I'll let you in on a secret. I have a doctorate in education, but the fieldâs basically just a 100 years old. We donât really know what weâre doing. Our scholarly understanding of how learning happens is like astronomy 2000 years ago.
Most classroom practice is astrology.
Before the late 19th century, no human society had ever attempted to formally educate the entire populace. It was either aristocracy, meritocracy, or a blend. And always male.
Weâre still smack-dab in the middle of the largest experiment on children ever done.
Most teachers perpetuate the âbankingâ model (Freire) used on them by their teachers, who likewise inherited it from theirs, etc.
Thus the elite âLyceumâ style of instruction continues even though itâs ineffectual with most kids.
Whatâs worse, the key strategies weâve discovered, driven by cognitive science & child psychology, are quite regularly dismissed by pencil-pushing, test-driven administrators. Much like Trump ignores science, the majority of principals & superintendents Iâve known flout research.
Some definitions:
Banking model --> kids are like piggy banks: empty till you fill them with knowledge that you're the expert in.
Lyceum --> originally Aristotle's school, where the sons of land-owning citizens learned through lectures and research.
Things we (scholars) DO know:
-Homework doesn't really help, especially younger kids.
-Students don't learn a thing from testing. Most teachers don't either (it's supposed to help them tweak instruction, but that rarely happens).
-Spending too much time on weak subjects HURTS.
Do you want kids to learn? Here's something we've discovered: kids learn things that matter to them, either because the knowledge and skills are "cool," or because .... they give the kids tools to liberate themselves and their communities.
Maintaining the status quo? Nope.
Kids are acutely aware of injustice and by nature rebellious against the systems of authority that keep autonomy away from them.
If you're perpetuating those systems, teachers, you've already freaking lost.
They won't be learning much from you. Except what not to become. Sure, you can wear them down. That's what happened to most of you, isn't it? You saw the hideous flaw in the world and wanted to heal it. But year after numbing year, they made you learn their dogma by rote.
And now many of you are breaking the souls of children, too.
For what?
It's all smoke and mirrors. All the carefully crafted objectives, units and exams.
WE. DON'T. KNOW. HOW. PEOPLE. LEARN.
We barely understand the physical mechanisms behind MEMORY. But we DO know kids aren't empty piggy banks. They are BRIMMING with thought.
The last and most disgusting reality? The thing I hear in classroom after freaking classroom?
Education is all about capitalism.
"You need to learn these skills to get a good job." To be a good laborer. To help the wealthy generate more wealth, while you get scraps.
THAT is why modern education is a failure.
Its basic premise is monstrous.
"Why should I learn to read, Dr. Bowles?"
Because reading is magical. It makes life worth living. And being able to read, you can decode the strategies of your oppressors & stop them w/ their own words.

A lot of the tumblr community is pro queer and progressive but why are they so violently against redemptions???
Seriously Iâve noticed a mind boggling amount of people who are dying on the hill that Harumi should rot in prison.
Do they even watch the same show?? Why are they dividing people into âevilâ and âgoodâ categories like that??? Ninjago has shown multiple times that people are complex and multi dimensional.
Flintlocke was just following the captain that he loved so much and trusted like a brother, Morro was consumed by a desperation to prove himself, Cyrus Borg hid the overlord virus from everyone, the dragon hunters were just scared by Iron Barons rule, The Ice Emperor was manipulated by Vex, Unagami was confused and angry by his abandonment, the Keepers were just doing their job, Ronin was trying to pay back his debt (and maybe support his family), Pythor used to be a power hungry jerk but being trapped in the tomb made him realize it meant nothing being a king or getting revenge, Garmadon before resurrection loved his son very dearly but was consumed by urges to destroy and infect others with his curse. And most importantlyâŚ
ďżźLloyd was a spoiled brat child who wanted to hurt people and cause mayhem until Wu finally caught him. Yes he wasnât a terrorist and was a kid but so was Harumi when she turned. They were the same age, around 10, when they were affected by the serpentine.
As well. All of the Harumi fans I know want Harumi to get a proper redemption. One where they pay for their crimes and feel horrible about what theyâve done. Where theyâre forced to live in the real world and not some delusion that they created when they were young and angry. I want Harumi to cry and feel like shit for murder and terrorism. I really would hate if Roots was the end of her story and her redemption! Sheâs gotta show that sheâs changed and is a different person in order to be fully redeemed in my eyes. I like a lot of others just want her to have a chance at redemption, not accept her as being redeemed immediately.
TL:DR: Ninjago has a plethora of people who start out evil but change and redeem themselves. So why is Harumi singled out? I believe Harumi hasnât redeemed herself canonically yet and has to go through a lot of pain and growth before that can happen. But If anyone thinks that Harumi doesnât deserve redemption then neither does Lloyd or Scales or Faith or Morro or Garmadon.
We canât forget that in the could be canon Splinter in the Blind Manâs Eye story Lloyd claims that Morro gave him the most trauma, because he committed atrocities in his own body. He never even says he has nightmares about Harumi!! Which he has a lot of damn nightmares!
