The asexual representation on Bojack Horseman 😮 Was not expecting that and it made me so happy!
(Sort of) Reflecting on the past year.
Been doing a lot of reflection lately. I usually try not to let myself get too deep into it to avoid getting upset, but I know it'll happen eventually. I'm just really upset that despite going into this academic year more positive and motivated than ever, I have spent the entire year severely depressed and sad and more alone than ever. This entire year is really one big blur of intense pain and grief and I feel so wounded. I feel like a year of my life has been wasted / stolen. It's really difficult to put into words how horrible and tortuous this year has been. I won't list everything that went wrong because I don't feel like reliving all the horrible things. Basically, every important thing that could have gone wrong did go wrong (with the exception of my academics, but my grades have only increased because my anxiety about performing well has been really heightened and it's really not good for me, despite the raised GPA, which is all relatives comment on or care about). I have lost my dog, and in losing her, I've lost part of myself, part of my identity, part of my family, part of my childhood. And the grief is changing so frequently I can't keep track. It's the most painful experience of my life and I've never been so heartbroken and lost. I don't know what to say, again, not trying to upset myself too much. I just feel really tenderly sad about the whole thing. I feel really broken. I feel really alone and I had prepared myself to go above and beyond to make friends this year but I haven't made the progress I wanted because circumstances destroyed my mental state. There's nothing worse than trying hard and having things not work out. This year didn't work out. This has been the worst year of my life and I don't know how to start the recovery process when school ends in 7 weeks and I'll return to my own home and have to start getting my shit together. I was overjoyed to leave my dorm and everything behind last year. Even though this year was infinitely worse, I don't think that will be the case. I'm scared to leave everything behind because my suffering has become my identity this year. My single dorm room has become the home of my suffering. It might be really emotional for me to close this chapter of my life and move out of school for the summer. I don't know how I'll feel. I'm scared. I'm going to need help and support when I go home. Maybe before then, too. I'll try to get in touch with my high school therapist when I go back and maybe I'll see if the student health center can help me in the meantime, maybe just for the last month of school. I'm just so sad. I'm so damn sad.
In other news... Asperger's?
I'm very convinced that I have Asperger's. I suspected it for a while (past few months) but tonight I really sat down and did a lot of research, took available online tests (grounded in scientific research, they don't diagnose but suggest you get tested if you fall within a certain threshold) and for everything I tested very close to the average for females with Asperger's. I don't believe I was ever tested for this but the extreme social disconnect/difficulty I've experienced in college made me suspicious. Now, lots of things from my childhood and the rest of my life are kind of falling together and it's really really overwhelming. I'm just posting on this blog because I don't feel comfortable talking to anybody about this and this is kind of a log of my mental state, etc. 1. When I was a young kid, my teachers always expressed to my parents that they couldn't tell whether I was paying attention / engaged in class. My mom always told me teachers didn't know if I cared because they couldn't "read" my face and I was always very inexpressive. 2. Since coming to college, I can't tell when people want to talk to me. It's happened to me more than once that I and another person I know will be the only two people in a hallway. They'll gesture to me or say "hey!" and I'll still keep walking without responding. Then later I'll realize and will be like "Oh, were you talking to me?" 3. I tend to get really obsessed with certain things/hobbies but mostly for very short amounts of time before I move on to something else. When I'm still interested, I read entire Wikipedia articles, watch tons of videos on the subject, visit forums, join Facebook groups, etc. and I feel really incomplete if I don't learn everything there is to learn. I make checklists and organize all of this information once I've compiled it. 4. I've always tended to imitate characters or behaviors I observed during social gathering or conversations because I don't know how to act in those situations. 5. In my two years of college, I haven't made a single "close" friend (with the exception of my roommate. I get annoyed with her sometimes but sometimes I get really tired of being alone with myself and need someone to distract me). I used to think I struggled to make friends because of social anxiety, but I'm starting to realize it's not quite that... I just don't "click" with people. I don't understand how to communicate with others and I don't understand how friendships and relationships form. 6. When people are talking to me or complimenting me I can never tell if they're being sincere or if they're making a joke or being sarcastic. In the same vein, I can't always tell when people are being sarcastic and then they'll say "you know I'm joking, right?" 7. In high school and in college I've been told I sound really formal and I really don't get it! In high school I was in a play and my director kept telling me to drop the accent I was doing. I had no idea what they were talking about and had to keep insisting that I wasn't putting on an accent and was just speaking normally. In my first semester of college I wrote a personal reflection / free-write for class and when I was asked to read it aloud, my teacher criticized me for my writing style being too formal (even though I had no idea I would have to read it to others, that's just how I write). She mocked me, actually, and it was embarrassing. 