@msnm-comic
rises from my eternal grave to give you this rambly thing abt teiāaaās feelings about his hair!!!! I now must return to my coffin goodnight
So I'm re-reading MSNM and I'm wondering how you draw and color your backgrounds (mainly landscapes) because they always look so awesome
Ahh thank you so much!! I really love drawing backgrounds and landscapes so I put a lot of time into them. :) The process is really simple though!! I donāt have any msnm stuff to demonstrate with right now, so hereās a random dnd drawing in the same style (in msnm though I use actual finished lines lol):Ā
Basically I just lay down gradients with an airbrush, and then sample colors from that gradient and make blobs with a plain old hard round brush. Make more blobs until it looks like a landscape. A few overlay layers for lighting effects and thatās it! Itās easy, but it can be time consuming. I usually zone out for a while when Iām doing stuff like this.
I'm old!!! And some updates.
Hey guys!! It's my birthday!! I'm 23 now. Gross????
A little update, next week is finals week and then I'm ?? Graduating?? On the 5th?? I'm not actually going to be done with college, I'm in 5 classes over the summer, and then I'll have like 3 more in fall and then....... I can actually be a real person..... lol...
Msnm updates are probably going to keep being slow, unfortunately, I'm sorry!!! I'm working on a new graphic novel (!!!) about a warlock and her demon girlfriend, if you're into that kinda stuff then get pumped cause the first chapter will be online once I finish it! That project is kind of a sprint, and msnm is a marathon. I want Basiva to be done within a year, but msnm can take as long as it needs to. I had to think a lot about this, but I'm really excited about basiva and I want to make it happen while I have that energy and passion!!
Msnm is always going to be my baby, my most special project, but sometimes it has to take a backseat to other stuff. That sucks, but I'm only one person and I only have so much time in a week.
I hope you'll all stick with me even though I won't be able to update weekly anymore for a while!!! You've been amazing over the past 2 years, it really means a lot to me!!!!
All that being said, I should have a new page this week, finally!!
SORRY IāM DYING
Hey guys Iām real sorry for the lack of updates. I have a lot of weird life stuff going on right now and Iāve been coping by drawing other stuff thatās more relaxing to work on than msnm. Iām not going anywhere, just taking a little break to clear my head right nowĀ āļø
so uh... martian-human hybrids are a thing? *v*
Oh, whoops, did I say something about that......
every time someone asks me about lore I grow incrementally strongerĀ
my time is comingĀ
soonĀ
Oh hey also I just now noticed the ribs and steak had a plant garnish or smth so I guess that the deffo have that, at least!
Yeee, that was more for looks cause Jo doesnāt slack on plating but it was something they could have eaten.
How do Martians spice their food? I'm going to make the leap to assume that they need some degree of salt in their diet, since Claire seemed to like the meat and unsalted meat is GROSS. But if they're carnivores, then do they use plant-based spices? You talking about how Martians think humans eating plants is weird would indicate otherwise, but at the same time carnivores on earth will eat plants to help with digestion and stuff so it seems plausible (at least to me) that they might have (1/2)
(cont.)Ā --plants for spices. But then what plants would they use? And moving onward, would Martians be able to eat things like garlic, or cocoa? Because those contain chemical compounds that are toxic to dogs and cats, at least (I canāt find anything for other species of predatory animals RIP) so would that be a problem for Martians who were trying to eat human food? (Also, on that note, can/do Martians eat spicy foods?) (Food as it pertains to world-building really fascinates me! ^^) (2/2)
This is something Iāve thought a lot about too!!Ā They definitely use salt, pretty extensively too once you get into things like food preservation.Ā OtherĀ āspicesā are mostly mineral-based, they eat different types of clays and minerals, including some metals like copper and iron oxide.Ā Other than that a lot of the flavor comes from animal products; things similar to honey, cultured dairy, certain types of bugs, the venom of some animals, etc. There are lots of weird animals on Mars that theyāve found creative ways to make use of!Ā Most Martian food tastes... a little weird to a human palette, and Martians have no problem with the taste of unseasoned meat, so. Rip Claireās taste buds. (Jorei is an excellent cook though, so anything he makes will be at least okay)Ā Some Martian food is a little spicy, but itās generally more sour or bitter. They can digest bones, fur, keratin, some metals, but they arenāt good with really any plant matter.
