“Wonder” will be a 2017 Movie - YAY! But...

I just found out that the absolutely amazing middle grade / YA novel “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio (which I have gushed over more than once) will become a movie set to release in April of 2017 and I am seriously thrilled. 

Or rather, I was, until I saw set pictures of August.

Now, I am sure Jacob Tremblay (who starred in “Room”) will do a wonderful job portraying this character. There is only one major problem: he does not have Treacher Collins Syndrome or a cleft palate. And those prosthetics and / or make-up are not enough - for me at least. 

This is what he is supposed to look like: “His eyes are about an inch below where they should be on his face, almost to halfway down his cheeks. They slant downward at an extreme angle […], the left noticeably lower than the right. […] The upper lids are always half-closed, […] the lower lids hang deep […] the red inside is visible. He has no brows or eye lashes. His nose is over proportionally big for his face. […] His head is pinched in on the sides where the ears should be, like someone used giant pliers and crushed the middle part of his face. He doesn’t have cheekbones. There are deep creases running down both sides of his nose to his mouth, which gives him a waxy appearance. […] his features look like they’ve been melted …”

Would not this have been a perfect chance to give a child with an actual facial deformity a chance to shine as an actor?

Such a Curious Book

Isn't it curious to have a realistic fiction steal your heart?

     One that opens up your eyes and heals your mind?

Isn't it curious to have a book with a happy ending?

     Especially with all the sorrowful tales that envelope us?

Isn't it curious to cry even though all is well?

     And with the laughs we shared, we'll never forget it.

For this book is exactly what it tells you it is: It is a WONDER, and it is curious.

@rjpalacio If you see this one day, i just have to say as a writer and a reader that i truly loved the entire book, the characters and everything, i cared about what happended to them, i have to say i fell in love with Auggie he is the most cute child i have ever seen. You ma’am made a great job

Me: *Reading 'Wonder' for the first time* Okay, a bit of a rocky meeting, but maybe Julian isn't that bad.

Story: "What about Darth Sidious? Do you like him?" Julian asked.

Me: Look! They even like the same films!

Story: ... But in 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Darth Sidious's face is burned by Sith lightning and becomes totally disfigured.

Me, shoving breadsticks-no- Auggie into my purse: I've got to go. Don't think that I didn't catch that, you little demon. Don't talk to, don't touch, and don't look at me or my son again, got it?
