Why You Ground And Center
-To release pent up/excess energy before a ritual (or just in daily practice, as needed) -To release overwhelming emotions -To gain energy if youâre depleted -To help yourself connect to the earth -To balance your energy
How To Ground And Center
-Stand, sit, or lay, on the ground. Outside is preferable but honestly your carpeted floor works too (just sometimes takes longer to feel the earth). Just make sure your palms or feet are connected to the earth. -Slowly take a deep breath, hold your breath for 3 counts, and SLOWLY release. Do this three times (or as many as it takes to feel your body relax). -You can chose to light incense or put on relaxing musicâwhatever is relaxing to you. Itâs not necessary, but since music does help our moods and thoughts, it might be good to put on something positive sounding, or even nature sounds, IF you chose to use music. -To release energy: imagine your hands (or feet) growing roots into the ground, digging deep into the cool, dark earth. When you feel connected (trust me the energy feels SO good, but kinda weird because itâs not âyoursâ) push your pent up/excess energy through the roots in your hands and dripping into the earth. Donât drain yourself! When you feel âcalmâ STOP. If you give too much youâll end up light headed and fuzzy! -To receive energy: Do the same as above only this time imagine the energy from the earth coming into your roots. STOP when you feel energized and âawakeâ. If you take too much you wonât be able to concentrate on your spell or ritual your about to do. -To release overwhelming emotions: Follow the same steps as above, only instead of your energy, give your emotions to the earth if theyâre too overwhelming for you (like sadness or anger). The earth may even offer a comforting energy back. -To balance your energy: Follow the same steps as above (breathing, having your hands or feet touching the earth) only imagine your energy going down the roots from your feet/hands and then callâin your mindâthe earth to you. Feel the earths energy rise up through your hands and into your body along with your own, fixing what needs fixing, balancing what needs balancing with your spirit and your actual body. Personally I lay down for this. When things feel ârightâ let the earth energy subside -When finished with your grounding and centering, take your time to slowly open your eyes and stir your body slowly. Then, THANK THE EARTH. )O( Blessed Be )O(
I believe...
⊠in energy. In intention. In prayer. I believe in love, loss, anger, and happiness. All of these things are powerful in their own right, and give off powerful energies as a result. Energies that fuel the beliefs of the masses. I believe in deities. Not in a single pantheon, but in all pantheons. As long as a god or goddess has a following, a group of individuals who shower that deity in love and prayer, that deity will be present. A living, breathing thought-form, given power through the intentions of millions. No single god or pantheon is right or wrong. All are valid, from the Kemetic gods and goddesses of far-away sands, to the Celtic deities of the rolling highlands. From the African deities of the arid plains to the Norse deities of the frigid north. And from the Christian God on his heavenly throne, to the Hellenic gods perched on their Mount Olympus. I consider all of these pantheons, and all the numerous others, to be as real as any other. The beliefs in the more pagan deities may have waned with the rise of the more prominent religions, but as long as these old gods and goddesses are being fueled by our thoughts and prayers, they will never be forgotten.

Patron Deities
âHow do I find my patron deity?â is a question that echoes throughout the pagan communities on Tumblr and elsewhere. What doesnât seem to get discussed very often on Tumblr is what having a patron deity entails.  Itâll be different with every deity and devotee, of course, depending on the deityâs personality and the nature of the original culture in question.  The dynamics of a patronship with a Kemetic god versus an Irish god versus a Hellenic god are not the same; this previous post demonstrates a bit of that. And thatâs just three people in a community of thousands!
Just to be clear, Iâm speaking as an Irish polytheist and someone with a strong sensitivity to power dynamics, so much of what Iâve said is influenced by those things. Iâm coming from a specific tradition with a specific background. Others will have different opinions and experiences, as evidenced by that first link above. Donât take my words as fact, only as one personâs opinion.
So whatâs a patron deity? Historically, a deity was a patron of an organization or concept rather than an individual. Ex: Athena was the patron of Athens, so while she may provide assistance to an Athenian by virtue of their citizenship, her ultimate concern would have been the welfare of the city as a whole. A private citizenâs welfare probably would have been secondary. Clergy may have dedicated their whole lives to a specific deity, but this wouldnât have made the deity their patron per se.Â
I donât know when the idea of patronship became âprivatizedâ and so widespread, but I honestly donât care except in how it pertains to our relationships to the gods right now. Why are we looking for own personal patron deities? Is it because we want to feel like special snowflakes handpicked by a god? Maybe the individualistic, experiential nature of contemporary neopagan/polytheist practice makes this the next logical step in our religious practices? Or is it because we have a powerful longing to feel such a deep connection with the divine?
