Playing through my first run of RDR2, so I’m busy doing not-the-plot as often as possible. I finally meet Mary at the farm to rescue her brother, and I notice a funny little line Jamie drops on the ride back to Valentine.

He says Mary’s husband died of pneumonia, but his exact phrasing uses the man’s name: Barry. Mary and Barry Linton.

Keeping in mind what Hosea says when he and Arthur try hunting that bear - that people with rhyming names shouldn’t date (or something along those lines)… what a funny little Easter egg to drop.

Maybe I’m reading into it too much, or maybe it’s stupid, but that callback has been living in my brain for a couple days, and I just can’t get over how much I love that that’s how they chose to share with the player that Mary’s life is never to be void of Arthur; even tho she effectively dumps this man bc her dad sucks preceding the plot of the game, the man she marries instead is plagued with the fate of not being The Endgame Man. That dude was never going to “save” her from a life with Arthur, their lives are meant to be forever intertwined one way or another, and the game devs tell us that before we even know it’s a damn question.

This adventure of a game is so complex and intricate and creative with its storytelling jesus christ

I’ve started playing rdr2

And like, I know what happens already bc it’s been several years post-game release

But knowing Arthur kicks the bucket in the end makes playing it feel so melancholic (is that how you say it?) - like everything I do will not matter. So since it doesn’t matter, I’m gonna drag my feet and hunt and explore as much as I damn well please the entire game. He’s gonna be a happy little man enjoying nature and being good and not get sick for as long as I damn well choose.
