Steve Harrington x Hargrove!Reader. Billy Hargrove x Sister!Reader
Summary: Thereâs a new girl in town and running into Steve Harrington is the least of her problems.
Warnings: Swearing, Mentions of abuse
Notes: This is my new series!! This is going to be a season 3 rewrite with the reader and Iâm so excited to start it!
A smile stretched across her face as her feet pounded against the shiny mall floor underneath her. Security called after her, pushing adults and children over in a futile attempt to catch up to the newest citizen of Hawkins.Â
The offending object was clenched in her hand, the tag still dangling off of the pair of designer sunglasses, letting everyone know exactly what kind of person she was.Â
She dove into the nearest shop, the air conditioning hitting her fast and providing sweet relief from the heatwave that had decided to hit the town today of all days. Even her ponytail couldnât save her from the sweat dripping down her back. She slid over the counter, ignoring the shock on the clerkâs face, the man dressed as a sailor staring down at the crouched shoplifter, finger drawn to her mouth.Â
Y/N glimpsed around the corner, making sure that security had disappeared before jumping up to face the clerk she had spooked earlier.Â
âSorry about thatâ Y/N smiled, ripping the tag off the sunglasses. âThanks for not saying anything,â
The college-aged kid shrugged, âItâs no big deal, I mean, Iâve seen weirder.â
She chuckled, offering her hand, âIâm Y/N, Iâm uh, new here I guess you would sayâ
Before the clerk could introduce himself, a window slid open behind him, the hand belonging to a slender woman with short blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.Â
âNice to meet you Y/Nâ She smiled, âIâm Robin and that dingusââ she pointed toward the now exasperated employee, âIs Steve Harrington.â
âYou know you couldâve left the introduction to meâ Steve shot back, running his hands through his ridiculously fluffy hair.Â
Robin let out a huff, âSorry, I was busy doing your job.â
Y/N watched as Steve shot a disdainful look at Robin before turning back to her. âItâs okayâ Y/N smiled at the attractive pair before being interrupted by the annoying beeping in her back pocket. âI uh, have to head out anywayâÂ
She glanced at the pager her Aunt had insisted she bring with her at all times, the annoying device reminding her that her Aunt fully expected her to be on time for dinner despite there being two hours before the anticipated affair.
âThanks for the coverâ Y/N smiled, throwing the glasses on her face before sending one last glance at the pair of employees.
âNo problemâ Robin replied, cutting off Steve, who rolled his eyes.Â
The ice cream clerk called after her, âSee you around! Maybeâ
Y/N chuckled once again, a smile widening on her face as she struts out of the mall, the encounter already forgotten as she climbed into her car.
She really did not understand why her family had decided to move to Hawkins. The town was hot, small, and empty.Â
It felt like one giant suburb, with the mall the only remaining piece of modern civilization slam dunk in the middle.
She missed the feel of Indianapolis, the bright lights and screams coming from the racetrack, going out to football games when there was nothing else to do.Â
She missed the crowds and nightlife.
Although she supposed she should be grateful that Hawkins had one bar that refused to card.Â
She missed being able to disappear amongst the people.Â
Here she stood out like a sore thumb. In Indianapolis, no one would look twice at her if she had just moved there. But here it was suspicious.Â
Here she had shopkeepers eyeing her every movement, people watching the new girl like an exotic creature at a zoo.Â
The bright blue car door slammed shut behind her.Â
âThere you areâ Her Aunt called, cigarette close to falling out of her mouth. âDo you know what time it is?!â
Y/N threw a quick smile at her guardian, âI had a great day, thanks for asking Auntie.â
Evie shook her head at her niece, one of her hair rollers coming loose. âYou were supposed to be home as soon as I paged,â
Y/N rolled her eyes, âSorry Auntie, but unless you want me to be arrested, I have to follow the speed limit here.â She crossed her arms, bitterness exhaling from her as she recalled her first run-in with the police.Â
Youâre going too fast, the bulky man had said. He let her off with a warning because she was new in town, but that wouldnât last very long.
Evie took another drag of her cigarette, shaking her head in disappointment as she retreated inside the house, âGet ready, we have to leave by 6:30â She ordered her niece.
Y/N smiled tightly before following the nicotine addict into the overheated house. There was precisely one air conditioning unit in the entire house, and it did little more than cool down the one couch it hovered over.Â
She stepped into the bathroom, the cool tile providing sweet relief to her bare feet, sneakers forgotten by the front door.Â
The tri-fold mirror provided her with a better look at her wild curls, frizzy from the exposure to what little humidity existed in Hawkins.Â
Her clothes peeled off like saran wrap, the sticky sensation lasting long after she turned on the showerhead, ice-cold droplets hitting her sweat covered back. She shivered, the sensation relieving her growing irritation with the town. If she could actually call it that.
