Weekends Call for Sappy Crap
Ok, ok... I understand that we all have our own time to fall back into some sappy romance movies from the past. This past weekend was my time. I've been a bit under the weather and to be honest, feeling a bit less than supported by those in my life.
I decided to start my cry-fest with the 2001 feel-good romance SERENDIPITY starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. If you love a good fairytale love story, this is a must-see!
John Cusack has always been one of my most favorite romance actors, he has a puppy-dog charm that makes him just a little more handsome than he already is. This movie has you cheering for him and the belief in fate.
Sometimes I forget this movie when I'm in these moods but I could not be more grateful for remembering it this past weekend.
Check this out. I promise you won't be disappointed.
OMG! He was 2!!
My son, 21 years old, loves to watch good movies or series as much as I do.
He knows my taste.
Often, he'll recommend a series to me when he knows I'm "in between" shows but more often lately, it's been movies that he's been sharing with me.
He is the same son that kept encouraging me to watch MOLLY'S GAME and was so excited to hear that, not only had i watched it, but I freaking loved it. (BTW if you haven't watched that movie yet, I STRONGLY encourage you to do so).
During one of his most recent visits with me, he could not wait to tell me about two movies he had recently watched that he felt I would absolutely love.
"Have you found a new show yet Mom?" he asked me. I think he already knew I hadn't.
I told him no but I had been trying various ones, attempting to find one.
"Mom, if you haven't already seen them, you HAVE to watch The Prestige and The Departed!"
He went on to tell me that he knew THE DEPARTED was kind of old and that I had probably already watched it.
I told him that I thought I might have but I really couldn't recall.
Well, let me tell you, if I had watched THE DEPARTED before, I definitely would have remembered.
My son could not remember what streaming service he and his roommate watched either of these movies on, but I found myself rather frustrated when I was unable to find either of them for free. I wondered if THE DEPARTED was, perhaps newer than I recalled so I used my favorite app for all things tv, movie or actor related, IMDB, and discovered that THE DEPARTED came out in 2006. Yep, this movie, that was not free anywhere, was 19 years old!! That meant, my son, who thought this might be one of his most favorite movies of all time, was merely 2 years old when it first came out! I found myself frustrated with the thought of having to pay for a movie that was nearly 20 years old and decided I was either just going to wait awhile, as it was bound to be free eventually, or, I'd go to our local library and see if I could check it out there.
I explained this to my son who then told me he'd Venmo me the $5 to rent it because it was THAT good and he really wanted me to watch it. I told him he didn't need to do that and I promised him I'd check it out.
Sleepy is not my friend, so Friday night, er Saturday morning, I decided to dive into the movie.
I knew that LEONARDO DICAPRIO starred in the flick, my son is a huge fan of his and had declared this to be one of his best roles ever.what I didn't know was how phenomenal the rest of the cast was! Talk about an all-star cast, this movie had it!
JACK NICHOLSON is one of my absolute favorite actors. In fact, im not sure if I could tell you a role he's played that I haven't liked! The movie opens with a scene he stars in. Nicholson plays the part of COSTELLO, the head of an Irish Gang in South Boston. You see him speaking with a young boy named Colin who Costello "takes under his wing" and Colin refers to him as his uncle.
Fast forward, you see Colin, played by MATT DAMON, working undercover for the South Boston PD. He is working for the Irish Gang, still run by Costello.
In addition, during this time, Dicaprio's character. Billy, who is very new to the SB PD, receives an assignment to go under cover as part of the Irish Gang.
There are a few subplots occurring throughout the movie, but much of it is Colin trying to discover who the "rat" is that has infiltrated the gang. Meanwhile, Billy is trying to determine who the rat is within the SB PD.
This movie is flooded with amazing talent. Among those stars are MARK WAHLBERG, MARTIN SHEEN, VERA FARMIGA, and ALEC BALDWIN.
There was not one minute that I spent bored or waiting for something to happen.
This movie is 💯 % a MUST SEE!!
And if you have to rent it, as I did, it is worth 10× the $ 3.99!
Are You Watching This??
A.P Bio
Streaming on Netflix, I stumbled across this show late in 2024 and, sadly, forgot how much I enjoyed it.
Often, when I'm "in between" shows, I search for shows that are "light" or simply for background noise. I'll often return to some of my favorite shows, THAT 70'S SHOW, NEW GIRL, 2 1/2 MEN....But, I stumbled across this hidden gem.
According to IMDB (an app EVERY TV and movie lover should download)... the show is detailed as A.P. Bio (2018)
A former philosophy professor who takes a job teaching advanced placement biology uses his students to get back at the people in his life who have wronged him.
At first, I was unsure if I was going to continue my dive into the show.
The majority of the cast are unknown but they all completely capture your attention and make you want more.
Currently, I'm on the 3rd season of 4 and I cant stop watching.
Check it out. AP BIO is a must watch for me!
SOMETHING OLD
I have been streaming 24 on Hulu, mostly for background noise... or when I'm stuck in between other shows.
