Teaching

This is in response to the people who seem to think that it’s ridiculous that they would have to explain anything. Particularly those of an oppressed group (LGBTQ+, race, and women). This is usually phrased as the other person has too much privilege that they can’t understand why it would be a problem to explain.

I am a female a part of the lbtq+ community. I understand it can be a pain to constantly have to explain things that to me are obvious. Here’s the thing, we can never expect any change if we do not explain things. If an offensive thing is said, but with the intention of being nice, or if someone has a genuine question: THIS IS A PERFECT LEARNING OPPORTUNITY. They are willing to learn and have come into this with a positive attitude. Use it to teach them; if you react completely negatively, they will most likely be more closed off to your side and less willing to learn. This is also a perfect moment to get an ally. But reacting horribly to them will do no good, and you will just continue to be angry afterward.

If any cause wants to make progress, then it has to be done in an educational way. I know it’s not fair, but that is the way it is. This system is not made to have power taken, it must be given. So get the people in power to give you the power you want, but that cannot be done with force. Force doesn’t work because you become the enemy.

Pregnacy

For reference, I am a 20-year-old female. I personally do not want to have my own kids. I love kids (although there’s no problem if you don’t), and I plan to take care of kids. I want to be a foster parent. 

Now the problem comes when I tell people over the age of 30 this. Their response about 87.5% (100% of males and 65% of females) of the time is, “you will change your mind”.  This is a three-fold problem. One: why do they care? Their life is not affected by my having biological children in the future. They don’t ask if I have reasons for this idea, just that I will change my mind. Two: what does it matter if I do? Just because I may in the future does not negate my current plan. Just because someone when to college for something and ended up in another career did not make their original plan less valid. Three: all males think I will. None of them have ever given birth to kids, they just got the amazing result of having a child afterward. I totally respect women who go through childbirth, it’s just something I am not interested in, and people who are unable to experience it should not comment on whether or not I should. 

My reasons for not wanted kids are as follows:

1. I want to dedicate my time to having foster kids, and while you can have both, I also have no desire to have a house full of children constantly.

2. A neurological degenerative disease runs in my family. It’s pretty much a disease that reveals itself later in life that eats a person’s brain. If a parent has it, their child has a 50% chance of having it. I would probably find out if my mom had it after I had had kids. I don’t want to risk passing it down to my kid.

3. We have plenty of children in the world, there is no reason for me to contribute more to this problem.

Again, it shouldn’t matter. I can live my life how I please, and people need to be less judgemental about this choice. I know people who have no desire to have kids, and their desires should be respected and not questioned.
