving music” in this regard. Savvy musicians will still be able to make money if they pay attention and do the work, but the good days are over. Technology will not change that. It’ll only continue to squeeze the people creating the art that’s being exploited for profit.