8. I suffer from really intense anxiety because I never know what people expect from me, both socially and academically. This makes interacting with people really intimidating and makes assignments seem insurmountable. I overwork myself and never know if my work is good enough, then I get it back and it's always fine, but that fact doesn't seem to help. For this reason I always like to have very specific instructions for assignments or else I feel really lost. 9. I want to work in the film industry but never deemed myself creative enough to be a filmmaker because I can't think of a story without copying existing work. People always say, "but you are a creative person!" because I like to sing and act, but those things are very different from having to imagine your own stuff. I'm better at organizational skills. 10. I can't relax unless I've done everything I have to do for the day (often depression prevents me from doing so and so I get really anxious and have a hard time sleeping). I make lists in various formats and schedule everything I have to do, even the most minor things. 11. I adjusted really poorly to both high school and college and I'm terrified of change. I don't know what else to say about this one. One little thing gone awry in my schedule messes up my entire day, and if something unexpected happens I really struggle to get back on track. 12. My "friends" seem to cancel on me last minute all the time and it makes me super angry. I consider it really disrespectful and assume it means I'm not anybody's priority (which might be true because I don't feel connected to anybody-- why should they feel connected to me?) I'm starting to wonder if this seems to keep happening because I don't understand when people say "yes" but it's actually more of a "maybe, I'll have to let you know later". I think it's possible that I just can't tell the difference from their expressions and so I always take any kind of affirmation as a commitment and a solid "yes" and am totally caught off guard when they back out. Anyway, that's it. I just had to word vomit all of that out because I was feeling overwhelmed by everything and wanted to write it down. I have to wake up in 6 hours but at least I feel a little more under control. I don't know what to do about this. I had decided that I wouldn't get any mental help until the end of this academic year in 7 months, and then when I go home I'd try to reconnect with my high school therapist. I really want to hear her thoughts on this because I'm just the kind of person who needs to know instead of just kind of wonder. I put together all my results on a page/report and I'm going to print it. So, feelings. When I sat down to write this I was feeling kind of panicked because I sort of feel like I don't know myself. I was being treated for social anxiety but nothing was really working... if it turns out the signs are correct and I have Asperger's that kind of means transitioning to a "fixable" problem to something that's actually just ingrained in me and permanent. I've been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety, OCD, and an eating disorder not otherwise specified, and so I was feeling pretty sure of things until now. I'm wondering if some of those issues I thought I had, like OCD and generalized anxiety, could actually be results of Asperger's, since some of the behaviors line up. I also read that though Asperger's is present since childhood, it may not be noticeable until a certain situation pushes a person to capacity. I think going to college might be that situation that's pushed me to a point where I'm really starting to realize I don't act the same as others (at home I knew everyone since I was really young so meeting new people and forming relationships wasn't something I actually experienced to the extent I'm experiencing it now). I feel I've never tried harder to form friendships, but I'm still super unsuccessful and I genuinely couldn't tell why. So. Now all that's down, I can calm down a bit. I'm going to bed. It's been 2 years since I've seen my therapist, but I really could use some help. I've been drowning the whole time and the death of my dog has really destroyed me. An Asperger's diagnosis might be kind of scary but it also could be kind of a relief. I don't think these feelings/behaviors are a result of my grief since a lot of them are from before that happened and from my childhood. *P.S. Take everything I say here with a grain of salt. I'm not a psychiatrist. I need one to give me their two cents on what I'm experiencing to make conclusions.*
Also can I just say it here: I really fucking hate college and I really don't fucking want to go back tomorrow. Back to being alone with nothing in my everyday life to live for in a vile concrete jungle.
So before Thanksgiving, I weighed about 125 pounds. My goal before that was to get to 130 pounds. My goal at that weight was "not to go over 132". Right now I'm at 124 pounds, which I like. I'm "happy" (nothing is actually happy anymore since my loss and the grief) that I've been able to keep it steady for 4 months and not gain anything back, even through the holidays. The fact that I haven't rapidly been dropping also attests to the fact that there's nothing wrong with what I'm doing and that I've got it under control. Now, my goal is to get down to 120 and I think I'll be content then. I'm going to try to keep continuing to exercise just because it's healthy, and it's an effective (affective?) way to get my body toned instead of just thinner. I won't let anyone try to comment or fight me on this. I've lost a major friend/relationship/family member. I'm more depressed than ever. I deserve to at least look the way I want to look without anyone screaming "eating disorder!" or treating me like something's wrong (thankfully no one in my life has done that yet). Getting my weight where I want it is the only thing I can do for myself and so I'm going to do it. Everything else in life is out of my hands and I hate it. Everything causes me anxiety, every day.
