Maybe it's the fact that gaming is a medium that is only 40 or so years old?

Maybe it's something else?

We refer to 'retro' fashion, and we've been wearing clothes for quite some time now.

'Retro' for me refers to a time period where the fashion is now considered so outlandish that it positions itself into a new sub-genre. The synth-pop ballads that form 80s cop movies soundtracks can be considered retro, along with their mullets and pastel suits with shoulder pads bigger than an American footballers.

Early video games similarly had a specific look and sound due to graphical limitations at the time, but companies that are going back to that aesthetic - either for nostalgia, budget, or artistic reasons; create games that are filed into the same genre along side their original cohort: Retro.

Retro games to me aren't just anything pre-2005. For me, the word Retro conjures specific graphics, colour palettes, sounds and more importantly: Gameplay.