The more I think about the term, whatever it meant historically, the more it seems appropriate: a patron gives support and resources, and the recipient uses them to create something of use for themselves of the community that also brings honor to the patronâs name. Thereâs practicality and, most importantly, reciprocity. Thereâs an exchange of promises made, implicit or explicit, and opportunities to demonstrate oneâs reliability and earn respect, which in turn deepens the trust in the relationship and thus the power of help and action being exchanged.Â
Nowadays, I define it as the deity (or deities) for whom you spend the bulk of your time and energy and whose aid/guidance/support/etc you rely on most. Though perhaps not the only one, theyâre your primary teacher and challenger, guardian and adversary. Â At the end of the day, theyâre the one hooked deepest in your heart. Â YMMV, however - itâs different for many people. But first, a reminder:
You donât need to have a patron deity to be a polytheist or pagan.
The question of godspouses, godslaves, and godshards are more complicated and beyond the scope of what Iâm talking about here, which is the more common standard of worship or veneration. The following are the things I personally believe to be most important in regards to patron deities (and a million thanks to River Devora, who gave me the words I didnât have for some of these):
Consider why you want a patron deity in the first place. Bragging rights? Better back off for a while and grow up, then. Guidance? Support? Much more substantial. A mix of everything? Well, weâre only human, and Iâm cool with ulterior motives behind the altruistic ones as long as theyâre kept in check. Pride goeth and all that.
Understand your motives.  You know that trope where one protagonist is hiding something from another protagonist and it gets revealed at the worst possible moment and everything gets cocked up, and it wouldnât have been nearly so bad if theyâd just been honest at the beginning?  Donât do that. Shadow work is meant to help you better understand yourself, which may mitigate getting blindsided by something you didnât know about yourself or trying to keep a secret that negatively impacts your relationship when it inevitably gets discovered.  This doesnât mean you should just spill everything, but be straightforward, even if itâs to say, âI donât want to talk about that right now.â Know your mind, basically. Itâs a form of protection and, in some cases, a weapon.
Carefully consider the deityâs nature and what youâre looking for.  Some deities are more concerned for the âbigger pictureâ than your personal welfare.  My relationship with na MorrĂgna, for example, is very clearly one of service to my community, whereas my relationship with Anpu is much quieter and turned inward. Also, letâs say youâre a pacifist; would a deity of war be someone you want to spend time with? This isnât so straightforward, since there are things a pacifist can learn from such a deity or things a warrior can learn from a deity of peace, but itâs still something to consider. Also, deities arenât one-sided but multifaceted. You might find that you get something out of the relationship that, from the outside, seems strange or even counterintuitive. (I know a healer devoted to the MorrĂgan, for example.) But strong relationships are conducive to seeing more subtleties and nuances, and they can inspire the people involved to do more for one another than they might otherwise do for a mere acquaintance.
The relationship should be balanced. You have rights. You have boundaries that should be respected. Even a surrendering of power should be by choice, as in sacred D/s. Being mortal is absolutely not the same as being inferior and, in many ways, is a greater power in itself.
The relationship should be reciprocal. Donât take and not give anything in return of equal value. On the other hand, donât give without receiving anything in return.
Trust your intuition. Probably one of the hardest things, honestly. Practice divination. Consult a trusted diviner or clergy person. âStudyâ your own self to figure out what is you and what is not. Be discerning, but remember that youâll have to take a leap of faith and trust yourself - and the gods - sooner or later.
Oaths must be honored. Be very, very careful about any promises you make. You will be held to them, one way or another - and if not in this life, then possibly the next. Better to start out conservatively, maybe with a trial period, rather than swear everything you are to a deity with whom you donât have much experience. Thereâs no race to any kind of finish line. Do your research about the deity, its originating tradition, and yourself.Â
Deities arenât PokĂ©mon. You might find yourself dealing with a variety of entities as time passes: deities, ancestors, animal and land spirits, fae, whatever. But having a big inventory doesnât automatically make you better, and I believe that you should only deal with as many entities as is practical. Is there a reason to deal with this entity? Do you have the time and energy to maintain a relationship with them in addition to the others? Better to have strong relationships with fewer than shallow ones with many.
