“This girl said she hated dogs, Noelle. Dogs. That’s like a million points in the ‘no’ column.” Elara had always been a social butterfly; meeting new people gave her energy. Still, she cherished every moment spent with Noelle. “If they can’t handle you, they’re idiots and they don’t deserve you. You’re awesome, okay? The right one isn’t gonna leave, Noelle. They’re going to stand by your side no matter what and with them you’ll believe that everything is going to be okay again…and it will be.” No matter how she felt about Noelle, Elara just wanted her best friend to be happy.
“What can I say. I’m a sucker for accents. And he’s a good time. And a writer. He’s just not marriage material at all. Fun, but not marriage material. Or really boyfriend material. Like…one night stand material. See, this is why you and I work. Cause we’ll fight for the other.”
“Oh shit, she hates dogs? I take it back, you’re not allowed to see her anymore. Who hates dogs? What even is that?” Smiling, Noelle squeezed Elara’s hand, this time not loosening her grip for several seconds. She was Noelle’s lifeline, and when her thoughts drifted to their current subject, Noelle didn’t want to let go. “I’m not... whole anymore. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be. I wouldn’t blame someone for leaving for that. It’ll just slowly kill me on the inside, it’s fine. Thanks, El. Ah, writers.” Noelle laughed lightly. “We’re all tortured souls, I can see the appeal. Like I said, whoever you date, I won’t judge. Dog hating excluded. You’re my best friend and I love you. I’ll always fight for you.”
