Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden and Ian McKellen have been cast in Working Title’s upcoming movie version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical “Cats.”

Tom Hooper, the Oscar-winning director of “The King’s Speech,” will direct “Cats,” which is set to begin shooting in Britain in November. The screenplay by Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”) is based on Lloyd Webber’s musical, which was itself adapted from a book of children’s poems by T.S. Eliot.

Hudson, who won an Oscar in 2007 for her breakout role in “Dreamgirls,” will play Grizabella, the former “glamour cat” who falls on hard times and gets to sing about it in showstopper “Memory.” It’s unclear which roles will be played by Swift, Corden and McKellen.

The Daily Mail was the first to report the casting news, which was confirmed to Variety.

“Cats” is one of the most successful musicals in history, enjoying long runs both in London’s West End and on Broadway. The possibility of a movie version has long been bandied about.

Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan brought another beloved stage musical, “Les Miserables,” to the big screen in 2012. That film was nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards and won a statuette for Anne Hathaway as best supporting actress.

Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” which was published in 1939, is a collection of poems about creatures known as “Jellicle cats” and their secret world, but lacks an overarching story line. Lloyd Webber’s musical stitches the poems together into a tale of cats seeking some sort of feline redemption in the made-up “Heaviside layer” above London, “up, up, up past the Russell Hotel.”

Besides tired and tattered Grizabella, other characters include Old Deuteronomy, Macavity, and the Rum Tum Tugger.

also just to add traders aren’t “gatekeepers” no one’s stopping you all from actually getting the boot through the master or if you don’t wanna pay for it, wait a couple months for it to be giftable/tradeable??? all everyone including op is saying have some respect for the person who risked jail time to film this??? it’s so easy to trace it back to them??

i.e copyright sends a message to a person who posted it publicly and of course they rat out the person they got it from so that they don’t get in trouble. and since so few people have it, it’s sooo easy to follow that path and trace it back to the original filmer. this has literally happened before in the west end which is why we get fewer boots from there.

please just please respect the filmer’s rules because you’re hurting the entire community who rely on bootlegs when you disrespect them.

Just let teens be

Yesterday I saw a lot of people complaining about SpongeBob Squarepants’ commercial success and their 12 Tony nominations. They were mostly blaming the teen population for making the show popular. It’s sad that whenever older generation find something unsatisfying, they always regard the teens as the cesspool of vulgarity.

Thinking that “annoying” teens are the reason the show succeeds is a way of disrespecting hundreds of people who worked hard on the show. Performers, composers, technicians, designers and other countless groups took their jobs seriously and fully committed to this project. This is why the show was given 12 well-deserved Tony nominations yesterday. These people who worked on the musical deserve to be praised, respected and celebrated for what they do.

Speaking of composers, the show’s songs are a collaborative effort from multiple well-known musicians such as Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie andPanic! at the Disco. What is interesting is that David Bowie he had been showing interest in the musical. But since he did not have time to write a new song for the musical, he suggested that the creators take one of the lesser-known songs. So under David Bowie’s blessing, one of his songs was adapted to be in the musical. These musicians might not have participated at all if they thought the musical was just going to be a “cringey,” low effort musical that just relies on “teen fandom” and viral marketing.

When teens are not interested in musical and theatre, people call them uncultured. When teens do like musicals and theatre, people call them immature or say they will ruin everything. When teens are talented, people say they will fail soon. When teens are serious activists, people call them attention-seeking crybabies. What do people actually want the teens to do? This vicious cycle has been going on for decades, no, centuries. It’s time to let the teens like whatever they want.
