[MMD] Get Krunk
WF2014 pre-hype!
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, MESSAGE ME DIRECTLY BY CLICKING THIS TEXT
That's right everybody, it's time once again to put your thinking hats on and go digging through all of your favorite wrestling moves, holds, throws, pins, submissions - because WRESTLEFESTIVAL 2014 is only two and a half weeks away!
We've got a ring, we've got a cage, we've got announce tables, props, a full arena, all kinds of new special effects, and SO much more.
Now I know, you've probably got some questions...and there's nothing more I'd love to do than sit here and answer them forever. BUT - I've still got a ton of work to do. So, I'm gonna leave a basic FAQ and a quick QA with the WF2014 referee to keep you guys clued in.
FAQ:
Q: How many requests can I have?
A: ONE. However, if the event slows down or requests become hard to come by, I'll personally start messaging people and offer them a second request (at random).
Q: What characters can we choose?
A: It's gonna be a case by case basis. Sometimes a model just doesn't work well with another due to size differences, aesthetic juxtaposition, or maybe it's just a poorly rigged. The final call is gonna be up to me, but it doesn't hurt to give me ideas to work with. Lemme know what characters you like, themes (schoolgirl, catgirl, anime related, etc), whatever!
Q: What models are out there?
A: Well...a buttload. There's Touhou, Dream Club, Idolmaster, Vocaloid, Senran Kagura, MLP, Anime related, Videogame ports, etc. Take a look online for MMD models, hell, do a search on DA! You never know what might be out there, and it might just be what you're lookin for!
Q: Are you going to lock moves like you did last year?
A: I freakin' have to. If I don't, then 90% of the requests will be for Muscle/Kinniku Busters, Powerbomb pins, German Suplex pins, or Boston Crabs. Can't be having that, this is a once a year thing - gotta keep it diverse.
Q: But, if the move I wanted has a variant/alternate version, can I request that?
A: Oh, you're sneaky! But yes, if the move you want has been locked, then find a variant of it (hint: Youtube has a metric ton of wrestling move footage). For every German Suplex there's a Dragon/Tiger/Capture/Sunrise variant.
Q: Anything else I should know?
A: Think about the move you're gonna request and then ask yourself this: What's the setup? Is it "in motion", during the "impact" of the move, or the "aftermath"? Each of those variables can help to set the scene or tell a story within a single image. You can always leave it up to me though, if you want. :D
From Raw and Smackdown, to Puroresu and Joshi leages. Indie feds to your favorite manga or anime. It's all fair game as long as it's actually used in pro-wrestling matches.
The more references you send, the easier it's gonna be to pose and stage the shot. The easier it is to do that, the faster the image gets done. The faster that image gets done, the sooner I can work on the next one in my to-do list....and THAT means more images for everyone. So please, don't send me some vague request coupled with little to no information. Google it, youtube it, whatever!
Want one character overcoming the odds to pin two people? How about a TagTeam submission? 2 v 1 top rope acrobatics? I know, it's a tough decision - but that's why this FAQ thing exists a few weeks early, so you can plan your request and put some legit thought into it.
Same goes for the props. There are a ton of options now, so think about it. Tables, ladders, chairs, baseball bats, and a hand...on a stick? Wait, what the hell?
These raucous little devils are courtesy of one of my friends (and MMD colleague) -- JunkoJunkoDance.
Note: Keep in mind that there are a LOT more "guest characters" coming, and they will be announced as soon as I can whip up promo images for them. It's gonna be a wild WF2014 event, that's for sure.
Basically, in motion is for mid move stuff, like "as" it's happening. Impact is for the moment of contact (punches/slams/chairshots/etc). Aftermath is for a pinning hold, when someone either taps out - or is struggling in a submission, or when someone is looking over a downed opponent (or celebrating their victory).

Go out and zap to the extreme!
Yeah, spent this morning modding a Sonic port and a Pikachu port into the TRUE AND HONEST electric hedgehog pokemon, Sonichu.
WF2014 Progress/Updates
Yeah, for those of you craving more joshi/puroresu action there WILL be another Hyper Adorable Ultimate Moe - Wrestlefestival event this year. SO...to prep for that I've been porting/building/modding/frankensteining tons of props and models.
