Love begins again
It’s crazy that countries on the edge of the Sahara desert are reversing desertification by just digging half circles
The ground in these places is too compact for water to soak in during wet season which leads to flooding but digging these holes gives the water a place to stop and soak in. And they’re pushing back the desert with this. By just digging holes.
The new plants also help even more water soak into the ground which reduces flooding even more.
These places also give people places to grow food and graze animals like people are turning completely dry compact desert into a refuge for wildlife and plants and solving regional food insecurity just by digging holes.
The half-circles are called zaï! They're a traditional farming practice in the Sahel desert, and their introduction + reintroduction can be largely credited to Yacouba Sawadogo, the man linked above! He reintroduced and innovated on the zaï on his own farm in the 1980s, and did extensive outreach (along with scientist Mathieu Ouédraogo) to encourage other farmers to adopt them as well.
He also promoted the use of cordons pierreux, which are basically just lines of rocks to reduce erosion, preserve sediments, and increase water absorption.
Immensely cool dude. He's been a personal hero since I learned about him.
Ooooh, Mr. Sawadoga innovated the traditional zai method by adding manure and other biological matter to the holes! This put nutrients in the soil as well as helping even more with water retention and attracted termites whose tunnels helped loosen the compacted earth, all of which supported plant-growth like no zai before! Which increased water-retention even further! Oh excellent, excellent work!
It is a crime that the link preview doesn't show Mr. Sawadoga's face, so here's his photo from Wikipedia.
This is the face of a man adding beauty to the world and making the future better.

Yerin Ha as Sophie in Bridgerton (Season 4)
My favorite part about season 4 of Bridgerton and Sophie's journey is that she learns how abundant love is in all forms.
She starts off not believing anyone could love her and she doesn't deserve love. She never knew her mom, she assumed her dad didn't love her after learning he left nothing to her in his will, and was abused by her step mom. She always felt out of place and never truly cared for.
But it was Alfie and Irma who helped her get to the masquerade ball. It was Benedict who without even knowing who she was, saved her from the Cavendish house because he saw men attempting to assault a maid. It was Violet who hired her after learning she saved Benedict and who adored her and was eventually supportive of her and Benedict's relationship. It was Posy who literally climbed out a window to warn her that Araminta was trying to find her. It was her fellow maids/staff like Varley, Alfie, and Hazel who tried to get her help when they found out she was arrested. It was Hazel and Alfie who constantly provide her with emotional support. It was Eloise who steps up to distract Cressida while Sophie goes to find her father's will. It was Violet and Benedict who work together to blackmail Araminta into dropping the case against Sophie. It was Lady Danbury and Alice Mondrich who work to get the Queen to support Sophie and Benedict's union. Everyone had Sophie's back and that's how she got her happy ending.
People often misunderstand Cinderella and claim it’s just about a wealthy man who saves her from poverty and abuse, but a true Cinderella story will have her mice, birds, and fairy god mother who help her get to her happy ending. Sophie learns she has a whole community of loved ones who are there for her.
Just saw someone say the Bridgerton family are like Queen Charlotte’s sims and I cannot stop wheezing
These two... 🥹 AHHHHHHHHHHHH
Benophie:
I watched Bridgerton Season 4 and it was way too good, so I couldn’t resist doodling. Benophie supremacy.
Part of what makes season 4 of Bridgerton so enjoyable is that much like Pride and Prejudice, Sophie and Benedict’s love is so b-plot to most of the main characters that it’s both delightful and comical when they eventually find out.
