I hate people involving disabled people in pro-choice and pro-life arguments. You all have sterilized disabled people against their wills. You have raped disabled people and forced them to carry children. You have made disabled people’s lives harder with your laws or lack thereof. You don’t get to use ableist logic to justify a pregnant person’s right to choose, nor do you get to use the suffering of a real living disabled people to justify abortion when you could just leave it a ‘pregnant person’s right to choose’ because that’s really all you need. And pro-lifers don’t get to use disabled fetuses as a pity card when they don’t help disabled kids at home or in foster care.

If you’re able-bodied, this topic is too nuanced for you and you will always screw it up. So leave disabled people out of your petty arguments unless you are sharing something they wrote.

Stay in your lane and stop saying ableist things to justify your point of view.

Hi just letting y’all know that Sia, the artist, is making what is essentially a big “F you” to autistic people. She is collaborating with Autism Speaks which is an organization that believes autism is something to be cured and treats autistic people like burdens. It is another run of the mill inspiration p**n movie for non autistic people and able bodied people to feel like they have compassion and understanding for us. For any of you who are not autistic and are able bodied, please do not support this film as it perpetuates bad stereotypes about autism and disabled individuals.

- maddie ziegler (a dancer and actress who’s a frequent collaborator of sia’s) is playing the character music, who is the main character’s “teenaged, autistic half-sister” (quote taken directly from premise on wikipedia). maddie is not autistic.

- these were some of her responses upon the movie being (rightly) faced with criticism:

Her responses to the criticism were what really hit me about the situation. She’s claiming to have put in all this work to understand, respect, and be true to us and our experiences, but her replies on twitter are very snappish and f-bomby and dismissive. To copy-paste what I tweeted about it:

I understand having good intentions and wanting ppl to see the film before they judge. But Sia's responses are very disappointing, and seeing her RT autism speaks doesn't give me confidence in her research or understanding of autism.

Tbh, I was more willing to wait and see how the film turned out [before passing judgment] before I scrolled through Sia's twitter to see how she was responding. I do like her singing, and I'm disappointed in what I've seen. :/

Anyway, wish she hadn't jumped straight to being defensive, but just reading her replies and the hateful commentary generated by some of the people defending Sia, it feels bad. I don't think she's a bad person, but I think she's handling this badly, and I think that matters.

I’m autistic, and these are just my thoughts. Like, I certainly wasn’t thrilled with the film choices initially, but this is what really sealed it for me. She’s not listening, and I think that speaks volumes.

I also want to add dermatillomania! It’s not technically a skin condition but rather a form of OCD that causes someone to actively and uncontrollably pick at, scratch at, et cetera their own skin, and because of that, people will dermatillomania often have scarred and even scabbed skin. For me, growing up with scarred and scabbed arms was kinda rough, so I just want to say that all of us with imperfect skin are beautiful 😉
