never felt the whole "if buying isn't owning then pirating isn't stealing" more than today. I really wanted to play Unreal Tournament but it is gone from my steam library and you can't even search for it in the store. I'd bought it, its fucked it's gone.

ill never forgive gamer culture for boiling down genuinely well made/told stories to "oo-ra I like to kill fuck yeah man guns and explosions" gamerbro shit, just for being action games. I do admit that I think action games are STILL over permeating in the gaming landscape, but that doesn't mean that action games, yes even shooters, cant have well made and/or fun stories. This post is about HALO and GEARS OF WAR. Both of these games have genuinely well considered and well crafted worlds for different reasons and good stories to tell, but are only ever remembered for their multiplayer "fuck yeah shooting" impact. Gears of war is remembered for being gory and having good multiplayer, Halo is remembered SOMETIMES for its story, but more often than not for its revolutionary multiplayer. MULTIPLAYER is not the enemy, its not a bad thing, but fuck do these games have some potent writing in their CAMPAIGNS, which were the main focus of the game being made in the first place.

Gears of war has a potently written critique of fascism, living under it, those who are used by it, and its cyclical self destructive mode of existence. Gears of war is *sometimes* about big dudes with big guns screaming and shooting big monsters, but every other time its about how fascism eats everything it creates alive including the people it so proudly proclaims it will protect as the chosen ones. Halo is a space opera featuring a religious alien superpower that experiences a schism so great it almost destroys the galaxy. It has philosophical zombies that cause the FIRST galaxy destroying event. It has a united earth military that acts in spite of its secret fascist government that kidnapped 6 year olds to make supersoldiers and killed upwards of 60% of them in the process, you play as one who survived. Its a rich world full of stories and well written characters, interesting world building, dont even get me started on ODST and its side logs you can find from the fall of New Mombasa.

These games are more than just, shooters. Every game strives to be more than its genre. Sometimes they are, and they get to end being that. Sometimes they end up like Halo and Call of Duty, trapped forever in the cycle of annual franchises and upholding a legacy that was created by people who aren't allowed to work on the game anymore.

I'm sure we've all seen that trailer. I honestly have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I'm glad that Deus Ex still managed to get a remaster. On the other hand.. I really wish they put in more effort.

I wish NightDive had worked on it instead of Aspyr, because I heard they outsource instead of doing it themselves.

Let's just hope they put it back in the oven for a few more minutes..

Hello nerds, bringing you a HUGE work in progress model haha I wanted to bring Commander Keen to 3D, so I've been chipping away at this project between work! He's nearly done, just needs more haircards and I want to tweak the values on some of the textures.

Guess who just finished System Shock 2 Remaster!

[SS2 REMASTER SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT]

A solid 10/10 for me, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING REMASTER TO AN AMAZING GAME!

I really wish I'd finished it earlier in the original ver, but I was stubborn and I kept insisting that I should finish SS1 first XD

Like I said in my previous SS2:R post.. This remaster was incredibly faithful, NightDive did make some changes, but they were extremely subtle to the point that you couldn't even notice it. It really was just SS2 but with better lighting, higher polygons and more modern controls. Hell, they even made the UI better. Returning to the original, I never realized how aged (?/ is that a word XD) it looked.

I've said everything I wanted/needed to say about this remaster, please get it when it's on sale. It's extremely good. I hope they make a remake soon!

Now onto the game itself as I never finished the original SS2..

Seeing this part absolutely shocked me, yes I did see this in the credits when I played co-op crossplay with my brother, however I didn't realize that it was actually a part of the game that you could reach (Like I said, I haven't finished OG SS2 so I didn't know). It's a beautiful throwback and it's done wonderfully. I love how instead of basically remaking it in SS2's style and graphics they just kept it as is and I loved how this was basically SHODAN's memory. Ahh, beautiful. One of my favorite parts of the game.

the cargo deck in ss2 is so well designed. it’s still early enough in the game that you don’t feel powerful yet. the mechanical doors prevent you from running away and getting distance from the protocol droids chasing you because they open so slowly. the doors also delay closing behind you so that when you do finally hear the sound of the door motor again you have to quickly check behind you that it wasn’t triggered by another enemy. the dimly lit mazes of storage boxes make you scared of turning the corner.

only when the worms and spiders start showing up in numbers in ops/recreation is that level of fear matched again, and it’s not the same because it’s relying on traditionally creepy things instead of that finely built sense of paranoia

I'm aware that I'm late to the party, but I've been playing System Shock 2 remastered lately and once again I'm thanking Nightdive for making such a faithful remaster.

Playing System Shock 2 Remastered felt like playing System Shock 2 for the first time (which was 3 years ago?! Time really flies). I revisited OG SS2 since I never really finished it and wow, I never noticed how much change they did to the game. I could've sworn the icons in the inventory were more high quality and also the text and all...

First time playing SS2, I felt like this game was still fresh even decades after its release. Now after playing the remaster, I can see its age.

I adore how much change Nightdive can to do old games yet it's just like how people remembered it. Anyway, please get System Shock 2 : 25th Anniversary Remaster, it's not only a good remaster but also a damn good game.
