            “ SERIOUSLY. “, MATTY REPLIED, his smile still bright on his features – it was wonderful to see how her excitement grew with her confidence. giving classes in skiing might not be his usual job, but he enjoyed it when the students were people like rowan – people who were eager to learn and enthusiastic as well. though, as she looked behind her, mattias’ eyes went wide and he could alreayd see this going wrong – “ no, no, rowan, try to stay focused – “, the man tried to salvage the situation but it as too late. she was already starting to rock on her skiis and it took every strength he had and bit of hand / foot coordination to make sure they both remained upright. “ it’s okay. “, the man eventually let out as the situation seemed to be back under control. “ just… try to stay focused. “, matty reminded her, chuckling now as he shook his head.

Rowan couldn’t help her own little laugh, a reaction to the situation and to Matty’s own chuckle. She hesitantly, a little afraid that she would end up send them tumbling down the hill, reached up to brush a lock of hair away from her face, feeling a slight flush to her face despite the cold. “I...I can do that...sorry...god, I didn’t realize how much I have to concentrate?” she babbled, reaching for Matty’s hand once more. “Please tell me you’ve taught someone worse than me before.”

           MATTIAS COULD NOTICE her insecurity on the skiis – but of course there was no surprise there. he had hardly ever seen a first time skiier do amazing and be confident. everyone had to learn at some point. when she pointed out that it was kind of fun, the  man couldn’t help but chuckle. “ you already think this is fun ? oh you are going to love the real deal, then ! “, the man reassured her, eyebrows raising in a hopeful manner. “ don’t worry – i got you. “, matty told her, lips still curled up into a smile. “ see – we are already halfway down the slope. “.

His confidence was infectious and Rowan found herself grinning back at him, feeling actually excited about maybe taking on a bigger hill-- or maybe she could even do it on her own! When he assured her that he had her and said they were half way down already, her jaw dropped. “Seriously?” she questioned, unable to stop herself from glancing behind her to see. That simple action, turning her attention away from her skiis and Mattias disoriented her. One of her feet, with the long skii attached, turned with her, tucking under the other one and making her body rock unsteadily. Her eyes widened and her grip on the other tightened, “Shoot, sorry! Oh god, I--” she started apologizing rapidly and trying her best to remain upright and not falling down into the snow-- or worse, right into the very helpful guy.

             WITH HER HANDS firmly in his, matty smiled and nodded when the girl said she was definitely ready. “ alright then – here wo go. “, mattias informed her. he began to slowly move his skiis from left to right, getting them into motion while making sure he would not go down the slope too fast. just nice and controlled as he made sure rowan was steady on her own skiis. “ see – this isn’t too bad. “, he smiled as they were going down, him with his back facing first, eyes focused on the girl and her skiis and back up to her face.

Rowan nodded her head as Matty did and whe he began to slowly move his skiis, her gaze immediately flew to his feet. She tried to mimic the action, though where his movements were smooth, hers were like stop motion. Yet she did feel surprisingly secure-- he wasn’t about to send her flying down the mountain. She looked back at him, her lips curving up into another smile, a little more shy now that they actually started going. “This is...this is kind of fun...” she admitted, “I feel like I’m not doing much here though...so please don’t let me go.”

“two years here, and i still can’t deal with the freakin’ black ice here,” mickey complained, lying back down on the freezing ground. all she wanted to do was lie there and melt away, but unfortunately for her, the day still existed. “maybe if you pour whatever hot drink you’ve got there on top of me, i can tell my boss that i can’t come in today.”

“I don’t think anyone could get used to it. It’s actually terrifying,” Rowan stated, giving her head a small, solemn nod. However, when Mickey laid back down, the facade was broken slightly and she gave the other woman a small smile. “I’d feel pretty awful doing that, but I’d be willing to exaggerate a little and say that you’re totally unable to work due to this tragic injury.”