Guilt.
I’ve been faced with a horrible, aching fear that we killed her with chemotherapy. Her cancer appeared to be in remission. But her liver never got better. Cancer doesn’t just spread to your organs if it looks so good it’s in remission? Not her kind of cancer..... her kind of cancer wouldn’t have done that. Would it have?Â
It’s been 4 months and my grief just keeps changing. No guilt to devastating guilt. No regret to horrible regret. Either way, I feel horrible. And I want my dog back. I don’t know how to cope. I’m hit with involuntary thoughts about her suffering and her treatment every day. I have nightmares about horrible things happening to her. I don’t know how to cope. If we killed her I don’t know how I can forgive myself. What would have happened if we didn’t treat it? Her doctors told us when she was diagnosed that prognosis wasn’t good. Why did we believe him? Why did we do this? Why didn’t I stop her from licking the floor in our fucking old house so she wouldn’t have gotten cancer in the first place?
I keep reading about her cancer. I keep trying to get to the bottom of it. It’s rare. The research is shit. But I don’t think it would have spread on its own. I don’t know where we went wrong. It started showing up physically again when we knew she was dying, that her liver was failing. What does it mean? Did her cancer kill her? I wanted nothing other than to save her. I wanted nothing other to do right by her.
It’s so hard to concentrate these days. And everything seems to be going wrong.Â
It's been nearly four months and I still just can't believe she's gone. I can't process it. I can't fathom it. There's just a constant, empty, aching, agonizing pain inside because I know she died. I just can't believe it. I'm still waiting to see her again. My heart is still yearning and reaching out for her. And I can't stop crying. And the nightmares won't stop.
god, take me back to when things were simpler and my best friend was still alive.
Take a shower, wash off the day. Drink a glass of water. Make the room dark. Lie down and close your eyes. Notice the silence. Notice your heart. Still beating. Still fighting. You made it, after all. You made it, another day. And you can make it one more. You’re doing just fine.

Everyday...
I loved her more than I’ve ever loved anything else in my 20 years on this earth.Â
So, I guess it makes sense that it feels like my world has crumbled and is still crumbling. The most powerful love suddenly ripped out of my life. Everything I knew is gone. Everything I thought I knew about death and grief was wrong.Â
The most powerful driving force of love and joy in my everyday has been removed. Colors are dull. Relief is fleeting. I don’t know how to push myself to make up for the absence because I had her for 11 years, since childhood. I’ve never learned. And hating school and where I’m living and suffering from depression anyway makes it worse. It makes everything physically painful and when I wake up I just don’t know what to do with myself because everything hurts.
This blog is for me, but if you have somehow stumbled on it (welcome), and feel I’m being overdramatic over a dog, my dog, you’re just wrong. This is what it feels like. This is how I felt about her. This is how I’m suffering and how I’m grieving.Â
It’s true that grief is a reflection of the love one has lost. The more you loved someone, the more it hurts.
And I really loved her.Â
I am so depressed. It's never been worse (well, it's been fluctuating for the past 3 months but this is the worst bout I've had). I have nothing to look forward to in the next month and a half and I'm completely alone. Can't get out of bed.
The house is freezing and I wish my puppy girl was here to cuddle. I miss her so bad. Walking in the house after being gone for a while and not receiving her greeting makes my heart go cold. No matter how 'happy' I get, it will never compare to how 'happiness' felt when she was alive. Any joy is overshadowed by lurking grief. But in a way, I want it to stay this way. I can't imagine what would happen if I were to stop mourning her. I don't want to lose who I was when she was alive. I don't want to let go. My heart is yearning for a love I'll never get back.
I wish I got to see her body before she was cremated. I wish I got to say goodbye. Instead I saw her dead, eyes open, over FaceTime. 3,000 miles away.
My mom refuses to edit my sister's college applications and has made me the primary editor and so I get to relive the stress of applying to college myself times 10 because none of my sister's writing makes any goddamn sense and she decides to TAKE A NAP instead of working on the DAY THEY ARE ALL FUCKING DUE SO BASICALLY, I have to write her fucking essays FOR HER! So much for a relaxing break at home healing from all the intense emotional damage I have endured in the past months, I go back to fucking school in a week and surprise! I still spend each day unable to find happiness in ANYTHING! And everyone is so busy making sure my sister's applications get in and that I'm NICE TO HER despite her letting me down CONSTANTLY that my mental health doesn't fucking matter at all! But it's all fine! I'm not allowed to get fucking mad at her for taking a nap when all the responsibility is on me! Why the fuck am I editing these the night they're due? It's her fucking fault she didn't start them and forfeited the help of her provided college counselor.
