The eye fired and he moved, and a corner of his cloak caught the edge of the gaze and went to stone, dragging at his shoulder, and he had to shake the dead weight of it off mid-stride and get behind the next column before the thing could correct. The grey figure stood at the dead center of the ring through all of it, the petrified thing he'd come down to dig out, and Trevor worked the floor around it the way you work around any fixed thing in a fight — one more piece of the room that wouldn't move.
How to recover fic deleted from AO3 that’s NOT on the Wayback machine
Sharing this because I just found out about this and it blew my mind.
The short version of it is: The Wayback Machine is not the only backup/archive of AO3 content out there. It’s just the most user-friendly and immediately browsable.
THIS database on Archive.org contains most AO3 fics as text files, including plenty that are not Waybacked: https://archive.org/details/AO3_final_location
What you’ll need: A browser for .sqlite3 files such as DB Browser for SQLite, an archive manager (e.g. WinRar or 7zip), good internet download speeds, and potentially a LOT of free GBs in storage space.
Not needed but heavily recommended: A download manager such as HTTP Downloader (so you don’t lose the entire download the second your internet stutters).
1. Click here to get to the archive’s files. It’s going to look something like this:
ao3_current.sqlite3 and ao3_old_files.sqlite3 are metadata files. The .zip files contain fic, most of them in simple .txt format. The metadata files tell you which fic is in which zip.
The “current” metadata file is recent backups. The “old” metadata file seems to be fics archived until 2020ish.
2. First, download either ao3_current.sqlite3 or ao3_old_files.sqlite3. Now launch DB Browser for SQlite, then File > Open Database Read-Only > open the sqlite3 file. Now click on the Browse Data tab.
3. It’s going to look like this.
4. The “Filter in any column” field can be used for keyword searches in, well, any column of this table. Be warned, it takes a while to update, give it time, it’s indexing.
5. Here I searched for all fic which gets a hit for the “Avengers” keyword (usually fandom). You can also search for a specific title, author, description, etc.
Let’s try to locate the first fic on the list. Click on the field on the left - row 1, column 1.
On the right you’ll see the full content of that cell. The most important thing here is the start - ao3_01. This means that the fic is located in ao3_old_files_part01.zip.
6. Download ao3_old_files_part01.zip and open it with your archive manager. It’s 5.5 GB. This will take some time.
7. There are multiple ways to find the fic within the zip file. Probably the easiest way is to use your archive manager’s search/find function to locate the fic by keyword - author is a good bet here, or title if it’s unique enough - and extract that. This way you don’t have to extract the entire archive. Be sure to add a wildcard operator (*) on either side of the keyword.
8. Extract the file and you’re done. Note: It will probably be in .txt format, and might be in one giant block of text. Just select-all and paste it to a proper word processor to restore the paragraph formatting.
+ I suppose if you’ve got like a free TB of space you could just skip the metadata step and download all the zip files and unzip them and use a command line search tool for keywords, too. This will work with keywords like title, author and fandom that are part of the file title. The metadata file just contains additional info, like character fields, description, etc.
This isn’t a perfect remedy, there are still fics that got deleted before they could get archived here. But it seems more complete than the stuff on the Wayback Machine on average.

After burning his fingertips several times, Trevor managed to get a fire going. A few sparks hit the neat pile of wood until smoke turned to flames. Just before the sun disappeared behind the threes, the three companions were alighted by bright flames.
“Excellemt, Belmont,” Alucard said. “Maybe now we might have dinner in a timely fashion.”
“Yes, if we just get it a bit larger, we can spit-roast you,” Trevor said.
“Hush, you two,” Sypha said. “I thought we agreed on no squabbling after sundown.”
The two men glared at each other with “fuck you” eyes but did not speak again. Sypha finished unpacking the mates she had brought at the last market they visited and kept saved away in her satchel.
“This should get us through the night,” she said.
The trio had found themselves deep in the woods. The next town they planned to pass through turned out to be further away than they thought, and after agreeing they were all too tired to travel through the night, they decided to set up camp. Thankfully, it was a clear and pleasantly cool summer night, and Alucard optimistically thought a night under the stars could do them some good.
Despite Trevor’s remarks, the crew spit-roasted the market meat on the fire instead of Alucard. They sat around the fire and ate with their bare hands and listened to the song of crickets and hoot of owls over their meal.
“Perhaps we should take turns keeping watching in the night,” Alucard said. “Make sure to wake the other if any wild animals approach us.”
“I doubt anything with common sense would come anywhere near you,” Trevor told the vampire.