Deities arenât interchangeable or there to be âused.â Thereâs a reason deities revealed themselves when they did to the culture or people they did, and those interactions established a precedent. Even if youâre a soft polytheist or atheopagan, even if youâre eclectic or practicing multiple paths, they should be treated with respect as individuals, not novelties or tools or fill-in-the-blanks.
Not being âtappedâ does not invalidate your worship, veneration, or belief. Not everyone gets called to a deity, and thatâs perfectly fine! Â Hell, that can be a blessing sometimes. Â Choosing a deity yourself and putting in the work to build that relationship is just as valid.
Not having a âgodphoneâ does not lessen your value as a worshiper or polytheist. Some of us simply donât experience our deities as clearly, as often, or in the same ways as others. Sometimes never. Thatâs okay.Â
Basically be conscientious, self-aware, respectful, knowledgeable, and practical, at least until you guys sort out what works for you. Donât rush or half-ass it. Seriously, the gods have been around for a while, theyâre not going to disappear next Thursday.

Banishing Negative Energy & Energy Vampires Spell Work
Hey yâall! Currently on a trip, which is why I havenât really posted too much, but I wanted to share a spell Iâve had to use on the trip. Iâve been uncharacteristically exhausted every day, even after getting 11+ hours of. A quick realization that it wasnât actually my fault, rather that it was the effects of an energy vampire nearby stealing my energy by imposing their negative energy onto me, I found myself jumping into witchy mode. This spell is time efficient and can take as low as 15 minutes, and is accessible for spoonie witches, college witches, and low budget witches. In this spell I use crystals, but you can use whatever you usually use to protect you and give you energy.
-Place all stones around you in a layered semicircle, with the open part facing you. Keep you protective stones in part of the semicircle closest to you. As you redirect your protective stones, say (verbally or nonverbally) what you want the stone to assist you with I used +Black Obsidian +Hematite +Citrine +Black Tourmaline +Pyrite +Kyanite After doing this, follow up with a hot shower, or cleanse yourself with nearby water/ oil. Upon doing so, your magic and its intentions will be sent into the universe to be constantly replenished as needed.
I find myself struggling to break the indoctrination from when I was a christian. I don't believe what I do is evil but i still get guilty because some stupid book written so long ago told me not to. I hate it.
You are not alone. Many, I dare say most, pagans were born into Christian households and raised Christian in one form or another. Even those of us that werenât, more often than not, grew up in Christianized nations with Christian values as the ânormalâ and were influenced that way. I was a Catholic for 20 years and a few years outside the church does not undo 20 years of hardcore programming.
The trick, I think, is to accept your past and grow into the person you want to be. I have nothing against Christianity, in fact I think it is a beautiful religion, but that is not who I am anymore. I have grown to love myself and love the world. Focus on loving yourself and your path. Grow, love, learn.
~>Wyrd
Itâs okay to be resentful. I am still resentful, deep inside, about my Christian roots and how I was conditioned as a child. If you never fully let go of your resentment toward Christians, thatâs okay. Sometimes I wonder if Iâll ever be able to let it go. However, donât let your resentment impede your ability to move forward. You are aware of your beliefs that were drilled into you instead of accepted by you, and now you can slowly start to let go of those beliefs and embrace ones that jive with you. And while it is perfectly okay to be resentful of your upbringing, there are good Christians in the world. There are. If you need to talk through anything, hit me up on my blog (@crystalizedforest).

Sick to death
Of watching people bad mouth emoji spells and technopaganism. Life changes. Magic changes. It is mutable. It can be used in a plethora of ways, and just because those ways do not align with âold and ancient and moldyâ things doesnât make it wrong.
Like science, magic is ever evolving and changing. How we use it is ever evolving and changing. Just because someoneâs practices arenât filled with noxious plants and asthma attack inducing pollen carriers doesnât make it less powerful. Why?
Because in the end, magic is about intent and will, and you have no idea the intent and will of that technopagan, that spoonie witch, that non-nature worshiping pagan. Just because their means are not yours does not mean their intent and will is weaker, and such underestimations are dangerous. Learn some respect for your fellow witches to go alone with the respect you have for trees and rocks.
