Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there; I did not die
Anna gave a sigh of relief as be agreed with her, promised her he’d hide with her. They would be safe together. Maybe next battle, they could fight alongside each other. But not this one. Today was not that day. Trying to keep herself calm, she reached up and hugged her brother, letting the warmth soothe her nerves. ”Stay safe, Aidan. I mean it.” She murmured those words into the crook of his neck, savoring the moment. She had to keep telling herself that it was okay, that she would get another hug soon after this. He promised her. They were the Higgs siblings---survival seemed to be their middle names. They would walk through the fire and come out at the end alive. Aidan was stronger than her, better than her, and she knew he’d come out okay. “I love you too. But don’t get too sentimental.” She forced a small smile. “We’ll see each other soon.” And, with that, she turned to go find a familiar redhead, needing to warn her best friend.
Aidan wrapped his arms around her as soon as Anna hugged him. This time there was no hesitation, no awkwardness. He just embraced his sister, held her tight and savoured the moment. “You too,” he whispered back. He was scared. In that brief moment right before they let go, he felt fear but he braced himself against it. He had promised her and she had promised him. They would keep their word. So Aidan smiled at her and watched walk away in search of Lily. A moment, just one, because he could still hear Atalia's words.
Atalia's words still echoed inside Aidan's head as he run through the street of Hogsmeade as he looked for his sister, Scorpius and his friends, as he tried to warn people he could trust to be level-headed about this imminent attack and maybe, hopefully, limit a bit of the carnage that was going to happen. How much time did he have before all of it started? He wished he had asked her but it had seemed another waste of time. Time he didn't have.
If he had been a spiritual person, he would have thanked any divinity, spiritual force or entity, for letting him encounter his sister before it started. Selfishly, Aidan wanted to have Anna get to safety and for a moment he had considered it. He could have disapparated her out there, somewhere she would be safe, but he knew that just like him, his sister couldn't simply leave. I can't, he had said her when she had told him to leave. He couldn't and she couldn't. No matter how much they might have wanted to vanish sometime, they simply couldn’t. That was just how the Higgs siblings were made. He had accepted it, and with a heavy heart he had trusted his sister to look for her friends and keep herself safe.
His whole life, Aidan had only meant to protect her and he had done everything he had thought he could do towards that end. He couldn't say he had been all that successful. But he would still do everything for Anna, and that now came down to trust her, to let her save herself.
'I love you.' That was the most important thing he had to say to her, that he needed her to remember in case he didn't make it and so he made sure to say it.
But there was someone else he needed to find. Scorpius. So he made his way to Honeydukes where they had their appointment. It was meant to be a nice, silly day. He would have bought Pink Coconut Ice and Bolandi's Exquisite Crystallized Pineapple just to make another piña colada joke because he was that cheesy, but now he was going to tell Scorpius that another Death Eater attack was coming and more people would be hurt and die.
Only it all started before he made it there. The screams, the horror, and he had to fight his way to the shop, all the while praying that he wasn't too late, that someone else hadn't gotten to Scorpius. And at first his prayers seemed to have been answered. Scorpius was there, outside the shop, waiting. Aidan’s hand reached out for his but something was wrong with those beautiful blue eyes with their hidden green. Something was missing. Scorpius.
He had not seen many people under the Imperio but enough to know what this was, to know why Scorpius' hand lay dead in his—cold in a way Scorpius had never been before. Aidan let it go, wishing he didn't have to, wishing he wasn't taking those steps back from the one person he would always want to run towards.
And that was the thing... Aidan could not run away from Scorpius, could not leave him, not even while he was buried somewhere inside his body, his mind. Especially then. I can't, he had said to his sister when she told him to leave. I can't leave. So he stood there, defiantly.
It was possibly the most stupid decision ever, but when had Aidan Terence Higgs ever made a healthy life choice? And he could see it, this spark in Scorpius' eyes, then. His own eyes widened and he once again felt no fear and no doubt.
I love you. Ti amo. I trust you. I'm not going to leave you. It was the long list of things that his heart spoke to Scorpius in that moment, and he didn't waver even as he saw the wand being raised and pointed his way. Aidan nodded. Do it, I trust you.
The words left Scorpius' lips, magic surged from his wand and Aidan felt it touch him just as his body splintered.