It was more like a perpetual suburb.
She couldnât believe Billy had gone along with the move. Y/N knew her brother, and she knew that Billy wouldâve fought tooth and nail to remain in California. That is if her father was anything more than a piece of shit abuser.
She shut the water off, embracing the comfort of the fluffy towel as she bolted to her room. Boxes surrounded her, each filled with memories of her previous life. Memories of her mother.Â
She fluffed her wet hair, the remains of her shower dripping onto her shirt, only stopped by her hands scrunching the gel into the hair follicles, the gesture soothing the anger curling in her stomach.
By the time her hair had dried, her Aunt had been calling for her for over ten minutes. The sneakers loosely tied around her ankles pounded against the cement driveway as she refused to say anything toward the woman who drove.
The ride to Billyâs was long and arduous, filled with incessant chatter and dread. Y/N wouldâve been fine if she never had to see her father ever again.Â
But then she thought about Billy and how she had left him behind. Would he even want to see her? She had failed as an older sister.Â
She had left him with her father.
âY/F/Nâ Her dadâs raspy voice held a hint of sincerity. Fear rushed to her throat.âSo good to see you again. I wanna introduce you to someone.âÂ
A smiling redhead appeared from behind Neil, an eager look on her face, âHi, Iâm Susan, itâs so nice to meet you.â
Y/N reluctantly shook the womanâs hand, grip limp. Her voice was too perky, too bright.Â
Momâs was always soft and warm, Y/N recalled, comparing the woman before her to the late Minnie Hargrove.Â
She caught sight of a younger redhead further in the house, a skeptical expression written upon the girlâs face. Y/N smirked inwardly.Â
This girl looked how she felt.
The dinner passed with hardly any incident until Y/N asked the question that was at the forefront of her mind.Â
It was an innocent enough question, but the dark look that crossed Neilâs face told her that she had turned the conversation sour.Â
âHeâs off on a date,â Susan replied instead, her fearful expression replaced with a plastered smile that refused to meet her eyes. The eyes that kept flickering over to the man beside her.Â
âYou know you donât have to take this right?â Y/N brought up, the table freezing.
âIâm not sure what you mean?â Susan asked, feigning innocence.
Evie brought her hand to her nieceâs, âY/N donâtâ her aunt warned softly. The same tone her mother used to use when trying to convince Neil not to hit them.
âY/F/N doesnât know what sheâs talking aboutâ Neil patronized, warning in his eyes, âSheâs still adjusting to Hawkins.â
Her fork clanged against her plate, âHow many times has he hit you today?âÂ
âHow many times?â
Susan chuckled nervously, âagain, I donât know what youâre talking aboutââ
âBullshitâ Y/N interrupted.
Gasps emitted from the table, Neilâs towering figure standing up at the interjection. âApologize to Susan, now.â
Y/N stood up with him, sunken eyes boring into his darkened ones. When she was younger she may have had to take this. But not anymore.Â
She left. Abandoning her food, she retreated outside, plopping herself on the steps of the porch, ignoring the irritation bubbling inside her.Â
âToo manyâ A voice called from the door.Â
âWhat?â Y/N asked, turning around to face the owner of the new voice.Â
The smaller redhead spoke up, âYou asked how many times. Too many to count.â
The girl plopped down next to her, a somber expression on her face. âThatâs why Billy doesnât come home for dinner anymore. Because if heâs around then he takes the brunt of it.â The childâs bright blue eyes met Y/Nâs, fear swirling in them. âIâm Max by the way. Iâm uh your stepsister I guess.â
Y/N nodded, guilt weighing down her chest. âI was your age when we left.â She admitted, recalling the events. âMy Mom couldnât take it anymore, so she took me and went to live with her sister.â
âWhy didnât she take Billy too?â Max asked, curiosity rife in her eyes.Â
Y/N exhaled, the guilt growing bigger at hearing the question sheâd been asking for the past nineteen years. âI donât know Max. I donât know.â
Silence passed between the two stepsiblings as they stared up at the star-studded sky. Somber looks entrenched on both of their faces.Â
âYou wanna go to the Mall tomorrow?â Y/N asked, hoping to cheer the girl up.Â
Max smiled, hope replacing fear. âIâd like that a lot.â
Y/N smiled back, a wide smile, something she hadnât done in a long time. âGood, I can show you all the great places to lift from.â
âLift?â Max asked, eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
The two girls sat on the porch for the rest of the night, Y/N explaining her favorite pastime to the curious girl, while Max ranted about her group of friends, and how one idiot managed to piss her off more than the others.
Y/N smiled, warmth filling her chest. Maybe Hawkins wouldnât be so bad after all.
Iâm so excited to start this series! These are going to be much longer and not as ship focused, but Iâm really happy to start writing this! I hope you all enjoy it!
