Previously, it was a parcel subject to flooding by the Nagawara Lake. Rice was grown there up to mid-90s.
PERIOD OF TIME: It’s been there for 15 years.
POPULATION: About 70 people, 16 house-tents + 8 concrete houses (+-30 people)
PLACES OF ORIGIN OF ITS INHABITANTS:
They normally come from rural areas, from the regions of Chitradurga (e.g. Challekere town), in the center of the state of Karnátaka, the region of Bulgarga, from the Northern region of the same state and from towns nearby Anathapura in Andha Pradesh. E.g. Kanekal or Rayadurga.
The whole family works, including 14 years old children.
FACILITIES: There is 1 water intake at the entrance of the parcel. For tent dwellers, the water intake is open for 2 hours every 2 days and the families can get at least two pitchers (20L). This amount of water is not enough, so they ask for more at the nearby apartments. Some of them provide tap water or drinking water for free while others sell “drinking water” for 2 Rs per pitcher.
There is no electricity: some tents have small solar panels (20x20cm) with a small battery that lights a bulb and in some cases an electrical outlet.
There is no toilet and they shower outdoors.
TYPE OF BUILDINGS: Wooden structure tents (Lingu) and Bamboo which is divided into several rods tied with fabric or coconut bands. They are covered on the exterior with plastic (several layers) and secured with a rope tied to stakes also made with Bamboo and rocks.
Lingu wood: 100 Rs/ 6 meter trunk
Bamboo: 600 Rs/ 6 meter pieces. One is enough for the job.
Dirt floor with a layer of diluted cow dung or a thin layer of concrete.
Peripheral rain protection also made of dirt or concrete slab, about 15cm high.
Wooden and aluminum door (deployed oil carafes) or doors made of plastic sheeting, when available.
Kitchen: Made of rocks or concrete blocks stacked in ½ meter high L-shape.
The houses that have been there for several years have a covered porch at the entrance for cooking.
GRACE’S WORK THROUGH THE NGO IN THE AREA:
She offers pre-primary education for children: there is a tent where she teaches to children of the different families who live there until they are 8 years old. The teacher is part of the NGO staff.
Every day classes are given from 9:30 to 13:00 and they are fed at noon, the food is given by a nearby restaurant.
MAIN PROBLEMS OF THE PLACE:
Excessive hot weather and lack of ventilation during summer.
Difficulties to cook during rainy seasons, they cook inside and the smoke causes many problems. The houses have no ventilation.
Poor and rationed water, it is far away from the houses.
Outdoor shower with no privacy, it mainly affects women because they are very shy to show their body in their culture.
Polluted urban canals. Excessive amount of mosquitoes.
Lack of sun light inside the houses during the day.
As we have read in the beginning, there are 8 houses made of concrete, this shows quite another reality here, there are houses built by the owner's brother, with connection to the urban power grid (with counter) with a shared bathroom (4 bathrooms for 8 houses) and with shower and kitchen inside the house. What resembles more to the rest of the settlement is that they don’t have running water so they store it in pitches and tanks, but with one difference, they can get water daily due to a dwell.
They pay between 2000 and 5000Rs per month plus a bail of 10000Rs.
People living in these houses also have different jobs: construction worker, seamstress, electrician, carpenter, truck driver…