'Hogsmeade isn’t safe… You should go, ' Atalia had told him.
‘You need to leave. Go,’ had been Anna’s words.
‘I can’t,’ it had been Aidan’s reply.
But now he had managed the one trick he had sought to master ever since he had been a child but could never quite accomplish.
Anna felt her agitation grow as he denied her. How could he not see that he was in much more danger than her? That she could do this easily if she knew he was safe. If he was gone. “And I can’t handle any of this knowing you’re a part of this battle. Sit this out, please.” Her voice was red hot, frustrated with him, but was still pleading. Part of her wanted to stand on the nearest tall thing, scream that there was going to be an attack. Evacuate people. Tell an auror. Something. Still, Aidan kept going on about Anna hiding, and she saw the opportunity to get something they both wanted in one fell swoop. “I’ll hide, okay. If that makes you feel better, I’ll hide.” She wasn’t sure whether she was lying to his face or not. She wanted to fight for what she believed in, but she also knew that she’d likely be killed if she tried today. She never was good with a wand. “But you have to come find me. You have to come and hide it out with me. I can’t do this without you, Aid.” It was the truth. The pair had been separated so long that she didn’t want to risk him being alone in all of this mess. “I’ve already lost my aunt. I’ve almost lost my father. I can’t lose you too. I’ll promise you I’ll hide if you promise to come find me, hide with me. I need you to live.”
Aidan was afraid they could never come to a middle ground, but then Anna found one for both of them. He nodded, right away. “I will,” he said, without hesitation. He didn't like the idea of not helping, but he told himself that once he found Scorpius, they could look for Anna and bring her to safety, and then come back and do the same for others. It would work. It had to because he was promising. “I promise. I just need to find Scorpius and the others.. warn them.. and I'll find you. I'll be back for you.” He had always tried not to make promises he couldn't uphold. He always stopped and thought if it was possible to keep it, but this time he was sure—never for a moment he thought he would not be able to come back to Anna. “I love you,” he said, because he needed her to hear it. “But I need you to be safe. Because I need you to live too.” To live and be happy. Aidan wanted so many wonderful things for his sister—a whole, full and happy life. “Deal?”
Yeah, Teddy really didn’t want to humiliate the villains for their beliefs. There was a way to teach everyone, if just given the chance, and it wasn’t by ruining their trust to you that you ave yourself that chance. “Prank-powers fuck yeah!” he therefore exclaimed and punched enthusiastically into the air. With the same enthusiasm he nodded at the idea of actually building a blanket fort out of this shirt. “I definitely will. I’ll send you pictures.” And he would. Promise. And then, simply because he could, he got up and put on the shirt, slipping it over his brightly coloured and many layered shirts and sweaters.
Aidan chuckled again as Teddy threw a fist into the air, and he felt a little less awkward. “Thank you,” he said, meaning it and thus still being awkward about it. And because he felt this was way too much touchy-feeling, he thought this would be a good moment to go. “I wish you luck with your project. Please don’t die.” He took his bag and got up again. “See you around.”
Anna felt her heart stop as soon as the word attack left his lips. No. There was no way this was happening to her again. New Year’s still seemed like only yesterday, and she’d only just started to feel okay again. To feel right in her own skin. And it was about to happen again. “How do you know this?” she asked, her voice weak and small in her throat. It felt unreal to hear those words, and, yet, looking up at her older brother with a look of pure terror, she knew it was true. “Screw me finding a safe place, Aidan. You need to leave. Go. Before anything happens.” Her words were hushed, frantic. She couldn’t lose him after losing so much already. “And I–I need to find Lily.”
“One of them warned me,” Aidan said, unsure if it was wise to make Atalia's name. He didn't want Anna to end up trusting their old friend and turn up betrayed once again. “I can't. I can't leave.” He could have lied, but he was trying to quit this bad habit of his. “Not knowing you are still here.” He wanted to argue, say she should leave now. He could have done it, disapparate the two of them out of here and bring Anna to safety. But they were so alike, weren't they? Neither of them could live knowing they had left others behind. “Okay, I need you to promise me something.” He looked at his sister with a steady and serious gaze. “You look for Lily, but as soon anything starts... you find a safe place and hide, wait it out. Promise me, Anna, please.”