Rotting...
[Before this post I remind any followers or stumblers upon this that this blog is mainly for me to document my emotional struggles over the years and put my feelings into words, there is no target audience]
Looking for grief relief, they say to talk about the loss and surround oneself with loved ones.
What do I do if I don’t have any?
I love my family but they DO NOT want to talk about our loss. My mom gets upset with me when I bring it up or even when I speak my dog’s name. I need to speak her name. I need to look at photos of her. I need to keep her memory alive and it’s over 2 months since her death but no one else wants to talk about her because it hurts too much. It’s a good hurt, although nothing is truly good with her dead and it tears at my soul every day. It’s better than never speaking of her or looking at her or being reminded of her and missing her and suddenly being hit and crying. I’ve been 3,000 miles away. Now that I’m home I need to let it out but I can’t. I’ve been home 21 days and I haven’t healed yet. I leave home again in 9 days and time is running short. And I currently only have one fucking friend in the entire world (at school) and I only met her 4 months ago so I don’t feel entirely comfortable around her. She never knew my dog, and she doesn’t know me, really. 3/4 months I’ve known her I’ve been severely depressed and not myself at all. She just couldn’t understand. How do I heal at school by myself? It doesn’t fucking work. I’m going back broken. I haven’t made the progress I wanted to make, that I so needed to make.
I am ALONE. All of my old friends have abandoned me when I need them most. I’m so hurt and angry on top of experiencing the worst grief I’ve ever faced. I’ve never been more depressed. Every day I go to bed feeling like it was another day wasted. Every day I’m unhappy, no matter what happens. Every day I think it might be better and it’s not. I feel like I’m rotting inside. I feel useless. I feel hopeless. I feel disgusted by everything*.
I need a new therapist (haven’t had one in a year and a half after graduating high school). My mom told me I’ve had plenty opportunities to get one in these past weeks but I just haven’t been capable, if that makes sense. It’s like I’m stuck, frozen. I can’t move. I can’t think. I can’t do anything. I spent the first semester of my sophomore year in a frantic haze, desperate not to let myself slip, feeling like everyone in the world hated me.Â
My world is crumbling. I’m disgusted with myself. I want her back. It can never be. She held my family together, in a sense. She was everything I ever wanted for 11 years. Now I’m empty. And no one wants to talk about her, but she kept me going and her memory still helps, even though it kills me that she isn’t here anymore. Of course everyone needs to grieve in their own way, but by never speaking of her, they aren’t helping my mental wellbeing at all. Like I said, I need a fucking therapist. I’m so tired of rotting every day. I’ve rotted every day since October 10th. And my so-called friends have left me to die. Â
I’m so alone. I was never ‘happy’ happy. I’m a depressed human being. But, now I’m a sad human being, a heartbroken human being. Nothing can predict grief. It is the weirdest and most painful roller coaster. I just want her back, I just want her back...
Nightmare it feels I will never wake up from.
____________________________________________Â
* To elaborate, I ‘love’ makeup yet I’m so fucking disgusted with it now. I buy it and it doesn’t make me happy. I don’t even get a slight rush of having something new. It’s all worthless. My mom gave me money to say thank you for helping out with something and I took it graciously but I feel so disgusted. Money will never help me. Buying things will never help me. Nothing worldly can make me happy like any of that stuff did before. I only love my family. That includes my dog, my baby, my family member who I lost. There is nothing else in the world that I love (or, at least, that’s how I feel right now). It contributes to the rotting inside feeling.Â
New Year... same grief.
It's 2017. 2016 was horrible. I lost my childhood dog, who was my best friend and honestly one of the most important relationships I had in my life. I got sick. I lost 15 lbs in a combination of grief /physical illness / eating disorder (which returned after being gone for years). I lived life in a haze, constantly killing myself over my schoolwork and agonizing over what my professors thought of me in my weird mourning state. People are saying 2016 won't be hard to beat, but honestly, even though it was such a terrible year, I can't imagine a good 2017 because my dog's not in it. A year without her could never make me happy. I just can't be excited for the future when I'm grieving. It's 2017 but I don't even want to think about it. I don't want it to mean anything. It's just further away from my girl, which is inevitable. I just want it to be another stupid number. Happy New Year, I guess. Here's to happier times. I hope I'm not the only one who isn't excited for 2017. Everything just hurts and I just miss my friend, my little angel girl. Two months since she died and I miss her all the time, it's devastating.
