The American election is first-past-the-post, which means that there are only two possible outcomes: either the Democrat candidate wins, or the Republican candidate wins.

When election season rolls around, your voting choices make one of three statements:

I would prefer the Democrat to the Republican.

I would prefer the Republican to the Democrat.

I don't care; I choose to let everyone else make this decisions for me.

Anything other than voting for one of the two parties that might win is choosing option 3, whether it's refusing to vote, voting third party, writing in something else, etc.

It's a shitty system, to be sure, and I dearly wish we'd switch to any of the numerous better voting systems, but in the US, at least, it's the system we're currently stuck with. Anyone telling you to vote third party or to not vote at all is asking you to sit back and let everyone else decide whether we put someone like Trump in power again.
