Reading Russian literature is crazy cause everyone has a billion names and reading British literature is crazy because everyone in every family seems to have the same name

Reading Russian lit is like “okay so Raskolnikov is also Rodion Romanovich is also Rodya” and reading British lit is like “Miss Crawford told the other Miss Crawford that Mrs. Crawford was visiting Mr. Crawford so Mr. Crawford (different guy) told his brother Mr. Crawford that their father Sir Crawford is in town with Lady Crawford”

I don't speak a word of russian. Idk I just think it's pretty clear that Rodion shortens to Rodya and Vasily to Vasya the same way Johnathan shortens to John or Johnnie. This is a basic thing that English does too but nobody complains about english lit having too many names because "who's this trev that keeps being referenced in scenes where trevor is supposed to be???" I've read russian lit and the diminutives really aren't any harder to follow than any other literature.

I mean crap if my friends refered to me by my full given name and family name I would assume they had been poorly replaced with robots!

My deadname was in the very common Hispanic tradition of combining two given names to make a nickname (i.e, naming your child Maria Soledad but calling her Marisol) and I know how many brains that broke so I have no trouble believing the idea that Ivan to Vanya results in a mental BSOD.

I didn’t think I was going to need to clarify on this post that it’s possible to read Russian literature but yes it’s not that difficult, what’s actually a little harder is when the diminutives are less intuitive (like sergei to seryozha) or when you didn’t know a character’s patronymic and suddenly the prose is referring to a character that has been referred to by their first and last name for the rest of the book by their first name and patronymic instead. Again this does not make a book unreadable but it does make me do a double take and I once again feel the need to clarify that this post is a joke. And also that I made fun of literature in my first language in the same post
