Osomatsu thought he would be fine until the man stepped in front of the door. Instantly his blood went cold and he slowly looked up. Instantly he was kinda regretting that choice.

There was something terrifying of that stern face, the apathy on it. It reminded him immediately of–

“I-I-I….” Any of his usual replies are gone, his mind tricking and insulting him with fear. He doesn’t want to be here suddenly, and he’s scooting back and setting the Damn thing down, as if that would change anything.

His expression had quickly changed from a kid getting in trouble to one that was more actual fear, as though he expected some great retribution. His wings furled slightly, as thought to hide him from sight.

“Speak up,” The chef warned, a frown of irritation falling onto his face. 

“If you had the guts to steal from me, then just telling me why shouldn’t be so much harder.” Alex made no attempt to grab for the steak. He honestly didnt care if Osomatsu ate it at this point. Anything else would be wasting it now. 

“–I’m… not going to hurt you. I just want to teach you that you don’t have to steal from me.” Alex let a small smile creep onto his face, but it was a fake one.

He flinched at the warning, feeling a lump in his throat– fuck…

He just… Needed to tell the trust and home the guy didn’t get too angry, or not believe him. He knew the smile was fake, but acted as though he didn’t, forcing himself to seem less afraid.

“…Didn’t wanna take it, but–” he sighed. “M'Dad won’t feed me if I don’t bring enough stuff home, a-and its been a few days.” He kept his gaze away, slumping. “I can’t focus right, a-and he still won’t give me nothin’…” Then he stops, creeping back more.

“L-look M'sorry. I’ll leave it there and me-leave I just… Wasn’t thinkin’” he’d be the first to admit that, but he just wanted to eat, was that so bad?

“… You know…” Alex retrieved the plate the steak had been on and placed the meat back on said plate before sliding it over to Oso.  “Maybe if you help out here you could get a little something more than a steak thats already been served. If your own father doesn’t feed you, I’d be willing to let you work here for food. It’s not really legal I don’t think but if you need food…” The place was fairly understaffed. Even this little one to help out with small tasks would be of help.  Besides, Alex was cold and distant. Not heartless.

Osomatsu didn’t touch the plate, still nervous about eating it. He knew he shouldn’t have trusted humans, they always wanted something from him, especially the bigger ones. He forced a nod though, as though pondering it. He didn’t know how to feel honestly, but he did know he needed food either way, no matter how he felt about anything. So he nodded again.

“O-okay….” He agreed pretty quickly, unhappy.

Alex stared at Osomatsu for quite a while before gesturing to the plate again.  “Don’t pretend now to be picky about what you eat--I made that steak and it would upset me for it to go to waste. The chef even grabbed a fork and steak knife and set it on the plate before stepping back a little.

“--Don’t worry, it didn’t hurt.” Alex explained as he set down the chef knife and placed a towel around the area he’d hit to keep blood from getting anywhere. “If knives are sharp enough, you can hardly feel it when they go through. I... don’t usually make a mistake like this.”

“Aha…oh? Huh…uhh..” Mizi laughed nervously, as was the normal reaction for him whenever a stranger spoke to him. Did it really look like he was struggling that badly?

The restaurant was understaffed. 

Usually, as the executive chef, Alex would be taking his time with various out-of-kitchen tasks such as working out financial issues or planning for future improvements, but now? Now he was working almost all his waking hours in a combination of kitchen, front of the house, and planning tasks. The man didn’t really mind the work–it occupied his mind, at least. 

Alex was doing his rounds talking to tables (pretty much giving a quick ‘is everything good/do you need anything’ before going to the next table. A customer did have a problem with one of the steaks, much to Alex’s dismay, so he set right out on taking the “bad” one back to the kitchen and preparing a new one for the customer. 

He hated to waste food like this, but the customer had already had access to it. He couldn’t serve it again, and he didn’t really want to eat something his customer had already touched. 

Osomatsu saw his best chance when he heard someone complaining about their food, something about how it was cooked or whatever. Oh well, their little whines and complaints were his gain after all. He hated how wasteful people could be. If that was him he’d be overjoyed just to have something all together. People never understood what they had, and they never seemed to stop to consider people like him.

The halfbreed was quick to scurry further in, no one seemingly paying him any heed. He waited but a moment before following the man into the back a bit too eagerly. He hid as best as he could, not wanting to get caught. He was a pretty good thief, but he was hungry and tired, so he was also distracted.

When the man wasn’t looking the Dragon was quick to creep forward, grabbing the discarded steak and slowly backing up, trying to make a break for it.

Alex did catch sight of the little dragon scurrying in. He said nothing, instead going about his business.  It was when he grabbed the steak that Alex stepped in front of the door.  His face was stern and cold, as if he was indifferent to the sufferings of the other. In a way, he was indifferent. That didn’t mean the man was heartless. 

“Hey... were you going to pay for that steak somehow?” His tone, gentle and kind, did not fit his distant expression at all. 

“I’m open to negotiation. It’s not like I can serve it... but you see, I don’t like being stolen from. If you’d just asked I might have happily given food to you.”