Lloyd was brought to the good side because Wu gave him a chance and believed that he was good, and Lloyd did the exact same to Harumi. âThe best way to defeat your enemy, is to make them your friendââŚ
I just realized that a lot of people seemingly consider the Emperor and Empress as perfectly fine parents to Harumi, while I always tought they were incredibly negligent. Curious to see the opinions.
How good were the Emperor and Empress as parents?
They were perfectly good and supportive parents
They were emotionally distant
They were negligent parents, bordering on what would be criminal
They were verbally abusive
They were physically abusive
A combination of sort (please do explain I'm curious)
in the last episode of ninjago crystallized i noticed that harumi is in the background at the monastery with a prison guard/police officer trailing behind her, which implies that she got permission to leave jail and help them rebuild? and it made me sad that she was still in her âvillainâ outfit in that scene so i decided to design her a new one
i tried to incorporate elements of her old outfit because i think sheâs the type to want to be honest about her past and wear it as warning (as if to say âyou might not want to trust me but itâs your decisionâ). i also wanted it to be clear that sheâs moving toward the light though and that lloyd is important to her
Do you think those powers the girl showed in the trailer are elemental or just other realm magic?
Iâm hoping the latter, I feel like we have had about enough elements and the ones we have havenât been fleshed out yet whatsoever. Maybe like how the Formlings have their own powers? Itâs been a good while since weve seen a new realm!
(the powers donât seem to come form her prostetic since she uses her right arm for it)
You know, with Krux seemingly appearing, SOmeone who looks like Lily (though she may very well not be) and the monastery looking old? They literally JUST rebuilt it again, and it looks older then it did a year after Nya died.Â
If they do this, letâs just hope it turns out to be less retcon-y than âwrong place wrong timeâ....
So if the realms fuse we can have old characters back, thatâs fun. I think thereâs a decent chance it will be permanent, since the name of this new series implies it and some very smart people in this community already speculated about this happening.
My question is, would all realm fuse and which ones probably shouldnât?
Like okay, the cloud kingdom could be on some impossible to reach high mountains, since in a way that was already how it was accessible. The Neverrealm probably wouldnât cause much trouble either. The Oni and dragon? technically we already had them here so that should be fine too. Iâm more concerned about those places of, you know, death.
It is strongly implied that the departed realm is just another of the 16 realms. (14 maybe? 2 died I think.) So would that mean dead people can just go anywhere and living people can all visit their grandparents? Will death lose all meaning? I mean, not that it had that much meaning before, but you get the point.Â
Also can you image fusing Chima with it as well, these previously main character brushed off to the side and the possible destruction of their realm being viewed from another sideâs perspective lol
So if the plot really will be realmfusal like it appears to be an the fuse turns out to be permanent, that would mean new chances for a few favs, right?

They already seemingly removed Lloydâs ability to use other elements (or at least commpletely ignore it), canât they let her have this? And even if they wanted to nerve her, which I can honestly understand (I guess) then there would be better and more fun ways than âa time limitâ.Â
Like, imagine if instead of being a natural at everything she could only copy elements after the true potential is reached and she could only copy the mere basics? What if after copying the basics her abilities would depend on how much she has practices the powers? Sheâs basically become the embodiment of  âJack of all traits, master of noneâ, since sheâd have to balance practicing all the elements. And not practicing would leave her rusty and weaken her powers, like what happens with the ninja. They could even let her lose a certain element after not using it for long enough as a nerve.Â
Besides, even in this scenario the girl would defintely âstill beat the master of oneâ.Â
Side note 1: if weâre gonna keep Lloydâs ability to learn elements (and youâd count all elements, which Iâd argue you should)Â there would still be a distinct difference since he can simply learn about them and master them on his own (theoretically) while Skylor would first need to meet all the masters and keep practicing or lose the ability. Basically, without practice Lloyd would get rusty and SKylor would lose the ability until she copies the power again.Â
Side note 2: Also, in quest for lost powers she uses the element of water, so I guess nothing matters anymore.
Especially the s4 eleements just arenât fleshed out and seem kinda boring or weak, I want to view it as mroe interesting. Personally I just like to go with âwould it make sense if they could do this?â
Like s11, would the Master of Water controlling ice or snow to some extend make sense? Yes, then they could probably do it with enough practice.
Would the master of Fire be able control explosions and create various color of fire? Probably, I think it should be possible.
Should the Master of Earth be able to âseeâthrough the earthâ ĂĄ la Toph? Sure.
Should the Master of Wind be able to create a Vacuum, or suck the air from lungs? Yes. And if he could he would, he deserves it.Â
Would it make sense for the master of light to chance the colors of objects? Iâd argue so, so I think he could do that.
Would the Master of Forme be able to change the form and appearance of objects? YES her powers are too boring like this.
Wouldnât that be fun? It could also make battles a lot more fun and creative.Â
I'd say it has potential, since I am a sucker for foils working together and enemies to lovers. Not right now though, in order for it to be alright Harumi firstly needs to fully redeem herself, instead of ending up with some "enemy of my enemy" bs. In the ideal situation I'd say Harumi needs to do soul searching and pick up her life and for Lloyd to get over the ideal image of her he fell for and then fall again for the redeemed girl and the actual personality she ends up having. (Just my opinion, you're allowed to disagree and technicaly to hate as well, I just don't think hating would be beneficial to anyone.)
