Best Brain Supplements for Seniors
There is no single supplement proven to improve brain health or prevent dementia in everyone.
For adults over 60:
Vitamin B12 is the most important to check because deficiency can cause memory problems, confusion, balance difficulties and nerve damage. Supplementation helps when deficiency or poor absorption is present — particularly among people taking metformin or long-term acid-reducing medicines. A blood test should guide treatment. A standard once-daily multivitamin has shown a modest improvement in memory in some trials involving older adults, but it is not a dementia treatment. National Institute on Aging
Omega-3, ginkgo biloba, high-dose vitamin E and commercial “nootropic” blends have not consistently demonstrated meaningful cognitive benefits in healthy adults.
Best practical answer: Check B12 and other possible deficiencies with a clinician first. If none exist, no specific “brain supplement” can currently be called the best. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, blood-pressure control, social activity and a Mediterranean-style diet have stronger overall support for healthy brain aging.
Consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements, especially if you use blood thinners or several medications.
