Charles Hawthorne taught painting classes in Provincetown, Massachusetts, for thirty summers. His system of working in subtle color patches influenced many students, including Edwin Dickinson, who studied with Hawthorne between 1912 and 1914. Compare the work of the student and his teachers in “Between Nature and Abstraction: Edwin Dickinson and Friends,” on view through Feb 10.

Ancient Egyptian statuette (cupreous metal with precious metal inlay) of Imhotep, chancellor to the 3rd Dynasty pharaoh Djoser and architect of Djoser’s step pyramid, who was later worshiped as a deity.  Artist unknown; ca. 664-30 BCE (Late Period or Ptolemaic).  Now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
