sometimes it feels like I am cursed, to feel so much of the animals’ suffering in my heart.

when I am overwhelmed with grief and hopelessness over their pain, I try to tell myself that they need humans like me to feel their suffering so that they may not suffer in vain. I cannot save all the turtles from being killed by cars every day, but to the one turtle I move across the road, or take somewhere safe, or rescue from injury and certain death, or even move to allow them to die in peace and with dignity when they are too far gone, my existence matters to them. to that one turtle I am an angel and I know me being there in that moment saved them from a lonely, tragic certain death. or at least allowed them to die in peace. I am currently coming across a turtle nearly every day in the road, some alive some dead, sometimes both in one day. It is hard on my sensitive heart.

but I must be brave and not allow myself to be consumed by the overwhelming sadness I feel at times. I will have my time in the end to shut it all off but for now I must endure the reality of this life and be strong.

these creatures are ancient, innocent beings that are just trying to exist in a human world that has built on their habitat and left them with nowhere safe to stay. their numbers are dwindling primarily because of cars and lawn mowers/machinery. watch out for rustling in the grass when you mow. please watch out for turtles in the roads, they need angels to watch over them when so many people don’t care. some of them are very small and can be easily missed if you aren’t watching for them. if it is safe for you to stop, please move them to the other side of the road where they were headed. even if you see one not moving, please stop if you can to check on them. sometimes they will stop in the middle of the road because cars are speeding by/over them and they get scared. they may pee on you out of fear but they will not bite. even snapping turtles can be handled briefly to be moved if you are confident and do not threaten them.

I have spent time with turtles and they are long lived, truly intelligent and fascinating animals that have personalities and feel emotions. like all animals, they must be met on their level to be truly understood. I hope if I do nothing else with my life, I can save a few turtles and spread some kind of understanding and appreciation for these sweet beings.
