The bar was rather quiet, for this part of town, at this time of day. There were only about a dozen people or so milling about–mostly family operatives or long-time regulars–some sitting alone with their drinks, some watching the baseball game on the big screen on the far wall. There was generally very little chitchat.
Ashiya suspected, as she made her way inside, that there would be a bit more commotion downstairs right now, in the fighting ring. Hosting the pit had been a significant part of why the Maou family opened this bar in the first place. Ashiya herself had been the one to select the property. The basement was massive, certainly big enough for the ring and a good number of seats, and it had already been soundproofed. Ideal, for concealing their nightly matches from the authorities.
It brought in a fair bit of money. And indeed, Ashiya had find it quite useful for training purposes. … And occasionally, general stress relief. But really, tonight, she was just here for the bar.
She greeted the manager with a smile, as she took her usual seat at the bar.
“Good evening, Ms. Kisaki,” she said. “Business has been good, I trust?”
“Ashiya,” she returned, smile and nod as she continued wiping down the cup she had been holding.
“It’s been a slow but steady night up top. Down below though? It’s packed, more so than usual. Sounds like a good fight is going on too,” she explained, putting the glass away.
Most of tonight’s business had come from the fight ring in the basement, watchers coming up for drinks to take below. Not that she would complain, it was still a paying customer and was still a profit being made.
“How have you been?”