This show brings back a lot of memories for me. I usedbto watch it with my oldest son when he was still living at home.
The show stars Kiefer Sutherland, who could ask me to live with him in a cardboard box under an interstate and I would say "let's go!"
Sutherland plays the role of a counter-terrorist federal agent by the name of JACK BAUER. Bauer, the head of an elite team of agents, spends each day (every season is one day, 24 consecutive hours) attempting to uncover, divert, and stop various terrorist acts against the nation.
If you watch the first season, it will definitely leave you wanting more. The second season seems to be the conclusion of the story that began in season 1. I don't like giving away the story...especially in a show (or seasons that i declare a must-watch).
Season 3 brings about a whole different vibe. Although Sutherland is still a very vital role, this season seems to take a dive into a few other characters on the show, including Tony, (played by Carlos Bernard) Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) who is married to Tony in this season, and Kim Bauer, Jack's daughter played by Elisha Cuthbert.
I found this particular season more difficult to binge straight through and actually spent several weeks to get through it.
When season 4 began, I struggled to even make it through the first episode and have not gone back.
I have to admit, I knew there was at least 4 seasons of the show but hadn't realized that it actually has 9 seasons. Since I have not even made it through episode 1 of season 4, I definitely can't tell you anything about the remainder of the series.
Perhaps when I have run out of everything else to binge, I may go back and try again.
I will say, without a doubt, that seasons 1 and 2 are a must-watch by me. Season 3 is a "ok for background noise" ...
If you have watched the entire series, I'd love to hear your take.
That's my 2 cents on an oldie but with Kiefer Sutherland in it, it's a goodie!
Molly's Game
By request of my youngest son, I decided to check out MOLLY'S GAME. I am currently between shows to binge so it seemed like the perfect time.
Written by Molly Bloom and Aaron Sorkin, this movie did not disappoint!
Jessica Chastain nailed the rike of Molly Bloom. She is absolutely stunning and she has a way of making you want her to succeed as the story unfolds.
I feel I can't go into foo much detail regarding the storyline as I didn't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched it or heard about it. I can, however, tell you that it is a great story with a pretty amazing cast.
Idris Alba, who plays the role of Molly's attorney, was unbelievable! He ABSOLUTELY made me cheer him on. He seriously nailed that role and has me wanting to see his other work!
Kevin Costner, who is always amazing, was a nice added touch to the cast. Although he didn't have a huge role, the paer of Molly's Dad, he was great to watch.
Im not sure what else to say but I definitely recommend MOLLY'S GAME..
In my opinion... this movie is a must see! Thank you so my son for encouraging me to check it out!
Let's Talk Dexter
Dexter Morgan, the serial killer that you actually love. I know, that sounds crazy but having watched the original DEXTER series several times, you can't help but to cheer on this killer.
I've been hesitant to watch any of the spin-off series that were created, even though Michael C. Hall starred in them.
At one time, I attempted to watch DEXTER: NEW BLOOD but found myself struggling to enjoy the series with the same joy I felt when watching the original series.
Then, one night, I had been streaming shows on PARAMOUNT+ and found myself intrigued by the title of DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN.
I decided to click on "Watch Now" and thought to myself "This is gonna suck".
I was wrong.
I was very, very wrong.
The series has one season released as of today, containing 6 episodes. You are given a really good look at how Dexter Morgan began his killing. Following "the code" taught to him by Harry, his father, Dexter, played by PATRICK GIBSON, chooses his first kill after his Dad has a heart attack and seems to get worse each day in the hospital after.
Portrayed by Christian Slater, Dexter's Dad Harry carefully tries to guide Dexter's desire to kill. Having Dexter "report" to him regarding his choices of whom he'd like to kill as well as having him follow up after he's finished.
I found it interesting to see how Dexter grows in his abilities. He uses the same setting for his victims, a "plastic room" with a table that they are strapped to. He also has the same style that we have grown acustom to in the original series, keeping his victims alive so he can explain to them why they were chosen. However, it is apparent that he has not fully developed in his meticulous method of ending their lives. In fact, he is sloppy and makes mistakes.
The show is the prequel that I didn't realize I needed to understand the characters in the series. It dives into the lives of Dexter's sister Deb, who is portrayed by Molly Brown. It also gives you an amazing look at Harry's life and how Dexter became a part of his world.
Personally I am excited to see what is next on the show! DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN is definitely top notch in my book of series to binge!
Wisdom with Age
Through the years, I have binged with the best of them, listened to more types of music and heard songs I never thought I would and have experienced more of ... well heck, let's just say life than i probably should have.
Never will I call myself an expert or say I'm smart when it comes to most things. In fact, I definitely acknowledge that every person differs in our likes and dislikes in life.
However, from time to time, I had wished someone "normal" would have given me their opinion on things I've watched, listened to (or not listened to) , activities i have tried and foods I've eaten... before... WAY BEFORE... I tried them.
Some would argue that I am far from normal but...
Im going to give you my review anyway.