As for eating plants, they definitely eat some!! They are mostly used medicinally, and rarely for seasoning food.Ā HOWEVER they will eat more plants during times of famine (aka now).Ā Of course they canāt chew plants at all, they donāt have any grinding teeth, so itās always a challenge.
Eating human food gets a little tricky, because it tastes very good, but it really isnāt good for them. Teiāaa learned this the hard way while he was on Earth. They arenāt allergic to cocoa or garlic (there is actually an interesting history of chocolate trade between the two planets, they absolutely love chocolate) but they are deathly allergic to coffee, and some other things.
(Also, human-martian hybrids need the same sort of vitamins as humans to survive, but have the same sensitive stomachs as their Naāasin parents. These people generally only live on Earth, but if any found their way to Mars they would have a pretty tough time...)
Question. Is Claire going to be okay, nutrition-wise, on Mars? Because if Martians only really eat meat, is she going to get the vitamins and stuff she needs? Does she have supplements with her? And if so, what happens when they run out?
THIS IS PLANNED TO COME UP IN THE COMIC ACTUALLY!! Short answer: no and she is concerned about it lol.Ā
Her friends will do their best to keep her healthy though!! Martians know humans need to eat.. plants?? which sounds gross but whatever aliens are weird. Claire will be okay, but she is going to miss salad a lot more than she ever thought she would lol
Wait, how old is Lyar when he dies anyway? B/c this comic takes place in the 21st century, right? but then if he's king in 1863ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ heck, what's the average lifespan for a martian? O_O
Oh man someone finally asked this, Lyar died at around 200 (using our years here, on Mars he would be around 110), which is pretty young for a martian to die, actually!! Their average lifespan is around 250, and they age slower than humans after they reach adulthood.Ā It was reported that humans who moved to Mars in the time before the war also lived longer than normal, itās rumored that it has something to do with the atmosphere.
About Martian religion(s)!
ANSWERING A QUESTION FROM TWITTER ON HERE CAUSE HOO BOY DO I WRITE LONG THINGS OOPSĀ
Like on Earth, religion on Mars plays a different role in the lives of different people. To some people like Jorei, it doesnāt mean anything, while to others like Teiāaa their religion can take up most of their life.Ā There are many religions on mars but Iāve only really developed the main one so here we go!!Ā
Teiāamar is a follower ofĀ Tivak, the largest and oldest religion on Mars, which is centered around the mother goddess Tiv.Ā She is synonymous with the sun, and is a pretty moody lady. Itās said that the oceans were created from her tears as she wept over the fighting between the two races she created, the Naāasin and the Tenari. She then sent the Tenari to live in the sea so they would stop fighting with each other.Ā Also, she made the stars when she got angry and shot millions of comets through the shroud of night while fighting the twin moons.Ā Her worshipers value honesty with each other and oneself, charity, and courage.Ā Tivak people believe life is cyclical, and that time is not linear but constant and fluid. They see the body as a vessel for their eternal soul, and see this life as only a small step in their existence.Ā
Tivās most devout followers are the Teāeka, the converted guards of the tyrant queen Nasiāarin. They now serve as a kind of secret service to the royal family, and as spiritual protectors of the country.Ā The intersection of religion and government is something which hasnāt really caused as many problems for Mars as it has historically caused for humans, luckily. The monarchs ruling Naāasi function as high priestesses/priests and often as oracles of Tiv, and are in very close contact with the Teāeka who can give younger rulers guidance.Ā
Teiāaa and Lyarās scars are a sign of their religious devotion, as well the vulnerability that comes with the nature of their position. They are symbols meant to protect them from physical and spiritual harm.Ā
The Tenari have their own version of Tivak, but not much news comes out of Tenaa so who knows whatās up with that.
