Apple Developers Conference (WWDC 2011)
I am out at the WWDC right now in San Francisco, and so far so good (minus the fact that they are giving out no free shwag this year, boooo).聽 Anyhow, I compiled some notes/observations from the first two days out here and listed them below.聽 I am an Android guy but even I have to admit that there is some pretty exciting stuff going on (I am actually buying into the cloud.
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 iOS5, slated to be released sometime this fall, went through an overhaul.聽 There is a new notification center similar to the notification bar on Android.聽 With the amount of push notifications that come in, it only makes sense for these to be organized somewhere so after you unlock your phone you can refer to a list of all the notifications that you have got(facebook, twitter, sms, voice calls, etc).聽 This change applies to in app messages as well, no more Dialogs, just a small dropdown that notifies the user in app.
Support for tabbed browsing in Safari
Camera editing has been updated and the camera icon has been made available from the locked screen allowing the user to go right into the camera functionality, the volume button even doubles as a shutter.
Twitter will now be integrated into the OS, take a picture and there is a new share option (tweet).聽 Twitter will also have a single sign on in the settings screen
OpenGL will be dummied down so they introduced the new GLKit making animations even easier.
There is a new auto-relayout now for localization (support for left to right and right to left languages) in which your layout (buttons included) will relayout based on the language.
There is a new messaging system that is going to be similar to BBM
There is a new news-stand app that will be integrated into the OS, providing a one stop shop for your magazine subscriptions (take that Blio)
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 iOS5 is really centered around cutting cords, which takes us to...
Will offer 5GB worth of free storage and supports two paradigms.聽 Key/Value storage where you can imagine storing things like a bookmark that references a page in a book.聽 And document storage.聽 Document storage is exactly like it sounds, putting docs into the cloud. 聽
路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 iCloud enabled apps will synchronize content across devices using metadata and just the "deltas" of the files for improved efficiency
Everything is being moved to the cloud (MobileME is officially dead and Steve Jobs actually joked that they got that one wrong), including iTunes.聽 iTunes will even offer a matching program where you can rip your non itunes purchased songs and synchronize them across devices for 24.95 a year.
Will have an app called Photostream which will synchronize the last 1000 photos across devices, and will be stored in the cloud for a maximum of 30 days.聽 Users can save the photos locally at any time.
Will no longer be available at retail outlets, you can only purchase the upgrade through the mac store, for 29.95, compared to the 129.95 price tag of years past.