In this post I'll give you guys a show of what has been done so far, and give hints as to what to expect.
The arena:
A mixture of props from TheHorrible-Mu, stuff I've ported over from Google sketchup, random accessory downloads, etc. All texture modded, scaled, and fixed up to create a real 'arena' feel. Quite the difference from an MMA ring and some bright lights w/paper crowds. :)
The ring itself has pose-able ropes, ring apron, mat, and more. So when you request stuff this year - put you're thinking caps on. Tag team throws/pins/submissions, rope tie ups, turnbuckle throws, sneak attacks, it's almost all possible this time around.
The Props:
Cages, Breakable tables, chairs, ring bells, ladders and more are now all viable options for poses/moves in the upcoming event. Some come from TheHorrible-Mu, some from Google Sketchup, etc. Most have been texture/sph/spa modded to better match the arena itself.
The Referee:
No, there's no name for her yet - I just wanted to whip up a bookworm-ish looking moe character to be included within the scenes. Either counting out a pinfall, yelling at someone for interfering, laying the smackdown on someone, or being knocked silly by an errant chairshot - it will not only add levity to each shot, but can also take up 'empty space' in an image, adding depth and liveliness to a request.
The Themes: Last year I had to break up models into themes, and this year may be no different. What IS different is the absolute amount of content I've got to work with. Game rips, mesh mods, and even some special guests from friends and colleagues within the MMD community - the amount of themes to choose from will probably increase by a LARGE margin.
I'm also fairly sure that I'll be using themes to break up the moves/pins/submission types that are available as well. Last year it was predominantly 1on1 affairs, but with the inclusion of all these props and options? Yeah, we're looking at submission, pin, hold, throw, strike, tag team action, referee action, rope attack, turnbuckle attack, top rope, weapon, cage, etc - there is a METRIC SHITLOAD of variables going on. I'm not really sure how I'm going to handle this yet, or if there will be a 'cap' on total requests, but we'll see how it goes. Still have a long ways out - and there's a ton more to work on before it's ready to go.

Let it Fro, and Sports Entertainment Mods
The last two images are thanks to a user on DA who challenged me to turn Elsa and Anna from Frozen into full blown Sports Entertainment-era pro wrestler types.
Let it go, Valentine's Day and The Red Pyramid
Now that I've figured out advanced lighting, my MMD stuff is gonna start looking like my old GMod stuff. Real shadows, multiple light sources, custom rim lighting, etc. :D
Oh snaps, it's been awhile.
Wrestlefestival fun facts, statistics, and more shit to read
Event timeframe: 30 days
39 requests, 4 alternate angle shots, and 43 total images were created.
Trying to juggle a job, transit, paying bills, and doing this (to the point where the images remained consistent in their quality) was difficult, to say the least. To keep my workflow constant, I would spend weekends posing and staging the shots (roughly 7-9 per weekend) and during the week I would do post production/touchups on the images after work. This way I was able to release at least one image per day (roughly around the same timeframe).
The goal of this event was multi-faceted...
One: I wanted to satiate the bazillions of wrestling/combat related requests I was receiving from people (in numerous countries, Japan being one of the most 'passionate' with their requests) in one fell swoop.I figured that if I made an event out of it, that the requests would die down for awhile, allowing me to concentrate on creating promo images/wallpapers for people without having to be buried under joshi/mma/puroresu related imagery.
Two: I wanted to make sure there weren't any major duplicate poses (ie: I didn't want 30 people all requesting muscle busters) - this would force me to learn new posing tricks and have to use reference material such as images, video, etc to understand how certain holds/attacks would work.
Three: I wanted to find ways to hide, or at the very least not make fan-service/blatant pantyshots the FOCUS of the image. In doing so, I was forced to find new camera angles to show off both models in a way that not only made the actual pose/move the focus of the shot, but could 'tell the story' of the situation (much like a live wrestling event, the actors (so to speak) have to put on the story without help of the announcers) through facial expression, body posture, etc.