“Bold words coming from someone who has traveled so far with me.”
“Why do you think I drink? I need beer to make such foolish decisions.”
“Aw, and I see I’m number one thousand of mistakes your beer has delivered to you in your life?”
“Boys, hush,” Sypha said. “No fighting over dinner, remember?”
Alucard looked at Trevor for a response. The hunter just grumbled and took another bite from his meat. The vampire chuckled. The last of the Belmont hunters, taking orders from a Speaker girl. It was almost adorable.
“Sypha wouldn’t even need to spend our precious coins on dinner if you did some hunting, Trevor,” Alucard said. He sucked the last bit of meat off his bone, then tossed it into the bushes. “You come from a line of hunters. Why not go out and catch us a rabbit, or a deer, or a bear to feed us?”
“I could ask the same thing of a creature with predatory instincts,” Trevor said. He flashed a look at Alucard. “Unless those pointy teeth are just for show.”
Alucard humphed and licked his tongue along his fangs.
“I could bring us dinner easily,” he said. “But I wouldn’t want to draw attention to ourselves with vampiric activity. No one, on the other hand, will mind a common hunter looking for game.” His golden eyes flashed. “Except, for an incompetent one, perhaps.”
Trevor gritted his teeth and flicked his eyes over to Sypha. He expected her to start nagging them again about fighting. But the Speaker met his eyes and shrugged.
“He does kind of have a point,” she said. “We have a budget for food, but…I wouldn’t mind cooking something wild if it meant we could save money.”
Trevor gave her a sharp look.
“Well, we’ve been traveling all day,” he said. He took the final bite of his meat and swallowed it. “I’m exhausted, so we can settle for our market meat tonight.”
“Oh, poor little hunter,” Alucard teased. He looked at Sypha. “Perhaps he’s not a hunter after all. Maybe he’s the first Belmont ever to be a man of prey.”
“Fuck off,” Trevor said.
Then, to his chagrin, Sypha joined in too.
“You’d make a cute running deer, wouldn’t you?” she said. She lifted two fingers by her forehead to resemble small horns. “Perhaps we could strip you down and make you run naked through the woods except for your fur coat. See how many hunters make you an animal.”
The Speaker and the vampire laughed. Trevor started to go red in the face.
“Any hunter who glances my way is getting his innards ripped out,” he said.
“Maybe an ordinary hunter would,” Alucard said. He gave Trevor a wicked grin. “But Sypha and I know you very well. I bet if it were just the two of us, we could entrap you easily.”
Trevor scoffed.
“You two would be the first to go,” he said.
“You’re always the hunter, rarely the hunted,” Alucard said.
“I bet the two of us could hunt you down easily,” Sypha giggled as she poked the fire.
Trevor snorted and spat on the ground.
“I’d like to see you both try,” he said.
He tossed the bone from his meat into the bushes. There was a sudden silence hanging between the group. Trevor looked at Sypha and Alucard. The Speaker and the vampire looked at Trevor, then looked at each other, then back at him.
“What?” Trevor asked.
There was some sort of silent communication passing between Trevor’s companions and it was driving him a little mad. Alucard spoke first.
“Perhaps we could,” he said. “Sypha and I, versus you.” He smiled. “You’ve got to leave your weapons behind. Animals don’t run around with swords and whips.”
“You can keep your clothes, though,” Sypha said with a grin.
Trevor what he was hearing. Were they…
“Make it on the count of three,” Alucard said.
Trevor quickly stood up. His eyes flicked around for the Morning Star, then his stomach dropped when he saw Sypha was holding it, having swiped it from his bag only a few feet away.
“This isn't funny you two,” Trevor growled.
“One…” Alucard said.
“I mean it, you two.”
“Two…” Sypha said.
“You’re just going to chase me through the woods like a bunch of—”
“THREE!”
On those words, Trevor took off bolting into the woods. Alucard and Sypha, laughing like schoolchildren, took off after him.
Trevor was a strong man and skilled fighter. But at the end of the day, he was only a slightly exceptional man. Without his weapons, he was much more vulnerable. Meanwhile, Sypha was a Speaker with ancient magic on her side, and Alucard was a creature of the night born with hunting instincts. Against the two of them, Trevor felt something few other Belmonts in history could say they felt: like prey.
Running over rocks, jumping over fallen trees, pushing through low-hanging branches and twigs. Trevor ran through the woods until he felt his lungs would give it. After a long day of traveling, he was too tired for this. But every time he glanced behind him, there Sypha and Alucard were, laughing like little ones after too many sugar cakes.