Even on vacation, Rowan had managed to slip away from her family and spend several hours at the local library. She had holed herself away in one of the corners with an Agatha Christie novel in one hand and her laptop charging away on her other side. Periodically she would reach over to brush her fingers against the touch pad to wake the laptop up...at least until the red dead battery symbol popped up. Rowan cursed beneath her breath, glancing around at the other library patrons before making her way over to someone that was closer to her age than most of the others. “Uh-- excuse me...do you know if they’ve got any spare chargers here that people can borrow?”

Though not a pro, Ava would consider themselves to be seasoned when it came to the slopes, but that didn’t mean she was without her moments. “It was when I was still a teen, I was in lessons and part of a team. Most of the time, it was great, it meant meeting people my own age that also enjoyed the sport, but unfortunately, one day I had a bit of a cold starting and after taking a somewhat nasty; but harmless fall, my nose bled…for what seemed like ever.” She went on, chuckling softly as she recalled the memory. “So, the teacher in charge had to call out for my dad, but failed to mention that I was having a nose bleed, so let’s just say when he arrived to the scene of bright red snow surrounding me, he rightfully panicked.” Still smiling, Ava shrugged. “We laugh about it now, though, I did eventually learn a trick for preventing nose bleeds..” 

Rowan was engrossed in the story from the start, making small noises at each part that required a little gasp or a chuckle, eyes widening at the image of the bright red snow. “Oh, god!” she managed afterwards, shaking her head in amused awe. “I would be so scared-- did you get scared at all? Or were you totally fine with it all?”

The smile spread a little bigger on their lips as Rowan spoke. “I find the ground isn’t the worst place to be sitting. Particularly if it’s some fluffy snowbank.” They added, taking a look up at the mountain. “Besides, it doesn’t look icy so at least it won’t hurt if we fall.”

“Fluffy snowbank does sound a lot better than sliding on some hard ice,” Rowan admitted, then taking a glance down at the snow outfit that she had bought for the trip. “And I guess all of this cushion will help...I thought I was going to feel like a marshmallow but I’m pretty thankful for it now.”

          WHEN SHE SAID she thought she was ready, matty chuckled again, eyes focused on her before replying: “ i’ll need a little more than ‘ i think ‘. are you sure ? “, lifting a brow. after all, he did not want to push her ( or pull her, in this case ) into something she did not wish to do. “ it looks a lot more scary than what it actually though, believe me. “, mattias reassured her once more, offering her a kind smile.

His expression and question made Rowan immediately decide that she liked him. Anyone that didn’t immediately start pulling her on a pair of skiis are alright in her book. So she grinned at him, “Okay...okay. I’m definitely ready.”

📚 = What is your muse’s favorite genre of books? What are some of their favorite authors and/or books?

Rowan loves classic lit! She’s a literature major at university and she’s a big fan of Shakespeare. Her favorite play is Much Ado About Nothing, purely because of Beatrice and Benedick. 

🍦 = What is your muse’s favorite ice cream flavor? Do they prefer eating it in a cone, cup/bowl, or straight from the carton? Do they use any toppings?

Rowan is a vanilla ice cream loaded up with every imaginable topping kind of gal. She will use a bowl until she can justify just adding the toppings right into the carton without judgement. 

🏥  = Has your muse ever been to the hospital for an injury or illness? How long did they have to stay?

Minor injuries and illnesses, but nothing too extensive.

Skiing was one of the few things Ava had been looking forward to on this trip, a way to distance herself from her phone and forget about the weight of the world on her shoulders. She knew her friends were right, when it came to needing to unwind, but it was easier said than done. It had been years though since Ava had last found the time to go skiing, something she LOVED doing with her father growing up. So, as she skimmed the shop, waiting for a tenant to be available, she overheard the blonde speaking and couldn’t help but chuckle, “If it makes you feel any better, I can tell you a story of one of my embarassing moments while on the slopes, almost gave my dad a heart attack now that I think back..” Ava offered, not sure if the story would help or make the other’s concerns worse. 

At the other’s words, Rowan’s interest was immediately piqued. She turned folding her arms under her chest as she nodded enthusiastically, decidedly not about to put any skiis on for the moment. “Yes, please. I need to hear this story now. If I can focus on someone else having some kind of embarrassing encounter, I think I might not be so mortified.”