Anna had made her way out of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, having spent well over an hour perusing the store. On her way to Honeydukes, she was pleasantly surprised when Aidan stopped her in her tracks. “Aidan, you’ll never guess what Hannifan helped me find–” she started, before trailing off and noticing the worried expression on his face. “Aid, what’s wrong? Is everything okay?”
Normally, Aidan would be more than annoyed that any of the Hannifan siblings had been anywhere near his sister. But today there were worst things than Rion's sleaziness, Jaxon's bad temper and.. who was the third Hannifan? Who cared? He stopped, shaking his head. “No, it's not. You need to get yourself somewhere safe,” he said, in haste. He kept glancing around, trying to understand how long they would have but it was difficult to assess—everything felt so normal and calm. His gaze went back to his sister. “Something is about to happen. I think it may be another attack,” he said, voice steady and far too serious. Part of him wanted to shout it, warn everyone, but a panic felt somewhat counterproductive right this moment.
“That’s the best kind of prank! Putting the villains in a superhero costume and showing them just how much more world likes them like that.”
And Aidan was all awkward and that made it even more amazing - not because Teddy liked other people being awkward, but because it showed that it did mean at least something to him, too. “Hell, yeah it’s large enough! I could use it in a blanket fort, don’t you think?” He held it up, still gazing at it with pure happiness written on his face.
Aidan chuckled, but he wasn't so sure that it would work on real, so-called, villains. “I'm more for making look ridiculous... which probably only make them hate the world more. So, yeah, it's good you have the prank-powers here.”
The awkwardness didn't leave right away but stayed, lingered in his glances, pose, hunched shoulders. “Never used t-shirts for blanket forts. Big scarves, yes. Shirts, never.” He shook his head. “But you could try it. Let me know if it work.” And he was awkward enough about it that he meant it. He still loved the idea of blanket forts and building safe places out of the weirdest things.
“You too,” she said sadly, watching him go. Atalia wasn’t sure when their lives changed, when they became the people they were instead of those giggling fourth years that she so fondly remembered. “Maybe I’m selfish for doing this,” she whispered to herself. Maybe she put other people’s lives at risk just so she could keep those closest to her safe–without any regards to what happened to anyone else. She watched Aidan disappear into the crowd, the beginning of an apology on the tip of her tongue. She bit her lip and shoved her hands into her pockets, turning to search for Levi.
Your time is running out, Aidan. Those were Atalia's words. How much time he didn't know. He only knew he needed to find Anna and Scorpius and all the others, to warn them. How much time had Atalia bought him? A few minutes? Half an hour? More? Much less? All questions answered, there had not been the time, and now Aidan was running. He knew where Scorpius would be and while he made his way there he searched for his sister. “Anna,” he called, hoping he could find her. And for a moment he thought to have seen her. “Anna,” he called again, making his way to her, hand reaching out to her shoulder.
Atalia wanted to tell him how wrong he was about her father, that the way he loomed over her family made him seem much more like a monster than an actual human, but she didn’t want to burden him. She didn’t want to sound like she was making excuses for her actions. Atalia balled her fists and tried to keep a stoic look as he questioned her.
“Don’t ask me that,” she said quietly, though still strongly. She didn’t know how she could do it–how she could hurt people and pretend like it wasn’t effecting her, but it was just the way she was raised. “I can only tell you this. I’m doing it to protect the people I care about, so go tell whoever you want, but do it quickly because your time is running out, Aidan.” She turned to check the clock tower and noticed that they only had about twenty minutes left and she still needed to find Levi and warn him of the impending attack. Atalia swallowed thickly and turned to face her old friend. “If we’re done here,” she said harshly. “There’s a few people I’d like to warn.”
“But I am asking you that, and you should too.. before is too late.” Aidan fought the horrible feeling that it could already be too late. But time was running out. He knew it even before she looked at the clock tower. There were so many things he wanted to tell her, but he knew this was not the time nor place to do it. He could only hope they would get another chance. “We'll talk later. Just...” He didn't know what to wish for here. He didn't want her to die, but the thought was there—how many will die because of Atali? “Be careful.” He sighed and made to go look for Anna and Scorpius and all the others.
I knew they would kill me when they found out, but…” He struggled for words, releasing a sharp breath. “I think I realized that I would rather die because I betrayed them, than live because I betrayed you.
