The first time we see ryan (besides when he is a baby) he is wearing makeup thats clearly inspired by david bowie.

Infinity train is an exceptional show, with so many good characters and storylines. However, even the best pieces of media can have problems - nothing is perfect. And a problem exists with the latest season of infinity train. That problem is queerbaiting (it’s especially apparent in 4x01). A lot of people dont seem to get why it is queerbaiting so I want to break down some stuff that happened in just the first 11 minute episode of the show and the trailer so I wont spoil the entire show for people who havent seen it yet besides the obvious spoiler that rymin is not endgame. The first episode is supposed to get the viewers invested in the show and give us a reason to keep watching. Clearly the creators wanted the shows lgbt+ viewers to continue watching to see if rymin would get together in the end from the first episode.

Queercoding and queerbaiting are not the same thing but queerbaiting almost always involves queercoding. Queercoding can be a totally positive thing when its done to more minor characters and there is canon LGBT rep. She-ra is a good example of a show with a LOT of queercoded characters where it is never confirmed. But she-ra still did not queerbait bc the two leads end up in a lesbian relationship as well as some other wlw and mlm side pairings. Also she-ra had double trouble as textually explicit nonbinary rep while having another trans coded character (jewelstar) that was less significant to the plot.

David bowie was one of the first openly lgbt celebrities and probably is one of the most influential lgbt people of all time. Using the word destiny to talk about their relationship is clearly coding the relationship to be romantic. They had the same number, “202”.  They were practically in couples counseling. When there are two people in a relationship that has been pre-established and they are in the same age group it seems like the logical conclusion that there would be a romantic undertone to their relationship. 

In animation, there is hardly any mlm rep. There is far more rep of nontoxic male friendships. Bow and Sea Hawk from she-ra, sokka and aang in atla, benson and dave from kipo and the age of wonderbeasts. There is far more representation for nontoxic guy friends than there is for mlm so mlm rep is far more important.

I think Infinity Train Book 4 should definitely be looked through in the lens of “This was never meant to be the final season” and, in likelihood, was probably originally intended as a break from the heaviness of Book 3 and setup for goings-on in the originally planned Book 5.

The backbone of the season is Ryan and Min-Gi’s relationship and I think they handled it pretty well; I’d talk more about specifics but I’m on mobile and really don’t feel like figuring out how to make a Read More but you can check out the tags for the TL;DR

As an asian person I really appreciate how Ryan was written. One of his most defining traits is his creativity, both in expression and problem solving.

Ryan clearly hates conforming, hates doing things the long and boring way as well as literally wanting to name the band fucking Choice Chicken Judy. Music is so important to his life that he recklessly forgoes his education to start a band tour across Canada.

And this trait bleeds in to the way he tries getting in the party. Episode 5 has Min arguing they should wait in line, only for Ryan to attempt all sorts of increasingly strange methods: persuasion, digging over/under, testing the portals, to cleverly shaping the hardening material into a faux guitar. There's more to the scheme but nonetheless, it shows Ryan as a lateral thinker.

And while lateral thinking sometimes gets Ryan into trouble and results in mild humiliation, it also serves as one of Ryan's greatest strengths. This is especially the case during their time in the art museum car where Ryan initially looks foolish trying to find a portal within the paintings but later figures out that one of the abstract sculptures resembles the doorway by incorporating Min's earlier remark about seeing things from a holistic view. (It's worth mentioning Min also figures this out sometime after.)

Now why is this relevant to Asian representation? The answer is because often in western stories, characters of asian descent are frequently depicted as, well.... 'academic'. And boringly so. Their greatest strengths tend to lie in discipline and rote memorization. And Ryan breaks that mold completely. Does Ryan have a habit of forgetting to use his brain cells? Yes. But Ryan also exhibits a type of intelligence so often underrepresented in asian characters, and that's why I think his characterization is pretty damn noteworthy.