“You know, at least it’ll be a good story!” She chirps, smiling at the other girl, a warmth in her eyes. But then again, Chloe’s been doing this for what feels like forever by this point, so it’s not as though she’ll be falling too much. “And I mean, maybe you’ll surprise yourself! Practice makes perfect and all. They’ve got some great skiing instructors out here if you’re interested?” The darker haired girl raises an eyebrow. “We can go together if you want? I find it makes things a little less scary when you’re not alone.”

Rowan can’t help but to smile at the other woman, her energy and kindness making her feel like maybe just maybe this wouldn’t be quite the disaster she was imagining. “I would be totally okay with a ski instructor, but won’t we be like...the oldest people there by a long shot?” she asked, then imagining what it would be like to fall on her ass and have children laughing at her.

Having a Monday off was a rare occurrence, but one Nico intended to take full advantage of. Despite his position at the mountain, he didn’t get to enjoy it as much as he’d liked, but when he was able to he loved taking full advantage of his free seasonal passes. After making his round, to say his hello’s to the workers, he decided on testing out new skis, perking a brow up as the blonde adjacent from him started to speak. “Part of anything we do is failing and falling, I ensure you that even the best of the best athletes, gold medalists included fell on their first run and the perk of a snow sport is it’s incredibly difficult to recognize a soul once you’re off the slope.” 

Compared to her, this man actually looked like he belonged on the mountain. It made Rowan feel pretty out of place, but she did her best to keep that specific insecurity hidden. Instead she just smirked, unable to quite help herself there. “Alright, you’re sounding a bit like my parents now with the failing and falling,” she teased. “But incredibly helpful that at least no one will know it’s me.” She eyed his gear, motioning to it briefly. “I’m guessing that you’re one of the best of the best athletes?”

          MATTIAS LAUGHED ONCE again, shaking his head. “ i promise. “, he reassured her, but then quickly added. “ though i promise all your worries will end up being idle. “. when she decided to place her hands in his, matty wrapped his gloved fingers around her own the best he could, making sure to have a good grip before he asked: “ alright – ready ? just follow my lead, okay ? “, smiling at her.

His laugh came as a relief and Rowan reminded herself that unlike her, he no doubt knew this mountain...and how to ski. So she gave her head a nod, her own fingers curling up to hold onto his tightly. “I...think I might be ready,” she gave her head another, more decisive nod.

          MATTIAS COULDN’T HELP but chuckle upon hearing her concerns. “ trust me – i been up here on the slope… you would not be the only person to fall. in fact, so many people fall around here, no one even looks oddly at it. “, he reassured, holding out his hands for her. “ come on, lets go together. “, matty offered. while he was a snowboard instructor, he knew skiing well enough to substitute for colleagues whenever they couldn’t make it. “ i’ll go backwards, and you just follow my lead, okay ? “.

Rowan gave him glance that clearly said she wasn’t too sure about that, but when he reached his hands out, she found herself following suit, placing her own gloved hands on top of his. “If I fall and like squish you or send us both going down this mountain like cartoon characters you have to promise not to hate me, okay?” she blurted out.

Ali gave the other a small shake of their head as they spoke. “It’s not embarrassing, everyone’s gone through that. I doubt anyone’s ever put on skis and never fell even once.” They tried to reassure the other. “But if it means anything, anytime you fall, I’ll fall with you, so you won’t be alone.”

The other’s words did something to at least settle some of Rowan’s nerves and she gave them a smile. “Okay, but just so you know we are absolutely going to spend most of our time on the ground,” Rowan warned, though she was entirely light hearted as she did so.

He’d be a little distracted as he stepped inside Tim Hortons, having not noticed the line until he practically bumped into someone who was also heading for the end of the line. “I’m so sorry.” Phil started, taking a step back with an apologetic smile. “Please, you were here first.”

Rowan practically whipped around when she heard the voice apologize. Immediately, her hand flew up to her mouth and she stepped back, giving her head a small shake. “Oh, god, I’m so sorry. I was totally not paying attention-- caffeine tunnel vision, you know?” she blurted out, the words spilling forth. “You should go first-- mostly because that was totally rude of me.”
