dear everyone on tumblr who needs to host images elsewhere (e.g. to embed on ao3 etc), please give squidge a go!! it's free, it's nonprofit and it's geared towards fandom so nsfw images won't get deleted!! and please stop using imgur if you can because they blocked the uk rather than acquiesce to the fucking internet safety laws, which I can't really hold against em but it does mean all imgur pictures just show up as big purple boxes now
Squidge! Holy blast from the past, Batman. The last time I remember even looking at that site was... eons ago.
( Oh, what was I reading? The Quartz Key. Yes, it's m/m. )
Not only is Squidge still around, it's expanded and grown! It is still run by the same guy, though now it's a nonprofit with a board and everything, and while they maintain all the old squidge sites as static archives, they have a new multifandom archive using the AO3 code at squidgeworld.org. They also host podfics and fanart.
For those younguns in the crowd, back in the day erotic fanworks--especially slash--was not welcome very many places. Walter was willing to host it, and has been a haven for NSFW fanworks since 1994. The various archives and so on hosted at squidge.org were never very large, compared to lots of other archives, but they were a necessary part of the fannish ecosystem, and I'm really glad that there is now a structure in place to keep the whole system running beyond just "Walter's a great guy willing to donate lots of time and money." Walter is a great guy! but like. it's good to have other people to help out and keep things going in the long run.
Don Bluth only knew how to draw one man, but dammit he wasn’t gonna let that stop him.
To be fair, he knew how to draw two men
If a person's friends are racist and they don't care because it doesn't impact them or they try to reframe their buddy's racist behavior as something else, they are also racist, okay? 🫶
Also if your friends are saying racist, antisemitic and otherwise heinously weird things about people, you may want to consider just not being their friends instead of just sending anons to the people they're talking about. 🫰
Not only is it okay to stop being friends with someone because they're racist, it's the bare minimum thing to do.
And just so we're clear, if you stick around with racists, you can't get upset that you're associated with racism or that people think you're a racist too. Because if your friend's racism isn't enough to end a friendship over, that means you're okay with racism. Being okay with racism means you're racist. Just so you know.
Like it's just time to admit that they don't think ANY Black people should be in Greek myths, but there's something especially heinous and insulting to racists to suggest that the most beautiful woman in the world could ever be seen as... Wait for it... A dark skinned Black African woman.
That's the unspoken part. The double disbelief. Not only are we breaking the whites-only supremacist fantasy that Greek Mythology has been forced on the rest of us for literal centuries to be, but we're forcing them to accept that, gasp! Not everyone on the planet thinks a blonde haired blue eyed white woman is ultimate standard of beauty!! Egads!!
"I want my media to be historically accurate"
Cool, so you want natural fiber costumes with no/nuanced corset slander, people wearing colors, historical hairstyles, people wearing hats or headcoverings and long sleeves outside during the day, no potatoes or pumpkins in pre-columbian Europe, actors with textured skin and wrinkles, minimal makeup, consulting HEMA groups and weapons scholars for all the weapons and fight scenes, a good soundtrack that includes traditional instruments?
Oh, you mean you want 100% white people. Even in crowd scenes in port cities. There's a different word for that.
Y'all do know that people have to actually GROW in order for us to "accept their growth". That's the bit. You're not a child. You actually have to put in the work to become the person you want us all to assume you are.
5 things your character can't do while speaking
Choke. Just think about it, seriously. Think about what choking is and imagine speaking while it’s happening. That would fuckin’ hurt, man.
Hiss. Look, it’s just not possible, okay? No matter how “evil” you want your character to seem.
Snarl. Animals snarls. The Beast from Beauty and the Beast snarls. The Hulk snarls. You know who doesn’t snarl? PEOPLE WHEN THEY’RE SPEAKING.
Shriek. Come on, 99% of the time, “shriek” is not the word you want.Let’s face it: if you put an exclamation point at the end of the sentence, your reader gets the picture. Don’t bring to mind banshees and screaming toddlers.
Sneer. I’m not even going to bother explaining this one. “SNEER” ISN’T EVEN A SOUND.
Choked is not meant to be taken literally, an obstruction in the throat. It means they’re having difficultly speaking, they’re forcing the words out with difficulty. Often used when the character is convulsed in tears or laughter.
Hiss is a low, threatening whisper. Raw, guttural, vicious. It is NOT a literal hiss like an animal, it is a tone of voice that serves the same function. Someone will hiss that they’re going to cut your throat- a message from one person to the other.
Snarl is the same kind of thing. Not literal, it’s a tone of voice that serves the same function. It’s raw and gutteral like a hiss, but more savage than vicious. It’s loud, it’s showy, it’s intimidating. It’s very alpha male, big man, look at how fucking dangerous I am. I’ll take ALL of you on. Even if they’re snarling at one person in particular, nobody better back them up or they’re gonna get fucked up too.
Shriek. Come on, seriously? We’ve all heard people shriek either in fear or outrage. High pitched, loud, out of control, feminine. Men can shriek, but it’s funny and emasculating. Think angry italian women throwing pots and pans or ladies on tables who just saw a mouse.
Sneering is contempt whether it’s a facial expression or a tone of voice or both. There are a hundred different ways to sneer with your voice, but it all adds up to the same thing.

happy autism awareness day to all the girls who had “ friends” growing up who were actually bullying them . to the girls who always sat alone in the grass and wondered why nobody wanted to talk . to the girls who spoke to animals like they were listening . to the girls who created a little world in their room . to the girls who always felt ashamed for how deeply they love things and how passionately they enjoyed media . to the girls who covered their ears when they were overwhelmed by everything . to the girls who carrying a special thing around to feel safe . to the girls who never understood what they did wrong to feel so lonely . to the girls who were diagnosed later in life because they weren’t little boys who liked trains. you are so special and beautiful and you’re not worse for it, you love deeply and that is so wonderful please never try to push that down . I LOVE YOU !!!!!
I'm a little late to the party, but adding: happy belated autism awareness month to all the girls who told themselves for years that they didn't deserve to "complain" because they were "never bullied," but who spent their school years feeling different, othered, and invisible. To all the girls who told themselves that they should be grateful they weren't getting physically shoved into lockers or having actual insults yelled at them because that was their only understanding of "bullying."
It didn't have to be physical and visible to affect you. Being treated as "atypical" hurts. Being excluded, even if it's not explicit, hurts. And you're allowed to feel that. You're allowed to need time to heal, even if others don't recognize the wound.
I found this reddit thread on bluesky, and the comments are surprisingly a nice read (how can we really verify these comments are from actual tourists and they're being truthful? Eh, I guess we can't do that better than you can on any other reddit thread, but the comments are pretty overwhelmingly positive, so at least some of them are likely from real tourists expressing their real opinions)
Some friendly comments from Americans replying to the last one, too:
I’m at 5 what about you?
