The lights going out didn’t surprise her, it was the hair-raising voice that permeated throughout the Atrium, reminding her far too much of Voldemort’s voice in all of their heads during the battle not even a year ago. It was the bone-chilling, echoing voice that caused panic to seep into her veins, momentarily frazzling her nerves. She was suddenly thrusted back into the Great Hall, the Courtyard, a classroom with the Carrows. All of the memories that bled into her dreams every night seemed to come alive once more, something that rarely happened while she was awake, having not experienced it since the beginning of last term. The flashbacks ended in Tom Riddle’s looking down at her with ghostly smile before roughly shoving her back into the present. Swaying slightly from the rush of memories crashing into her like a tidal wave, she steadied herself quickly by gripping onto the side of a nearby table that she was grateful had been there. This was not the time to panic, this was not the time to panic. She successfully (miraculously was more like it, really) was able to calm her breath right before it had turned into hyperventilation, which in turn slowed her speeding heart rate as well.
A dreadful flash of a familiar green light captured Ginny’s attention as she continued to grip onto the side of the table and the present. There was a second of trying to comprehend what had just happened when the deputy head of the Magical Law Enforcement department instantly collapsed. With the blinding green light combined with the way he fell, it was easy to deduce that he was never standing again. Silence. A scream. Chaos. It was as if it all happened in slow motion, allowing Ginny all of the time in the world to understand what was happening, but it hadn’t completely clicked until the scream. A scream that made the hair on her arms stand at attention.
Not again, she couldn’t help herself from thinking before the fighting ensued all around her. Fight now, panic later, was her next thought. After the ear-piercing scream, then it was as if time seemed to right itself, no longer in slow motion. Ginny forced the desperate, plaguing memories from resurfacing by pulling out her wand and throwing herself into the chaos. Curses and hexes were cast every which way, but she kept her head level as she dodged the spells and shot her own. Aiming a curse at a nearby Death Eater, hitting them right in the chest, she didn’t bother allowing herself the satisfaction of watching them crumble in a heap on the floor before turning away and focusing on another. However, when she turned around, she was thankful to have turned around when she did as a curse whirred past her and there was just enough time to dodge it without serious injury. Feeling a stream of hot blood pour down from her forehead, she winced but was relieved that the cut wasn’t too deep when she pressed a finger to it. She wiped away the blood as it came dangerously close to clouding her vision, smearing it uglily across her eyebrow and forehead.
Ginny took a half of a second to scan the area for someone she recognized within the blur of masked Death Eaters and curses that were flying back and forth, making it difficult to concentrate on what she was doing and what she should do. It was a waste of time to see if she could find someone, to make sure they were okay. Hopefully, after this was over, no one would be seriously hurt. She didn’t know if she could take another person ripped out of her life. A shout of “Watch out!” caught her attention, knowing somehow it was meant for her, she looked in front of her. Before Ginny had the chance to produce a shield charm, a Death Eater was pointing their wand at her already flicking their wand to cast a curse towards her. Her hand wouldn’t cooperate with her in her moment of panic, and she wasn’t able to defend herself. Move, Ginny. Panic later.
Suddenly, there was hand pushing against Ginny’s back, forcing her to the ground. Her knees banging painfully and her breath being caught from the forceful impact, she took a couple of inhales, hoping a couple of seconds would clear her head. Looking up, the Death Eater that was close to possibly killing her was on the ground and she couldn’t tell if they were breathing. Didn’t really care either. Hurried feet stepped in front of her and she glanced up to (finally) see a familiar face looking down at her with an extended hand for her to grab to pull her up. She took a hold of their hand, and she stood once more. With an hoarse, appreciative “Thanks”, she gripped her wand a bit tighter as well attempted to keep a strong hold on her mind from wandering into the darkest depths of what threatened to break free. She would allow it to happen later. Please, just, not now. She couldn’t remember if the other person said anything before forcing her attention back to the fight and hurling curses and hexes at Death Eaters.