(also, itās important to note that Tiv and everything around her are 100% real to teiāaa and to the world of msnm)Ā
2 things!!
First thing: There wonāt be a new page tomorrow because I have to deal with stuff with my bank and donāt have a buffer cause Iām a bad webcomic artist.Ā
Second thing!!: on the topic of martian culture and inspiration from existing cultures, if I ever draw or write something that you feel is insensitive or hurtful to an existing culture please let me know!! I deliberately donāt reference any real peoples on Earth when Iām coming up with stuff for msnm, but that tactic also runs the risk of accidentally creating something that is tone deaf or lacking insight. I donāt want to hurt anybody with my work!!
Is it normal for martians to live in tent houses like the one the main cast is currently in? Or is it just a traditional house or a temporary setup or smth? Also, what were your inspirations for Martian culture (or the culture shown in the comic rn)?
RUBS MY GRUBBY HANDS TOGETHER YES LET ME TALK TO YOU ABOUT THESE ALIENS!!!!Ā
Basically, it is not normal for Martians to live in tents! Nesās tent was a temporary settlement because there arenāt exactly hotels or anything in Inan, but it isnāt normal for Teiāaa and Jorei, who would be used to smaller, less extravagant lodging. Her tent is actually a borrowed military shelter meant to house 20 people, lol.
The culture that Jorei and Teiāaa come from is unique on Mars! They are part of the Inani ethnic group, an ancient people who revived their ancestorsā nomadic culture after the Martian Great War (more on that later) as a way of rejecting the modern society which lead to that unrest. They live in medium to large tribes (Jorei and Teiāaaās is the Klyr tribe) and are in many ways untouchable to the Naāasin government because they donāt involve themselves in the nationwide economy and are physically hard to get to.Ā Theyāre kind ofĀ āoff the gridā and some people hold prejudice against them because theyāre usually reluctant to send their own to fight in the current war. However, they are being gravely affected by the conflict, particularly the bombings on launch bays in their land, which have wrought havoc on the animal populations they depend on to survive. They are currently experiencing a sort of famine.
They move usually twice a year to avoid the harsh seasonal shifts of their planet, roaming around the valleys and mountains of Inan. There are many tribes, and each one has a loose territorial claim on an area of land, but they rarely come into contact with each other and those territories arenāt strictly maintained.
The Inani people also have an unusually high instance of albinism (Jorei for example) due to small, isolated gene pools. Theyāre known to be pale and have poor eyesight.
Also, Teiāaa is unique because he grew up between his Inani tribe and the royal family in the highly metropolitan area of Jenāatin! His family thinks heās a city boy now.
As for inspiration, itās kind of just from my own imagination and loosely based on tribal and nomadic societies on Earth, but not on one in particular! The Inani culture is kind of an imagining of how we might have evolved if we never developed agriculture, since Martians are carnivorous.
I have two questions. One, do Martians have amusement parks or is that just a human thing (or do humans even have amusement parks?) Two, what's the 'standard instruction' that all these high schools keep deviating from and keep getting shut down over?
Ahh I hope you donāt mind if I publish this!! Iām always excited to talk abt the world and stuff with you guys :āā)Ā
As for amusement parks yeah they probably have stuff like that! If they didnāt come up with it on their own then they would have copied what they saw on Earth, since before the war there was a lot of sharing of ideas and interests. Also, the first roller coaster was built before the war began so they would have had time to get on that hot technology!!Ā Martian amusement parks probably donāt have the same sort of branding as Human ones do though, so thereās no like disney world equivalent (unfortunately).
About the school thing: American schools implemented standard instruction under the guise of ensuring that every student would have access to the same standardized education, regardless of zoning etc. But really it was a gross move because schools that failed to keep up with the curriculum (usually because of a lack of resources) would be closed, leaving the students with nowhere to go. It obviously targeted schools in low income areas. The whole thing started during Claireās childhood, so her generation is the one taking most of the hits. Theyāre Mad About It.
