And Grace only claims the Captain and Scientist parts. Because Rocky is the Engineer! Rocky is the Hail Mary’s Engineer!!!

One of the compelling things about Project Hail Mary is that you can't fix it.

"What if Stratt didn't force Grace to go?" Then the Earth dies.

"What if Yao and Ilyukhina had survived?" Then they all would have died in space, not enough food to get to Earth or Erid

If the Taomoeba hadn't escaped then Grace would have never seen his best friend again. Returning to a world he loves but no longer recognizes.

If the stars weren't dying then Grace never would have met his best friend at all. Living content but alone.

Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story. It is a story of friendship and what it means to be brave. It's a story about saving the world.

But you can't remove the tragedy of the story without making it unrecognizable. It's written into the bones.

Cold take but all languages are beautiful actually. Every single one. Every single human language on earth is a collection of stories interwoven into the very fabric of the words that are spoken.

“Oh but this language sounds scary-“ have you heard a child speak it while pointing at a butterfly?

“Oh but this language sounds silly-“ have you heard someone’s grandma recite a recipe with such practiced ease it comes off as poetry?

“Oh but this language is really weird-“ and yours isn’t? Everyone’s language is weird, dumbass, it came free with your fucking humanity.

Every tongue that is spoken is a work of art. Every language a unique window into the world.

Isn’t it wonderful?

Every language I have ever encountered has a word that sounds like a bell.

English decided to go full onomatopoeia with ding-dong and tang, of course, and German isn't far behind with glockenspiel, but Mandarin Chinese has 谢谢 (xièxie/thank you) and Arabic has حبيبي (habibi/sweetie, honey, term of endearment) and Spanish has mundo (world) and Hebrew has דוֹד (dodi/uncle).

Isn't it interesting how many of these are words of love and togetherness? A glockenspiel is a musical instrument, a thing of joy. And yes, sure, English has its onomatopoeia--but it also has darling.

Love sounds like bells in every language.

Isn't that just something?