Lastly; for those that don't mess with 3d posing programs or understand how much post production/touch-ups go into an image, here's a quick rundown as to what goes into building a pose/scene like the ones showcased in this event:
Find models that match request description (goth, catgirl, fantasy, cheerleader, touhou, etc). Load models. Create rough version of pose to see if models are compatible with each other (body type/aesthetic context/etc). If not, find new models and rebuild rough posing test. If yes, work on posing until happy. Once poses are done, tweak all the small things. Eyes, hair, fingers, clothing, skirts, accessories, etc. Finalize face posing. Load up cage/ring/octagon model. Load two to three instances of paper crowd props, pose accordingly so they create a nice fluid 'group' that mesh well together. Load light wall of appropriate color (the color of the wall should be chosen to counter the primary color being used by the models - just like a color wheel). Adjust standard lighting and rgb color values as needed. Adjust shadows. Remove outlines from characters. Load effects and modify as needed (autoluminous, xdof, ssao, diffusion, additional lights, etc). Readjust standard lighting if needed. Add shaders using MME plugin. Spend like 30 minutes adjusting shaders so that all models look right (can't have the shaders causing models to contrast with each other). Find a camera angle. Fail. Find a new camera angle. Adjust perspective of camera angle. Go back and fix posing to match the perspective needed for the camera angle. Export image as 3840*2160 bmp file.
Open up paint program of choice. Fix EVERYTHING. This usually includes hiding issues with clipping, adding effects (blur, hit sparks, additional lighting, etc), rebuilding faces/jawline/hair/clothing (due to in engine lighting issues, bad rigging, unruly face sliders, or my own mistakes), adding tears/sweat/blush/etc (if the model didn't have options or the options available were subpar), redraw entire body parts if needed, color correction, adding custom bloom, re-painting skintones to match scene/lighting, redrawing shadows, redrawing/adjusting eyeballs, using burn/dodge on hair/skin/clothing to add depth, etc.
Once all that is done, then I save the image and sit on it for awhile. This way I can look at it 'fresh' the next day or so and see if there's anything I missed (in the end, I almost always miss something anyways, lol). At that point it gets tossed in the 'finished' folder and awaits the random draw to get uploaded. This entire process can take up to 5 hours if I'm really into it, but that's only for a simple scene with two characters. The more models you have, the more you have to fix, the more you have to adjust, and the more you have to pose. There were a few images in this event that took so long that I had to put them on hold while working on other requests, as I just couldn't get stuff to look "just right".
Now, all of this might not seem like a big deal without visual examples, so here's something to look at.
Before vs After
Redrew entire pelvis of brunette, redrew lots of clothing/upperbody on blonde character, fixed thighs, fixed underwear, fixed massive clipping issues, fixed skirt on blonde, fixed hair, fixed hair color, added color correction, added bloom, adjusted lighting, vibrance/saturation, repainted brunette's skintone to match lighting/bloom, added depth to brunette's skin tone, etc.
Before #2 vs After #2
Fixed lighting, skintone, face of blonde (skin had details that resembled glitter - but after lighting fix it ended up looking like pockmarks, so I had to paint over it), fixed lower body (rounded her butt), fixed thong, redrew gaps in hair, added blush, added shadows to nostrils/lips/eyelid area, widened pelvis so it would rest on abs of redhead, widened upper body so it matched pelvis, fixed clipping with redheads legs, redrew parts of legs, added metal bikini bottom, fix bikini top so color of certain chain link weren't 'green', made upper back slightly more pronounced/muscular, added muscles to shoulder, fixed clavicle shadow, adjusted bikini strap shadow, made eyeball more vibrant, fixed hair, added color correction, bloom, custom depth of field blur, added additional lighting to make models focus of shot.
So...yeah. Now you know what kind of process I use to make these images. This isn't a post to pat myself on the back either, it's to show you guys that I put this much effort into random free requests from fans because I want you guys to enjoy the end results. I've always worked under the idea that if just one person likes an image I make, then it's worth it - so I try to put everything I can into each image when I do this stuff. :D
Wrestlefestival Round 5
Wrestlefestival 2013 Alternate Angle Shots (aka Perv Cam)
A few of the requests initially had different/alternate angles or posing, before being scrapped in favor of the ones that were considered 'final versions'. This was due to the alternate shot focusing WAY more on fanservice than on the actual move itself (even though fanservice is a result of many of the moves/holds/attacks requested - I tried to keep it as classy as possible with camera positioning).
However, the requestee's were still sent these variants and as such, I'd rather upload them then let the effort/post production/photoshop work go to waste.
