Chapter 21: Why I Love UWC so much
I feel like I’ve shared so many happenings in my life but I’ve never really mentioned specific reasons why I love studying at a UWC. Admittedly, I have my stack of schoolwork to blame for that (Year One exams are looming in *nervous choking sound*). But to encourage prospective UWC students, especially those from my country, to apply for the next cycle, I think it would be nice if I presented my personal picks of best perks of studying at a UWC. (I asked some of my ‘Friends’ to help with this post.)
✔ I feel more mature and open-minded.
Through TOK and English LangLit, I honestly feel like a changed person. A person who does not cut off the sentences of someone else in the middle of delivering an argument (no matter how strongly she disagrees with them), a person who is not afraid to assess other people’s motives as well as her own, and a person who accepts that it is impossible to learn everything but knows that understanding things that matter makes up for it.
UWC helped me learn how to put myself in other people’s shoes and to look at things holistically instead of being swayed by outward appearances. And of course, it also helped me realize that there are so many things that transcend societal conventions.
✔ I am more honest and more confident about expressing myself.
One thing I will be forever grateful to UWC for is that it directed me to the understanding that expressing my frank sentiments makes me 10000x happier. The way I present myself to others is more genuine, and I am so much better at upholding my convictions. Because really…no matter how hard one tries to impress others, it may not necessarily equate to the amount of respect one will be granted. Besides, isn’t it a little silly when we feel the urge to change ourselves just for other people to like us? ;)
✔ I embrace challenges with more gusto.
One great thought I’ve tried instilling in myself is the importance of valuing self-development. I used to always, always be so scared of making a fool out of myself–and I still get that way sometimes–that I never got the courage to take chances. Now I’ve learned how to laugh my mistakes off, or use them as a driving force, instead of letting them make me feel bad about myself. So far, this has made so much of a difference in my life. I have UWC to thank for that.
✔ It makes me more appreciative of what I have.
It’s not only that I have begun to value my skills and little quirks because of their potential in fomenting remarkable things, nor is it just the “oh, my gosh this is happening” moments that I habitually get here in school. It’s also the distance between me and my family and friends from back home that makes me ache for the flesh-and-bone treasures that I realize I have the pleasure of having,
✔ It helped me realize that successful people are inspirations, not standards or competition.
UWC is a place filled with some of the brightest and most talented students in the whole world. You’d expect me to feel intimidated or frustrated, or heck, even jealous! Admittedly, I’ve felt all those things in the beginning. But as time progresses, I’ve noticed how it’s become so natural for me to champion other people’s triumphs without degrading myself.
And if that self-growth doesn’t sound beautiful to you then I don’t know what will.
Apply to UWC. See for yourself.