This was stupid. This was crazy and childish. But Trevor didn’t stop moving until he managed to scramble out of sight from his two pursuers. Once Sypha and Alucard were out of sight behind him, he skidded to a stop. Hands pressed to his knees, huffing every labored breath from his lungs.
He didn’t know why he took off. Maybe because they were after him before he had a chance to grab the Morning Star. But even then, he could have fought with his fists. He could probably take on Alucard, God knew he’d been tempted to many times. It was only his teeth that stood a major threat. But then there was Sypha. Trevor may have been bigger and stronger than the Speaker, but even strength had to bow to the power of magic.
Trevor froze when he heard a rustle in the bushes. His ears perked up. Please, let it be some deer or even a bear. Trevor was confident he could fight a bear. A bear couldn’t fly or send shockwaves through its hand, or poison you with a bite.
“There he is!” Sypha’s high-pitched squeal rang out.
Trevor immediately started running again. He glanced over his shoulder as he did, but he didn’t see anything but trees. This was madness. He heard Sypha loud and clear, but when he glanced around, no one was in sight. Where the fuck could they have—
Crash.
The weight of their bodies came falling down on Trevor. The trees. Sypha had been floating in the trees over him, with Alucard moving silently over the branches. They hadn’t been chasing behind him. They’d been chasing above him. Watching him glance over his shoulder like an idiot. Playing with their food.
Trevor struggled against them, but it was two against one. Sypha pinned his arms over his head while Alucard pinned his legs to the ground. Trevor swore and grunted and tried to push them off, but with no success.
“See?” Sypha said, hovering her gloating grin just over Trevor’s face. “Told you.”
Trevor growled and blew a strand of sweaty hair from his face.
“Fuck you both,” he said.
“No, don’t be such a sore sport,” Alucard tsked.
The vampire and the Speaker were giggling like childhood bullies. Trevor rolled his eyes, relenting just to end the nonsense.
“Glad you two had fun,” he grumbled. “Now will you get off me?”
Sypha smirked, and leaned down closer to Trevor’s face. This close, he could get a scent on her: Flowers and salt water from her trip down to the lake.
“Now, why would we do that?” she said.
“Does the lion just let go of the gazelle after he catches it?” Alucard said.
Trevor’s chest rose and fell, and suddenly he felt a strange energy in the air. The full moon draped itself across the small opening of the woods where the trio had found themselves. The air was warm but with a pleasant cool breeze. Trevor felt helpless with two bodies pinning him down. But for a man who spent his life on the defensive, being powerless between his two companions felt a certain way he wasn’t used to.
His face flushed pink as Alucard pinned a knee down on his thigh. Sypha traced a finger along Trevor’s face, moving a single strand out from between his eyes.
“We’ve hunted and caught you,” she whispered. “So, what should we do with our prey?”
There was a tone to Sypha’s voice. A kind that crept through whenever she was teasing Trevor about one thing or another. But now there was something…hungrier in it. And it wasn’t just her. Alucard had his golden eyes locked on Trevor from over Sypha’s shoulder, gleaming with something predatory. Their two heads blocked the full moon above.
And to Trevor’s confusion, it sent a spike of blood down between his legs.
“I agree, Sypha,” Alucard said. “Animals usually eat our prey, but that would be cannibalism for us. What’s the next closest thing humans have to eating each other?
“You’re…you’re not human,” Trevor said, cursing the way his voice trembled.
Alucard shrugged.
“Regardless,” he said. “We’ve caught you…so now we may consume you.”
Trevor froze still on the ground as Sypha and Alucard shifted above him. Alucard remained by his legs, hooking his arms under them to pull the Belmont closer. Sypha moved just over his head on her knees.
“What are you two doing?” Trevor asked.
“Doing what most wild predators don’t have the decency to do,” Alucard said. “Giving our prey pleasure rather than pain.”
Sypha took Trevor’s chin and forced him to look up at him. In the pale moonlight, her bright blue eyes seemed to glow. Trevor knew Sypha was beautiful. It distracted him sometimes. But looking at her now, he felt something close to a trance.
“Just lay still and let us take care of you,” she said.
She traced a finger along his stubbled cheek, seeming to read the confusion in his thoughts. Trevor felt small of a sudden, in a way he was not used to. He was the last hunter of the Belmont family. He was bred to be big and violent. To carry himself like a black bear everywhere he went.

Alucard, meanwhile, undid the buckle of his belt with one hand and pulled down Trevor’s pants with the other. The hunter felt a shivery chill on his thighs.
Alucard chuckled.
